Pedigree Dorset Horn sheep in Australia. 2. Breed structure and genetic analysis

Flock Books were used to determine the breed structure of pedigree Dorset Horn sheep in Australia. Four-generation ram sample pedigrees were used to determine important flocks in 1954, 1969 and 1974. Two-line ram sample pedigrees traced to foundation or imported animals were used to determine important animals and the level of inbreeding and its components in the same years. A hierarchical breed structure was found to exist. Only 15 to 18 per cent of flocks were Breeders' Flocks, i.e. supplied rams to other pedigree flocks, and only one-third of these supplied rams to other Breeders' Flocks. The effective number of flocks supplying sires in the third and fourth generations was two to three in 1954 and four to five in 1974 and 1969. One flock, Newbold, had a genetic contribution of over 40 per cent in 1954. Two flocks had a genetic contribution of over 20 per cent each, with five flocks having a combined genetic contribution of over 62 per cent in 1974. Total inbreeding was 12.5 per cent and increased by 1.5 per cent per generation in the five years to 1974. Current inbreeding was 1.85 per cent in 1974 with 5.0 per cent of matings being parent-offspring and 3.7 per cent paternal half-sib. Expected long-term inbreeding (7.9 per cent) was the major component, which was caused by few animals being used extensively in the development of the breed. One sire had a direct relationship of 30 per cent to rams registered in 1974. Implications of the high level of inbreeding are discussed as well as development of breed improvement schom3s within the existing breed structure.

(i) The structure and genetic history of the pedigree Hereford breed in Australia are analysed by pedigree sampling methods. (ii) The pattern of the breed structure is generally similar to that found in other breeds, but it is extremely dynamic owing to the present rapid expansion of the breed. Changes are taking place in the herd composition of the major breeders' groups and there are many new herds yet to find their level in the structure. (iii) Considerable emphasis has been placed on the use of imported animals in the development of the breed. Of all herds registering in Volume 24 of the herd book, 31.6% used imported sires, and the percentage of genes in the breed in 1949 derived from animals imported since 1880 was 97.7, and from animals imported since 1930, 53.9%. (iv) The most important herd in 1949 made a genetic contribution to the breed of 33.1%, while the contributions of the four next most important herds were 17.4, 10.1, 7.4, and 6.1%. In the four-generation pedigrees from which these figures were derived, the contribution of imported animals was 56.1%. (v) The animal with the highest relationship to the breed was Free Town Director (Imp.), with direct relationships of 5.6 and 9.2% to the 1941 and 1949 samples respectively. Of the 16 sires and one dam whose direct relationships are 3.0% or more in any of the three sample years, 12 sires were imported. (vi) The total inbreeding in 1949 (base year 1880) was 2.6%. This comprised 0.2% current inbreeding, 1.6% long-term inbreeding, and 0.8% strain inbreeding. There was no evidence of subdivision of the breed into separate strains. (vii) The effective generation length has decreased since 1930 to about 5.5 years in the 1949–50 sample. Nearly 50% of the animals in this sample were sired by bulls 4 years old or younger, while about 33% were from dams 4 years old or younger. (viii) Bulls from major breeders' herds are used widely throughout the breed, while about 90% of sires and 45% of dams were bred in herds other than the one in which they were used. Therefore, it is unlikely that there is much genetic variation between herds.

(i) The breed structure and genetic history of the pedigree Jersey breed in Australia are analysed by pedigree sampling methods. (ii) The breed structure may be divided into four levels, with imported animals at the top determining the genetic make-up of the breed. Animals imported since 1900 have made a genetic contribution to the breed in 1950 of 61.8 per cent. At least two substructures exist within the breed, based respectively on the major herds in Queensland and those in the rest of Australia. (iii) The genetic contribution to the breed of the most important of the herds is only 7.0 per cent. (iv) Determination of the percentage direct relationship of important animals in five sample years shows that no one animal has made a major contribution to the genotype of the breed. (v) The degree of inbreeding (base year 1900) is calculated. The total inbreeding in 1950 (4.19 per cent.) comprises 1.31 per cent. current inbreeding, 0.51 per cent. long-term inbreeding, and 2.37 per cent. strain inbreeding. The index of subdivision calculated from the non-current and long-term inbreeding is 5.65, indicating that the breed is subdivided into strains. (vi) The effective generation length for each of the pedigree breeds – Jersey, Australian Illawarra Shorthorn, Friesian, Ayrshire, and Guernsey – in Australia is 5 years. Most bulls are used when they are 1-3 years old, and are then lost to the pedigree industry. It is shown that the bull requirements of the above breeds could be met by the progeny of performance-recorded animals. Whether this would increase the rate of genetic improvement is discussed briefly. (vii) Genetic improvement in the Jersey breed could best be achieved by: ( a ) stopping further importation; ( b ) closing the breed in each environment and concentrating selection within these regions to develop strains adapted to each particular environment; ( c ) selecting on production records rather than using genetically unknown sires and dams, particularly in the major breeders' herds.

