The yield and survival of lucerne lines in the upper south-east of South Austrialia

Thirty lines of lucerne from regions with Mediterranean and temperate climates were grown on a degp and infertile sandy soil in the Upper South East of South Australia. One trial (A) was cut at the frequency usually recommended for lucerne, and the other (B) was cut twice as often. Both trials were sown in spring 1965 in drills 35 cm apart, and were maintained as pure lucerne stands. The yield of dry matter of the tops was measured in Trial A between November 1966 and November 1969, and in trial B for one year from November 1966. The row cover attained by the plants was measured in each year. In trial A, yields rose to maximum values in spring and declined during the summer months to minimal values in autumn. At most harvests there mere significant differences between lines. Mediterranean lines gave good yields in the early phase of the trial, and were the most productive lines through each late summer to winter period. Lines from cool temperate regions, e.g. Rhizoma, gave low initial yields and low winter yields, but gave largest yields in spring 1968. Two Portuguese lines consistently gave high yields : they were the only lines to produce significantly more total dry matter than Hunter River over three years. All lines adequately survived a very dry year (1967), and most plant losses occurred in the final year of the trial. In 1969, six Mediterranean lines showed poor survival, each had less than 50 per cent row cover. Dry matter yields were smaller in trial B. Lines from cool temperate regions maintained 80 per cent row cover throughout and gave the largest yields. Three Mediterranean lines were eliminated after two years of frequent cutting, and the row cover of five other lines was reduced to less than 50 per cent.

Investigation into the possible sources of primary infection by the fungus Ventruia inaequalis (Cooke) Wint. in spring has been carried out. The results present new information on the life cycle of the pathogen under South Australian conditions. Sources of primary infection, such 'as lesions on one-year-old wood or overwintering superficial conidia on the trees, do not appear important. Bud-scale infection of dormant buds has been shown, and its relative importance is discussed. Ascospores are the most important source of primary infection. Their period of discharge extends to a later date than previously reported for South Australia and is considered in relation to leader shoot and late summer spot infection.

A survey of the literature on the distribution of the sclerophyllous understorey in Australia leads to the conclusion that, although the climatic conditions under which it grows may vary considerably, the soils on which it flourishes are always acid and very low in available phosphorus and nitrogen and sometimes in potassium, copper, zinc, and molybdenum. The problem is how the sclerophyllous species are able to flourish on such deficient soils. To provide a background for the investigation of this problem, a detailed ecological study was initiated on an extensive stand of heath occurring on deep sand (the Makin sand) in the upper south-east of South Australia. This paper outlines the habitat and indicates the general characteristics of the heath vegetation of the area. The climate is typical of a meditsrranean region; the soil is a deep, acid sand, remarkably low in most mineral nutrients; the vegetation is scarcely influenced by grazing animals, but is regularly razed by fire. The vegetation is dominated by a number of nanophanerophytes, not more than 6 ft in height, with an understorey of chamaephytes, hemicryptophytes, and geophytes. The majority of the species possess dull green, small, sclerophyllous leaves (leptophylls). Growth occurs predominantly during the summer, from January to March, while many of the species flower during spring. Most of the dominant species, however, flower during late summer to midwinter. Leaf-fall is greatest towards the end of the dry summer period, while litter decomposition, which is only completed after 1 1/2– 2 1/2 years, reaches its maximum in the spring. It is shown that it is necessary to examine at least four random quadrats of at least 25 sq. yd to study satisfactorily the larger species. In each quadrat, a smaller random sub-quadrat of at least 22 sq. ft will enable the critical examination of the smaller species. The outstanding features of the southern Australian heath are (1) a summergrowth rhythm instead of the spring growth typical of similar vegetation in other mediterranean-type regions, and (2) its consistent occurrence on soils very low in fertility. It is suggested that these are connected with the evolutionary history of the heath which apparently flourished during the Pliocene period on widespread, infertile, lateritic podsols in equilibrium with a warm pluvial climate favouring summer growth.

Seasonal patterns of body weight, fat, protein, milk quality (dry matter content), and milk production rate were determined for three sexually mature female muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) over three consecutive lactation periods. Females were allowed to graze in summer and had access to hay year-round. A high-protein pelleted ration supplemented this diet. Following calving in early May (1984, 1986) or June (1985), body weight remained constant throughout the summer, body fat declined for 3–5 weeks after calving, and body protein declined transiently during the latter period. Almost all annual gains in body weight and body fat occurred during the 6- to 8-week rutting period from mid-August to mid-October. High milk production (1.3–2.4 L/d) occurred 3 weeks post-calving, generally remained high for another month, and declined to 1.2 ± 0.15 L/d (mean ± SEM) just before the rut. A major decline in milk production, to 0.44 ± 0.050 L/d, occurred during the rut. Although milk dry matter increased 33% ± 4.3% during the rut, this increase was offset by the 60% ± 6.4% decline in milk production. All females successfully reproduced each year of the study and no evidence was found for a lactational anestrum. The hypothesis that gains in body weight must be made before the rutting period to maximize conception rate was rejected. This study highlighted the importance to lactating muskoxen of the late summer – early winter period for annual regain in body weight and body fat, which occurred concurrently with ovulation and conception.

