An evaluation of copper-containing soluble glass pellets, copper oxide particles and injectable copper as supplements for cattle and sheep

The efficacy of 3 copper (Cu) supplements in maintaining adequate Cu status in Shorthorn heifers and Merino wethers was investigated in 3 experiments on alkaline peat soils in the South East of South Australia. The Cu supplements used were: soluble glass pellets containing Cu; copper oxide particles (CuO); Cu as a subcutaneous injection. Pasture contained moderate to high concentrations of molybdenum (Mo) (2.9-12.3 mg/kg), moderate Cu (3.8-8.7 mg/kg) and adequate sulfur (>1.7 g/kg) to limit the absorption of dietary Cu in ruminants. Shorthom heifers with normal Cu status were given 1 of 6 treatments (no Cu; 2 glass pellets; CuO at 3 doses; Cu injection) and introduced to the pasture (experiment 1). There was no liveweight response to any supplement. Relative to untreated heifers, mean liver Cu concentrations were raised only in heifers receiving the glass pellets or the highest dosage of CuO (20 g). The glass pellets maintained an adequate mean liver Cu concentration for at least 44 weeks but the CuO was effective for less than 24 weeks. Hypocupraemic heifers given 1 of 3 treatments (2 glass pellets; CuO; Cu injection) were significantly heavier (P<0.05) than the untreated heifers after 30 weeks (experiment 2). Mean plasma Cu concentrations were adequate at 30 weeks in the glass pellet and CuO groups, but mean liver concentrations indicated severe deficiency in all groups at 30 weeks. There was considerable individual variability in response to the glass pellet and CuO particle treatments, possibly due to the partial regurgitation of some of these orally dosed supplements. Merino wethers with adequate plasma and liver Cu concentrations received 1 of 5 treatments (no Cu; 1 glass pellet; 2 glass pellets; CuO; Cu injection) and were then grazed on a peat soil for a period of 1 year. Plasma Cu concentrations in the control group only indicated hypocupraemia at week 42. Liver Cu concentrations were higher (P<0.001) in all supplemented groups from week 18 to after week 30. Under the conditions of the experiments, 20 g CuO (the suggested dose) for the glass pellets or a single Cu injection were not sufficient to maintain the Cu status of heifers for 1 year. Repeat treatments or higher dose rates were required. The recommended dose rates of the supplements were adequate for wethers.

In a series of experiments aimed at evaluating copper oxide as a supplement, grazing sheep were dosed with varying quantities of copper oxide particles up to 64 g, and the toxicity, the rate of particle excretion, and copper storage in the liver and other tissues were recorded. The toxicities (LD50) of copper oxide particles were 1.17 and 1.80 g/kg liveweight for two groups of grazing adult fine-wool Merino sheep. Death usually occurred 88-96 days after the oral administration of the particles; mean hepatic copper concentrations of sheep dying from copper toxicity were 4122-4308 mg/kg DM. The rate of faecal copper excretion of copper-supplemented sheep, expressed as a percentage of the dose, was less when 50 g of particles were given than when the dose was 5 or 10 g, but excretion patterns were variable. The quantity of hepatic copper stored per g of copper oxide given declined as the dose increased from 0 to 32 g, but increased again at higher doses. Hepatic copper concentration reached a maximum 2-3 months after dosing and the rate of decline was positively related to dose rate; thus, large doses of copper are unlikely to extend the period of elevated copper status. Large doses also increased whole blood copper concentrations and elevated plasma aspartate transaminase activities; this was taken to indicate copper poisoning. Tissue copper concentrations from sheep given up to 64 g particles are reported; liver was the most sensitive to copper treatment. Copper contents of the lung and kidney also responded to copper therapy, but carcass components such as leg, shoulder and muscle did not. Weaned lambs given 2 g of particles (c. 0.13 g/kg liveweight) grew significantly faster than unsupplemented lambs. This dose rate was approximately one-seventh of that predicted to cause 5% mortality, and it is concluded that, at appropriate dose rates, this method of supplementation did not increase mortality or cause excessive increases in tissue copper concentrations, and could increase growth rate.

