The title diester , Ph2C=C=C=C( COOEt )2 (2), has been prepared by a Wittig reaction between (2-bromo-3,3-diphenylprop-2-en-1-yl) triphenylphosphonium bromide and diethyl 2-oxopropane-1,3-dioate ( mesoxalic ester). The diester (2) undergoes cyclization reactions in concentrated sulfuric acid to give diethyl 2-(3'-phenyl-1H-inden-1'-y1idene)propane-l,3-dioate (4) and triethyl 3-oxo-3',9-diphenyl-2,3-dihydrospiro[lH-fluorene-1,l'-[1H]indene]-2,2,4-tricarboxylate (6), the structure of which was determined by X-ray crystallography. The title diester (2)adds cyclopentadiene across the 2,3-C=C bond to give diethyl 3-(2',2'-diphenylethenylidene)bicyclo[2.2.l]hept-5-ene-2,2-dicarboxylate (10). Alkaline hydrolysis of diester (10) gives an unstable colourless acid and a stable yellow crypto acid shown by X-ray crystallography to be 3-(2',2'-diphenylethenyl)bicyclo[2.2.l]hepta-2,5-diene-2-carboxylic acid (12). Attempts to convert diesters (2) and acid (12) into derivatives suitable for pyrolytic generation of Ph2C=C=C=C=C=O failed; The mono-acid chloride (14) yielded a small phenylazulene fraction on pyrolysis at 780-800°/0.02 mm.

For the first time, orthogonally substituted azole-carboxylate adamantane ligands were synthesized and used for preparation of coordination polymers. The angle-shaped ligands were prepared by the reaction of 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid and azoles (1H-1,2,4-triazole, 3-methyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole, 3,5-dimethyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole, 1H-tetrazole, 5-methyl-1H-tetrazole) in concentrated sulfuric acid. Variation of the solvent and substituents in azole rings allowed to prepare both 1D and 2D copper(II) and nickel(II) coordination polymers, [Cu2(trzadc)4(H2O)0.7]∙DMF∙0.3H2O, [Cu(trzadc)2(MeOH)]∙MeOH, [Ni(trzadc)2(MeOH)2] and [Cu2(mtrzadc)3(MeOH)]+NO3– (trzadc-3-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-adamantane-1-carboxylic acid; mtrzadc-3-(3-methyl-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-adamantane-1-carboxylic acid) which were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex [Cu(trzadc)2(MeOH)]∙MeOH was shown to act as a catalyst in the Chan-Evans-Lam arylation reaction.

The structure and stereochemistry of polyoximic acid, a degradation product of polyoxins, was originally designated as trans-3-ethylidene-L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid. However, total synthesis revealed that the correct structure was in fact cis-3-ethylidene-L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid, which was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The synthesis of the trans-isomer was also done and its identity was confirmed by X-ray analysis as well. The key step for constructing the four-membered ring was a rhodium catalyzed carbenoid insertion into the N—H bond of a beta-amino acid derivative. The stereoselectivity of the exo-double bond was controlled by conducting a Horner-Emmons-Wadsworth or a Wittig reaction to generate the trans- and cis-isomers, respectively. Weinreb's amide was used as a latent methyl group for the separation of trans and cis mixtures. The double bond stereochemistry of polyoximic acid in the parent polyoxin was also confirmed to be cis by extensive 2D NMR studies.Key words: diazoinsertion, azetidine, olefination.

Hydrolysis of the methyl ester (±)-threo-methyl phenidate afforded the free acid in 40% yield,viz.(±)-threo-ritalinic acid, C13H17NO2. Hydrolysis and subsequent crystallization were accomplished at pH values between 5 and 7 to yield colourless prisms which were analysed by X-ray crystallography. Crystals of (±)-threo-ritalinic acid belong to theP21/nspace group and form intermolecular hydrogen bonds. An antiperiplanar disposition of the H atoms of the (HOOC—)CH—CHpygroup (py is pyridine) was found in both the solid (diffraction analysis) and solution state (NMR analysis). It was also determined that (±)-threo-ritalinic acid conforms to the minimization of negativegauche+–gauche−interactions.