To investigate the relationship of different subtypes of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) to early disease evolution and long-term prognosis in patients with acute cerebral infarction after intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator(r-tPA). Seventy ischemic stroke patients treated with intravenous r-tPA who underwent computed tomography (CT) within 24 hours after thrombolysis were divided into 4 types (hemorrhagic infarction type 1 [HI-1], HI-2, parenchymal hemorrhage type 1 [PH-1], or PH-2 which according to the size of the hematoma and the presence or absence of space-occupying effect). Early evolution of the disease was observed by the change in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score within 24 hours after thrombolysis. The long-term prognosis was assessed by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at the third month. There were 17 (24.3%) patients with ICH. Compared with patients in the non-ICH group, HI did not affect early neurological function or clinical outcome at the third month. PH-1 did not increase the risk of early neurological deterioration; however, PH-1 has a tendency to increase the risk of death at the third month (50% vs 11.3%, P = 0.090). PH-2 was significantly related to early neurological deterioration (66.7% vs 3.8%, P < 0.001) and mortality at the third month (50.0% vs 11.3%, P = 0.040). Patients with different subtypes of ICH after thrombolysis have different clinical outcomes. PH-2 is significantly associated with early neurological deterioration and increases mortality at the third month.

Zmiany wprowadzane w obszarze długoterminowego oszczędzania w Polsce mają na celu stworzenie dodatkowych zasobów finansowych niezbędnych do pokrycia przyszłych potrzeb i zobowiązań. Funkcjonujące dotychczas produkty emerytalne wchodzące w skład III filaru systemu emerytalnego nie zyskały powszechności i nie zapewniają wystarczających środków na przyszłe świadczenia emerytalne. W celu przeciwdziałania dotychczasowym barierom rozwoju produktów długoterminowego oszczędzania zastosowano wiele rozwiązań wspierających wysoki poziom uczestnictwa w dobrowolnym, dodatkowym oszczędzaniu. Fundamentem aksjologicznym podjętych działań stało się pojęcie wolności, a teorią wyjaśniającą zachowania jednostek ekonomia behawioralna. W niniejszym opracowaniu przedstawiono mechanizmy zaczerpnięte z dorobku ekonomii behawioralnej, które zapisane zostały w ustawie z dnia 4 października 2018 roku o pracowniczych planach kapitałowych oraz aktach niższego rzędu konstytuujących system PPK w Polsce. W pierwszej części pracy przedstawione zostały przyczyny wprowadzenia nowego rozwiązania długoterminowego oszczędzania. W drugiej części pracy wskazano praktyczne zastosowania ekonomii behawioralnej wykorzystane w konstrukcji PPK. Pracę wieńczy krytyczne podsumowanie, wskazujące wyzwania i problemy, które mogą stanowić bariery w upowszechnieniu się tej formy oszczędzania. Employee Capital Plans as an example of behavioral economy implementationThe changes introduced in the area of long-term savings in Poland are aimed at creating additional financial resources necessary to cover future needs and obligations. Previously functioning pension products included in the third pillar of the pension system have not become popular and do not provide sufficient funds for future retirement benefits. In order to counteract the existing barriers to the development of long-term saving products, a number of solutions supporting a high level of participation in voluntary, additional savings were applied. The axiological foundation of the actions undertaken became the notion of freedom and the theory explaining the behavior of individuals in behavioral economics. This study presents the mechanisms taken from the heritage of behavioral economics, which were recorded in the Act of 4 October 2018 on employee capital plans and lower-level acts constituting the PPK system in Poland. The first part of the work presents the reasons for introducing a new long-term saving solution. In the second part, the work contains a description of the duties of employing entities and the rights of participants of the Employee Capital Plans. In the third part of the work, practical applications of behavioral economics used in the construction of PPK were indicated. The work is crowned with a critical summary showing the challenges and problems that may constitute barriers to the spread of this form of saving.

SummaryPhosphorus, followed by potassium, were the plant nutrients that most limited yields during the third decade of a long-term fertilizer experiment on groundnut, maize and cassava conducted on an Ultisol in Ghana. Application of sulphate of ammonia significantly decreased soil pH, thus reducing crop yields. Superphosphate or mulch applied alone consistently increased the yields of all three crops. Application of potash increased the yield of cassava throughout the cropping period, but the potash × mulch interaction depressed yields in two of the three cropping seasons. Use of crop rotation, grass mulch and fertilizer, including small amounts of lime, enabled crop yields and soil fertility to be maintained at a fairly high level under continuous cropping.

AbstractThe article is concerned with the specific relationship of corruption and inequality in modern societies. This linkage is expanded with the category of trust, which is certainly an important concept in modern societies. There are different points of view on the relationship between corruption and social inequality. The paper proposes to make comparative analysis of this relationship and to interpret it based on the current social situation. First, it should be noted that there is a direct link between the levels of corruption and inequality. The high level of corruption is usually associated with high levels of inequality. But the hypothesis of a strong direct relationship between these concepts is controversial. The path from inequality to corruption may be indirect through trust, but this relationship is a key to understanding why some societies are more corrupt than others. But it is not so simple: the correlation between inequality and corruption is weak. Inequality and corruption are not directly related, there are deviations from this relationship.