The plant of castor is widely spread in the Iraqi land, and characterized with containing ricin toxin, which has a very serious effects, and because the seeds of this plant scattered in the agricultural soil and rivers water, which increases the exposure of humans and animals to these beans. Objective: This experiment was designed to study the effect of high concentration of castor bean powder in some physiological and biochemical parameters and changes in some tissues of the body, as well as trying to use doxycycline to reduce the effects of ingestion of these seeds. Materials and Methods: In the experiment, 24 local rabbits were raised and fed in the Animal House of the Faculty of Medicine / Al-Muthanna University, then divided into four groups and treated for three weeks (21 days), Control group: treated with normal saline solution (0.9) orally throughout the experiment, G1: was treated orally with a concentration of 25 mg / kg of castor bean powder daily during the experiment, G2 : orally treated 25 mg / kg of castor bean and 25 mg / kg of doxycycline, G3: orally treated 25 mg / kg of castor powder with 50 mg / kg of doxycycline daily throughout the trial period. Results: The results of the experiment showed significant changes (P less than 0.05) in all physiological and biochemical blood tests when compared with control group. There was a significant decrease in PCV, Hb, RBC, T.protein and body weights, while demonstrated a significant increase in WBC, Urea, Creatinine, ALT, AST and ALP, with distortions in liver and kidney of animals that treated with Castor beans. In contrast, the treatment with doxycycline and caster beans showed significant improvement reflected by a normal proportion in physiological tests and biochemical tests with improvement in the tissues when compared to control group. Conclusions: It can be concluded from this study that castor bean has high toxic and pathogenic effects that may be dangerous to the life of the organism. Therefore, it is advisable to be cautious of these pills and avoid exposure to them, also recommended to take high concentrations of doxycycline treatment when infected with castor bean poisoning.

We investigated the internal contamination by radioactive cesium associated with the FDNPP accident, in the testes or uterus and ovaries of free-roaming cats (Felis silvestris catus), which were protected by volunteers in the Namie Town, Fukushima. A total of 253 samples (145 testes and 108 uterus and ovaries) obtained from adult cats and 15 fetuses from 3 pregnant female cats were measured. Free-roaming cats in Namie Town had a higher level of radioactive contamination in comparison to the control group in Tokyo, as the 134Cs + 137Cs activity concentration ranged from not detectable to 37,882 Bq kg−1 in adult cats. Furthermore, the radioactivity in the fetuses was almost comparable to those in their mother’s uterus and ovaries. The radioactivity was also different between several cats protected in the same location, and there was no significant correlation with ambient dose-rates and activity concentrations in soil. Moreover, radioactive cesium levels in cats decreased with each year. Therefore, it is likely that decontamination work in Namie Town and its surroundings could affect radioactive cesium accumulation, and thus possibly reduce the internal radiation exposure of wildlife living in contaminated areas. It is hence necessary to continue radioactivity monitoring efforts for the residents living in Namie Town.

IntroductionTo examine how the risk of cardiovascular disease changes according to degree of change in body mass index (BMI) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol in patients with diabetes using the health medical examination cohort database of the National Health Insurance Service in Korea. In comparison, the pattern in a non-diabetic control group was also examined.Research design and methodsThe study samples were 13 800 patients with type 2 diabetes and 185 898 non-diabetic controls, and their baseline characteristics and repeatedly measured BMI and LDL-cholesterol until occurrence of cardiovascular disease were collected in longitudinal data. We used the variability model that is joint of mixed effects and regression model, then estimated parameters about variability by Bayesian methods.ResultsThe risk of cardiovascular disease was increased significantly with high average real variability (ARV) of BMI in the patients with diabetes, but the risk of cardiovascular disease was not increased according to degree of ARV in non-diabetic controls. The Bayesian variability model was used to analyze the effects of BMI and LDL-cholesterol change pattern on development of cardiovascular disease in diabetics, showing that variability did not have a statistically significant effect on cardiovascular disease. This shows the danger of the former simple method when interpreting only the mean of the absolute value of the variation.ConclusionsThe approach of simple SD in previous studies for estimation of individual variability does not consider the order of observation. However, the Bayesian method used in this study allows for flexible modeling by superimposing volatility assessments on multistage models.

