Crop-management solutions that simulate plant water-saving strategies might help to mitigate drought damage in crops. Winter canola (Brassica napus L.) is significantly drought-sensitive from flowering to mid-pod development, and drought periods lead to significant yield losses. In this study, the drought-protection efficacy of different chemicals with antitranspirant activity applied just before key drought-sensitive phenological stages was tested on field-grown canola in two years. Drought was artificially imposed with rain shelters. The results suggest that in-field application of 1 L ha–1 of antitranspirant (Vapor Gard (VG), a.i. di-1-p-menthene) at GS6.0 (BBCH growth scale, initiation of flowering) mitigated drought-induced yield loss leading to a 22% seed-yield benefit on average over 2 years of experiments compared with the unsprayed unirrigated plots. No significant yield responses were found from application at GS7.0, with increasing VG concentrations (i.e. 2 and 4 L ha–1), or with an antitranspirant with short-lasting effectiveness. The data suggest that in field conditions where drought occurs during the flowering stage, application of 1 L ha–1 of VG just before the drought event can reduce yield loss. This result should encourage further work on water-saving management strategies during key drought-sensitive phenological stages as drought mitigation tools in canola and under different environments.

SummaryThe relationship has been investigated between the yield of oil-seed rape (Brassica napus L.) plants and (a) the proportion of podless stalks, (b) the proportion of pods infested by seed weevil larvae and (c) the effect of removing a proportion of buds and pods. Plants compensated for damage and, although late removal of buds or pods sometimes caused greater yield loss than early removal, only plants with more than 60% podless stalks or buds removed had diminished yields. The numbers of podless stalks per plant increased with plant size. Removal of 60 % of a plant's pods caused no yield loss; in the field a maximum infestation of only 25% of the plant's pods with seed weevil larvae occurred. The results are discussed in relation to damage by pollen beetles (Meligethes aeneus Fab.) and seed weevils (Ceutorhynch.ua ossimilis Payk.)

Field experiments were conducted from 1986 to 1988 at Lacombe and Lethbridge, Alberta and Scott, Saskatchewan to determine growth and yield response of canola to mixtures of ethametsulfuron with specific grass herbicides. Ethametsulfuron did not usually cause canola injury when mixed with sethoxydim. However, ethametsulfuron mixtures with the following grass herbicides listed in decreasing order of injury potential, often caused canola injury and yield loss: haloxyfop > fluazifop > fluazifop-P > quizalofop > quizalofop-P. Canola yield losses were severe in some experiments, ranging from 59% with quizalofop mixtures to 97% with haloxyfop mixtures; in other experiments, the same mixtures did not cause significant yield losses. ‘Tobin,’ aBrassica rapacultivar, tended to be more susceptible to injury than theB. napuscultivars ‘Pivot’ and ‘Westar.’ Canola injury symptoms were consistent with those expected from sulfonylurea herbicides. Therefore, we suggest that specific grass herbicides differentially impair the ability of canola to metabolize ethametsulfuron to inactive forms.

Volunteer canola (Brassica napus L.) has become a common weed in producer fields, due to the large area cropped, and inherent harvest losses. Commonly grown B. napus varieties which segregate in subsequent generations to create volunteers with unknown competitive capabilities are developed by hybrid genetics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of volunteer B. napus variety and generation on competition yield loss in hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Two hybrid and one open-pollinated B. napus varieties with three consecutive generations produced from each variety were grown at varying densities in a wheat stand over 5 site-years. Yield loss depended on the density of B. napus in relation to total plant density. Generational differences in B. napus seedlings resulted in differences in wheat yield losses. Brassica napus densities at maturity provided a more robust model of wheat yield loss, as there were differences in wheat yield losses due to the interaction of generation and variety of B. napus. Commercial seed generations were the most competitive plants, while volunteer generations were less competitive. The amount of yield loss caused by volunteer B. napus was highly variable. The availability of low-priced herbicides, and the competitive ability of volunteer B. napus may allow for economic thresholds concerning weed control to be surpassed at low densities of volunteer B. napus populations. Water deficit stress considered as one of the most important limiting factors for oil seed canola (Brassica napus L.) growth and productivity in Iran. To evaluate the effects of water deficit stress on some qualitative and quantitative characteristics of canola cultivars, this experiment in a greenhouse trial carried out as factorial based on completely randomized design with three replications in Shahid Chamran University of Ahwaz (Iran). Canola cultivars, including ‘Hyola 308’, ‘Hyola 401’ and ‘RGS 003’ as first factor, and the second one was three levels of water deficit stress, including stress at early stem elongation stage to early flowering (D1), early flowering stage to early emergence of sacs (D2), beginning of stem elongation stage to early emergence of sacs (D3) and normal irrigation (C, as check). Results showed that the interaction between water deficit stress and cultivars affected biological yield, seed oil yields and harvest index (p≤0.01), dry matter and economic yield (p≤0.05). Water deficit stress reduced grain oil yields. ‘Hyola 308’ under stress at beginning stem elongation stage to early flowering had the lowest oil yields (1.1 g plants-1) and ‘Hyola 401’ under non-stress conditions showed highest oil yields (4.3 g plants-1). The decrease of oil yields at the flowering stage to stem elongation stage was more than the other stages. In addition, water deficit stress reduced harvest index in the three stress levels due to reduced economic yield and reduced biological yield. Stress susceptibility index for ‘Hyola 401’ at the beginning of stem elongation stage to early emergence of sacs was 0.914 and the ‘Hyola 308’ showed 1.12 at the beginning of stem elongation stage to early emergence of sacs respectively, which it can implies that ‘Hyola 308’ is more sensitive than ‘Hyola 401’ to water deficit stress.

Dark leaf and pod spot caused by Alternaria brassicae (Berk.) Sacc. is a serious problem both in winter and spring oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) in Lithuania. According to ten years’ data, the spread of this disease on winter oilseed rape siliques was 31.2–100%, and the severity 3.4–25.0%. The cultivars Ceres, Accord and Kasimir were used in the trials. Through the years 1997–2001 the incidence of Alternaria blight on spring oilseed rape (cv. Star and Maskot) was 94.5–100% and the severity 1.5–20.5%. Every year the severity of the disease was highly influenced by the meteorological conditions – precipitation and temperature. Fungicides, used at the end of flowering stage (DC 69) or when the first spots of the disease appeared on pods, were effective against dark pod spot.