This study examined whether individual differences in the vividness of visual imagery influenced performance on a novel long-term change detection task. Participants were presented with a sequence of pictures, with each picture and its title displayed for 17  s, and then presented with changed or unchanged versions of those pictures and asked to detect whether the picture had been changed. Cuing the retrieval of the picture's image, by presenting the picture's title before the arrival of the changed picture, facilitated change detection accuracy. This suggests that the retrieval of the picture's representation immunizes it against overwriting by the arrival of the changed picture. The high and low vividness participants did not differ in overall levels of change detection accuracy. However, in replication of Gur and Hilgard (1975) , high vividness participants were significantly more accurate at detecting salient changes to pictures compared to low vividness participants. The results suggest that vivid images are not characterised by a high level of detail and that vivid imagery enhances memory for the salient aspects of a scene but not all of the details of a scene. Possible causes of this difference, and how they may lead to an understanding of individual differences in change detection, are considered.

In addition to its established oncological indications the sensitivity of bone scintigraphy is of steadily increasing significance in traumatology. Inactivity- induced osteoporosis plays a major role during the immobilization period in the plaster cast. In the region of the joints remodelling intensity may reach such a high level that the non-injured bone shows a higher rate of accumulation than the fracture. This process already begins between the third and fourth week of immobilization. The highest uptake is found after fracture of the scaphoid bone at the end of twelve weeks of immobilization. Control scintigraphies at intervals of several days are indicated to differentiate between various clinical conditions (pseudoarthrosis, activated osteoarthrosis, algodystrophy in case of doubtful x-ray results).

В статье представлены материалы о взаимосвязи продолжительности продуктивного использования коров с характеристикой устойчивости к деградации, с возрастом отела и удоем. В исследованной, разнородной по происхождению, группе животных для прогноза продуктивного периода коров, обусловленного устойчивостью к деградации и возрастом первого отела, пригодно уравнение регрессии, аргументами в котором являются индекс устойчивости, возраст первого отела в первой и второй степенях. Коэффициент корреляции межу предсказанными значениями продуктивного периода и его фактическими величинами в I группе составляет 0,502, во II - 0,604. При этом крайние варианты прогнозируются со статистическими ошибками 5 мес при оценке индекса устойчивости по 2 лактациям и 4,1 мес по 3, а средние варианты, соответственно, 1,6 и 1,51 мес. Индекс устойчивости к процессу старения является важной характеристикой биологических особенностей коров, определяющий их продуктивное долголетие. Его оценка по первым 2 и 3 лактациям имеет прямолинейную связь с продуктивным периодом (r=0,4109 и r=0,5270), соответственно. Зависимость продуктивного периода от возраста первого отела криволинейная — с увеличением возраста первого отела сокращается срок продуктивного использования, при возрасте первого отела более 1400 дней срок продуктивного использования колеблется от 1,33 до 1,41 лактации. Коэффициент корреляции между этими характеристиками коров составляет - 0,2164 в I и - 0,2620 во II группах. The article presents materials about the relationship of the duration of productive use of cows with the characteristic of resistance to degradation, with the age of calving and milk yield. In the studied group of animals, which is heterogeneous in origin, the regression equation is suitable for predicting the productive period of cows due to resistance to degradation and the age of the first calving, the arguments of which are the stability index, the age of the first calving in the first and second degrees. The correlation coefficient between the predicted values of the productive period and its actual values in group I is 0.502, in group II - 0.604. At the same time, the extreme variants are predicted with statistical errors of 5 months when evaluating the stability index for 2 lactations and 4.1 months for 3, and the average variants, respectively, are 1.6 and 1.51 months. The index of resistance to the aging process is an important characteristic of the biological characteristics of cows, which determines their productive longevity. Its estimate for the first 2 and 3 lactations has a direct relationship with the productive period (r=0.4109 and r=0.5270), respectively. The dependence of the productive period age at first calving curvilinear with increasing age at first calving reduces the time to productive use, while age at first calving of more than 1400 days, the period of productive use ranges from 1.33 to 1.41 lactation. The correlation coefficient between these characteristics of cows is-0.2164 in I and-0.2620 in II groups.

In the third year, Laura took a leave through November to help settle her newly adopted child. Her students missed her and, when she returned, some seemed to have reverted to their original untrusting selves. Soon, their trust in Laura and in themselves was restored. Would that trust remain? Seven years later, I interviewed 9 of the 14 students still in the school district. All remembered Laura and the class fondly. Eight had detailed memories of their interactions with Laura, and the life skills and attitudes they learned in her class. Of the six students who were judged insecurely attached when they entered Laura’s class, four appeared successful and confident and two were currently failing most of their courses. Possible causes for the long-term success of some students and failure of others are discussed.