The current requirement of copper for optimum growth of pasture, and production and health of sheep on the sandy soils of the upper south-east regions of South Australia was investigated in three consecutive years at three sites each of which had previously been treated once with copper. In a glasshouse study copper applied to virgin soil, obtained from areas next to the sites, increased the growth of subterranean clover. Dry matter production of herbage grown in enclosures on developed soil that had received copper 14-23 years earlier did not respond to additional applications of copper fertilizer. The concentration of copper in grazed herbage, where no additional copper was applied, was usually greater than 6 mg/kg dry matter. Sheep liveweight and greasy wool production were not increased by subcutaneous injections of copper at any site and the concentrations of copper in blood plasma and liver of untreated sheep were consistently greater than those associated with copper inadequacy in sheep. Also the copper treatments did not affect the fibre diameter or copper concentrations of the fleeces, and steely wool was not observed. We concluded that a copper dressing of 2 kg/ha to these soils provides adequate copper for pasture and sheep production for at least 23 years and that repeated dressings are unwarranted.

Since 1975, different patterns of the growth of Fragilaria and Cyanobacteria in the mid or late summer have been observed in the Saidenbach Reservoir. In most of the years, there was a mutual exclusion of mass growths of these two groups. High yields of Fragilaria caused low yields of blue-greens and vice versa. In the first years, Fragilaria was always the first to achieve a mass growth, followed by the Cyanobacteria. Then, in the last years, the blue-greens were succeeded by Fragilaria. Only in some years, there was a large and simultaneous growth of both groups. It has been shown, that the supply of silicon and phosphorus immediately before controlled the pattern of succession in the midsummer period. Mostly, the Si:P ratio was the regulating factor, but there were also years in which the absolute concentration level of these two nutrients were either non-limiting high or below the minimum resource concentration necessary to compensate for the losses. In these cases, the Si:P ratio lost its controlling function. Other influencing factors are discussed, in particular the effect of turbulent mixing. The special nutrient conditions in the midsummer were not only determined by the external load but also by the Si depletion during the spring mass development of diatoms other than Fragilaria, which mostly is physically controlled. Therefore, the succession pattern in the midsummer is sensitive to the meteorological conditions to a large extent.

Abstract Spring-born heifers (n = 1,012) weaned at 148 ± 17 d were used in a 3-yr study to evaluate performance in winter development systems which utilized cover crop and corn residue grazing. Heifers were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: grazing corn residue with dried distillers grains (CD) or wheat midds (CW) supplementation, or grazing late summer planted oat-brassica cover crop followed by corn residue supplemented dried distillers grains (CC). Grazing of corn residue (CD and CW) and cover crop (CC) began in early November. Supplementation during the corn residue phase was adjusted to target ~55% of mature BW (338 kg) at breeding. After 63 d, CC were moved to corn residue; on d 77 CD and CW began receiving grower ration. In mid-February (d 98), heifers were comingled and managed in a single group. Breeding season began in June and lasted for 29 d. Prior to corn residue grazing, ADG of CC was greater (0.76 kg/d; P< 0.01) than CD or CW (0.58 kg/d and 0.49 kg/d, respectively). Gain during the last 35 d of the winter period for CC was 0.13 kg/d less than CW (P< 0.01) but not different from CD. Overall winter ADG was greater (P< 0.05) for CC (0.62 kg/d) than CD (0.53 kg/d) or CW (0.50 kg/d). Percent of mature BW prior to breeding was 52% for CC and 50% for CD and CW. May reproductive tract scores did not differ (P=0.26) between CC and CW but were greater (P< 0.05) in CC than CD. Pregnancy rates were affected by treatment (P< 0.01), with CC (76%) being greater than CD (68%) and CW (64%). Utilizing oat-brassica cover crops early in the winter followed by a lower rate of gain while grazing corn residue appear to be effective for developing beef heifers. Abstract Background The role of lung ultrasound (LUS) in diagnosis and response to diuretic treatment of patients with acute HF has been widely studied, but less is known about its value in chronic HF. Purpose To assess the prognostic value of LUS in a cohort of chronic HF stable ambulatory patients and to explore the relationship of LUS findings with clinical data, such as NYHA functional class, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and NTproBNP. Methods Consecutive stable ambulatory patients who attended a scheduled follow-up visit in a HF clinic were included. LUS were performed with a pocket device and examined 4 chest areas per side (two anterior and two lateral). Scans were analysed offline by two investigators blinded to clinical data, who evaluated the number of B-lines of each area. The addition number of B-lines of each area and the quartiles of such addition were used for the analyses. The primary outcome end-point was the composite of all-cause death or hospitalization due to HF at one year. Linear regression and Cox regression analyses were performed. Results Five-hundred seventy-seven patients were included between July 2016 and July 2017 (age 69±12 years, 72% men). The main HF aetiology was ischemic heart disease (43%) followed by dilated cardiomyopathy (20%). Median HF duration was 79 months (Q1-Q3 38–144). Mean LVEF was 45%±13 (mean LVEF when admitted at the Unit 34%±13). Most patients were in NYHA functional class II (70%), 13% were in class I and 17% in class III. Median NTproBNP was 722 ng/L (Q1-Q3 262–1760). Mean number of B-lines was 5±6 (Q1, 0; Q2, 1–3; Q3, 4–7; Q4, ≥8). The number of B-lines was associated with age (beta-coefficient 0.11, p<0.001), NYHA functional class (beta-coefficient 1.75, p<0.001), and logNTproBNP (beta-coefficient 1.40, p<0.001). Mean number of B-lines according to NYHA functional class was: class I, 3.5±6; class II, 4.9±6; and class III, 7.1±7. During the one year follow-up 47 patients suffered the primary end-point. In total there were 24 HF related hospitalizations and 26 deaths. In Cox regression analysis, Q4 of B-lines showed a double risk of suffering the primary end-point (HR 2.13 [95% CI 1.18–3.84], p=0.01). However, statistically significance was not maintained for LUS results in the multivariable analysis when age, NYHA functional class and logNTproBNP were included in the model, although a 38% increase in the risk of suffering the primary end-point for Q4 was observed (HR 1.38 [95% CI 0.75–2.54], p=0.31). Conclusion In outpatients with stable chronic HF, the number of B-lines detected in LUS was associated with age, NYHA functional class and NTproBNP. Patients having ≥8 B-lines had a significant double risk of HF related hospitalization or all-cause death at one year. However, when strongly powerful prognostic variables such as NYHA class and NTproBNP were included in the model LUS did not retain an independent prognostic role.