Abstract Sheep are often subjected to painful procedures and thus they need to be treated with analgesics. Nevertheless, knowledges about pharmacokinetic features of these drugs in this species are poor. The aim of this study was to evaluate plasma behaviour of cimicoxib in sheep after a single oral administration at two different dose rates (4 and 6 mg/kg). Maximum plasma concentrations of cimicoxib were equal to 273.78 (median value; range 189.00-567.32) and 565.01 (range 308.27-822.59) ng/mL after treatment with 4 and 6 mg/kg, respectively. The time of maximum concentration (Tmax) was achieved between 4 and 10 hours following treatment at the lower dose, and between 6 and 10 hours after the administration of the higher dose, with one sheep achieving the concentration peak at 0.75 hours. The slow absorption and the great individual variability in plasma concentration, probably due to ruminal effects, suggest that cimicoxib is not suitable for oral treatment in sheep.

Background. When heavy metals accumulate in air, soil, and water, the risk of human exposure increases among industrial workers, as well as in people living near polluted areas. Heavy metals adversely affect a variety of bodily systems such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, immune, and reproductive systems. In addition, long-term exposure and accumulation of heavy metals in the body may disturb oxidative stress genes and thus increase the susceptibility to various diseases. Objectives. The aim of this study is to estimate the metallothionein concentration in both mussel samples from Abu Qir Bay, Egypt and the blood of local fishermen as a biomarker of exposure to metal pollution. Methods. Levels of metallothionein and heavy metals were measured in mussels. Blood levels of metallothionein and heavy metals of local fishermen were measured and compared with a control group. The effect of heavy metal exposure on oxidative stress status was investigated through the determination of malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase and glutathione content. Results. The results of this study showed high concentrations of metallothionein in mussels and in fishermen's blood, accompanied by high concentrations of metals such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn). At the same time, a significant decrease in glutathione content and catalase enzyme activity was associated with a significant increase in the malondialdehyde concentrations in sera of fishermen. Conclusions. The present study found that the El Maadiya region is polluted with heavy metals, inducing oxidative stress in fishermen in the vicinity. These results reveal the necessity of further environmental monitoring in the study area in order to evaluate other types of pollutants and their effects on human health.

Abstract Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that has adverse effects on non-target organisms. This present study investigated the toxic effects of glyphosate on earthworms and the potential of antioxidant-rich plants, Ocimum gratissimum and Telfairia occidentalis remediate these effects. Earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were placed into four groups and treated with concentrations of 1, 2 and 3% glyphosate in soil. The last group was a control group. The worms were collected on the 3rd, 7th and 14th, days post-exposure. During these intervals, the weight of the worms and activities of antioxidant enzyme - superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured to determine the level of antioxidant responses. Furthermore, the percentage of DNA fragmentation was measured to assess the level of DNA damage. Compared with the control group, earthworms exposed to glyphosate and fed with Ocimum gratissimum and Telfairia occidentalis showed varying responses, with increased activities of CAT, SOD, GSH and reduced levels of MDA. Also, decreased fragmented DNA was observed in earthworm groups fed with Ocimum gratissimum and Telfairia occidentalis in comparison with the group treated exclusively with the herbicide. These results suggest that toxicity from glyphosate exposure significantly reduced oxidative damage, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage in Eisenia fetida by the antioxidant-rich plants. It is conceivable that soil organisms could suffer a significant mortality when exposed to high concentrations of glyphosate. The cultivation of these plants should be encouraged while caution should be exercised in the use of the herbicides.

The present study intends to evaluate the tribological characteristics of Copper (Cu) and Copper oxide (CuO) based nanolubricant for its use in machine tool slideways. Different sizes of copper and copper oxide particles were chosen and physical characterisation were carried out using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The nanolubricants were prepared by adding various proportions (0.1%, 0.25%, 0.4% wt) of the particles in Polyalphaolefin (PAO) base oil with lecithin and oleic acid surfactants. Friction and stick-slip characteristics of the nanolubricants were assessed using pin-on-block reciprocating friction monitor simulating the actual loading conditions prevailing in machine tool slideways. Studies were also conducted under elevated temperatures to ascertain the performance of particles at higher temperatures. Extreme pressure properties of the lubricants were studied using Four Ball Tester. The results of the experiments were compared with ISO VG 32 oil, a conventional mineral lubricant meant for machine tool slideways and it was found that the tribological properties nanolubricants using both the nanoparticles were considerably better. The coefficient of friction found to be decreased by 2.5% and 17.5% for copper particles with 0.1% weight composition in ambient temperature and elevated temperature respectively. Whereas for copper oxide particles with 0.1% weight composition a reduction of 14.25% and 10% were obtained.