Treatment of methyl hydrogen decahydro-1,4:5,8-exo,endo-dimethanonaphthalene-4a,8a-dicarboxylate with lead tetraacetate in benzene – acetic acid replaces the carboxyl group by an acetoxy group. Hydrolysis of this product with 25% sulfuric acid at 130 °C forms 8a-hydroxydecahydro-1,4:5,8-exo,endo-dimethanonaphthalene-4a-carboxylic acid 10. The reaction between 10 and benzenesulfonyl chloride in pyridine containing triethylamine at 95 °C produces anti-sesquinorbornene 1 in 34% yield. In the absence of triethylamine 1 is converted to the hydrochloride. The iodohydroperoxide of 1 is converted by silver acetate at 0 °C to the diketone in a luminescent reaction. The 1,2-dioxetane could not be isolated. Decahydro-1,4:5,8-exo,exo-dimethanonaphthalene-4a,8a-dicarboxylic anhydride is converted slowly by methoxide ion in methanol at 150 °C to the monomethyl ester which then undergoes demethylation. The isomeric exo, endo anhydride undergoes reaction readily with methoxide ion at 80 °C.

Soluble inorganic pyrophosphatase (IPPase) catalyzes the hydrolysis of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) to form orthophosphate (Pi). The action of this enzyme shifts the overall equilibrium in favor of synthesis during a number of ATP-dependent cellular processes such as in the polymerization of nucleic acids, production of coenzymes and proteins and sulfate assimilation pathways. Two Neutron crystallographic (2.10-2.50Å) and five high-resolution X-ray (0.99Å-1.92Å) structures of the archaeal IPPase from Thermococcus thioreducens have been determined under both cryo and room temperatures. The structures determined include the recombinant IPPase bound to Mg+2, Ca+2, Br-, SO2-2 or PO4-2 involving those with non-hydrolyzed and hydrolyzed pyrophosphate complexes. All the crystallographic structures provide snapshots of the active site corresponding to different stages of the hydrolysis of inorganic pyrophosphate. As a result, a structure-based model of IPPase catalysis is devised showing the enzyme's low-energy conformations, hydration states, movements and nucleophile generation within the active site.

An efficient synthetic approach for the preparation of densely substituted furans starting from ( E)-ethyl 3-aryl-2-cyanoacrylates and ethyl glycinate hydrochloride mediated by 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene in the presence of water is investigated. The reactions are carried out under mild conditions in N,N-dimethylformamide at 95 °C. The products are cleanly obtained in 50%–57% yields, resulting in an appealing alternative for accessing polysubstituted furan-2,4-dicarboxylates. The structure of a typical product, diethyl 5-amino-3-( p-tolyl)furan-2,4-dicarboxylate, is confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

SummaryAluminium hydroxide gels have been prepared by the hydrolysis of amalgamated aluminium in water and by precipitation from aluminium salt solutions with an anion exchange resin in the hydroxyl form. The products crystallizing from such gels have been examined by electron microscopy and by X-ray and electron diffraction. Bayerite crystallizes as cone or pyramid-shaped particles and gibbsite as hexagonal plates or prisms. Two types of gel are postulated. The first type, pseudoboehmite, predominates in the absence of acids, is uncharged and rapidly crystallizes to bayerite; the second type, pregibbsite gel, occurs in carboxylic acid solutions, is positively charged and, in the absence of inorganic anions, crystallizes slowly to gibbsite.

The sulfuric acid catalyzed acylation of 2-methyl-5-nitroisocarbostyril with carboxylic acid anhydrides gave the corresponding 4-acylated derivatives 3, which underwent reductive cyclization to 2-substituted derivatives of 4-methyl-1,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrrolo[4.3.2.de]isoquinolin-5-one (4). Alkaline hydrolysis of the six-membered lactam in 4 was accompanied by a retro-Mannich reaction to produce 2-substituted indole-4-carboxylic acids in about 40 % overall yield from 3.