AbstractAmerican alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) inhabit freshwater wetlands that are vulnerable to salinization caused by anthropogenic alterations to freshwater flow, in addition to storm surges, sea level rise, and droughts. Salinization of coastal freshwater habitats is a growing concern in a changing climate due to increased frequency and intensity of storm surges and drought conditions. This study opportunistically sampled juvenile male and female wild alligators in various salinities each month excluding November, December, and January for one year at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in coastal Louisiana. Blood plasma biochemistry parameters including electrolyte levels were subsequently measured. In addition, levels of various renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system hormones, glucocorticoids, androgens, estrogens, and progestogens were analyzed using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. Only males were sampled in hyperosmotic environments (> 10‰) during dry conditions in late summer 2018. In juvenile males, plasma Na+, Cl−, and the progestogen 17α,20β-dihydroxypregnenone were significantly and positively correlated with environmental salinity. However, variation in glucocorticoids, androgens, and estrogens were not associated with hypersaline water while sex steroids showed significant seasonal variation. This study demonstrated significant correlation of environmental salinity with electrolyte levels and a sex steroid in wild juvenile alligators, and to our knowledge represents the first measurement of 17α,20β-dihydroxypregnenone in alligators.

The initial effect of two pulses of heavy cattle grazing on chenopod shrubland plants and invertebrates in northern South Australia was assessed in a two year trial. Both plant and invertebrate communities were structured by subhabitats which were defined by edaphic and water-distribution features. The cover of grasses and the dominant shrubs, Atriplex vesicaria and Maireana astrotricha, declined significantly following grazing but only total vegetation cover was significantly lower than controls one year after grazing. Plant species richness was not affected by the grazing pulses. Abundance of ants increased, but the responses of other invertebrates were inconsistent following grazing. Rainfall had a marked effect upon both plant cover and invertebrate abundance. Key words: chenopod shrublands, pulsed cattle grazing, Atriplex vesicaria, invertebrates, bioindicators

The aim of this study was to establish the evolution curves of macro- and micro-nutrients in olive leaves and the periods of time in which they are statistically stable and can be considered suitable for a nutritional diagnosis. The study was carried out in two farms of the province of Jaén (Andalucia, Southern Spain), with olive trees of the Picual variety, under an irrigation regime and no nutritional deficiencies over the entire year. The evolution curves of each nutrient had great similarities when comparing between farms and between periods. Only in some periods the farm “Poco Humo” had higher concentrations, probably due to the most favorable edaphic characteristics of this farm. Nitrogen and phosphorus showed minimum concentrations when the leaves were young and when they were one year old, and maximum concentrations during the winter. Potassium and boron showed higher concentrations when the leaves were young, and the concentrations decreased throughout the first year of life. Concentrations of calcium, magnesium and manganese had the opposite behavior: these accumulated in leaf until reaching maximum values in winter and then remained stable, with some oscillations but without statistically significant differences. No changes were observed in the zinc concentrations in the sampled periods. Periods of at least two consecutive months without statistically significant differences were found during the winter period for all elements except nitrogen. Analytical stability was observed from the second fortnight of May till the first fortnight of August for all elements except phosphorus and boron.
