Fullerene–Pyrrolidine Biferrocene Donor–Acceptor Triads: Synthesis and Effects of Fullerene[60] on the Electronic Communication of the Two Ferrocene Units in Biferrocene

A novel nanoscale molecule, fullerene[60]-based biferrocene (C60-ph-Fc-Fc), was prepared via covalent grafting of biferrocene onto C60 using 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and was fully characterized by mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry studies showed that C60-ph-Fc-Fc undergoes four successive quasi-reversible processes in the potential window of –2.0~0.40 V (versus Fc+/Fc). The biferrocene (moiety) exhibited significant electronic communication between the two ferrocenyl groups both before and after grafting onto C60. Grafting of fullerene led to weakening in the electronic interaction, and the comproportionation constant decreased by nearly five orders of magnitude from 1.56 × 106 for Fc-Fc to 88 for C60-ph-Fc-Fc, indicating that the electronic communication between halves of the biferrocene could be effectively modified by grafting of C60. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility (2–300 K) study showed that there was a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the ferrocene FeII centres.

AbstractAggregation-induced emission (AIE) has proven to be a viable strategy to achieve highly efficient room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in bulk by restricting molecular motions. Here, we show that by utilizing triphenylamine (TPA) as an electronic donor that connects to an acceptor via an sp3 linker, six TPA-based AIE-active RTP luminophores were obtained. Distinct dual phosphorescence bands emitting from largely localized donor and acceptor triplet emitting states could be recorded at lowered temperatures; at room temperature, only a merged RTP band is present. Theoretical investigations reveal that the two temperature-dependent phosphorescence bands both originate from local/global minima from the lowest triplet excited state (T1). The reported molecular construct serves as an intermediary case between a fully conjugated donor-acceptor system and a donor/acceptor binary mix, which may provide important clues on the design and control of high-freedom molecular systems with complex excited-state dynamics.

AbstractAlterations in cortical inter-areal functional connectivity, and aberrant glutamatergic signalling are implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia but the relationship between the two is unclear. We used multimodal imaging to identify areas of convergence between the two systems. Two separate cohorts were examined, comprising 195 participants in total. All participants received resting state functional MRI to characterise functional brain networks and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to measure glutamate concentrations in the frontal cortex. Study A investigated the relationship between frontal cortex glutamate concentrations and network connectivity in individuals with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Study B also used 1H-MRS, and scanned individuals with schizophrenia and healthy controls before and after a challenge with the glutamatergic modulator riluzole, to investigate the relationship between changes in glutamate concentrations and changes in network connectivity. In both studies the network based statistic was used to probe associations between glutamate and connectivity, and glutamate associated networks were then characterised in terms of their overlap with canonical functional networks. Study A involved 76 individuals with schizophrenia and 82 controls, and identified a functional network negatively associated with glutamate concentrations that was concentrated within the salience network (p < 0.05) and did not differ significantly between patients and controls (p > 0.85). Study B involved 19 individuals with schizophrenia and 17 controls and found that increases in glutamate concentrations induced by riluzole were linked to increases in connectivity localised to the salience network (p < 0.05), and the relationship did not differ between patients and controls (p > 0.4). Frontal cortex glutamate concentrations are associated with inter-areal functional connectivity of a network that localises to the salience network. Changes in network connectivity in response to glutamate modulation show an opposite effect compared to the relationship observed at baseline, which may complicate pharmacological attempts to simultaneously correct glutamatergic and connectivity aberrations.

Abstract Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using purified hematoporphyrin derivative and stereotactic intratumorally implanted optical laser fiber(s) was used to treat patients with recurrent malignant gliomas and metastatic melanoma of the brain. Tumor response to PDT was evaluated by recording changes in the volume and pattern of tumor enhancement between computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging scans done before and after PDT, metabolic changes in tumor tissue by31 P magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and patient outcome. Toxicity of PDT to brain was evaluated on the basis of changes in the patients' neurological examinations and correlated with changes in brain adjacent to tumor seen on postoperative imaging studies. Dramatic tumor responses to PDT were seen in all gliomas, but no response of tumor to treatment was seen with melanoma. Transient signs and symptoms of increased peritumoral cerebral edema caused by PDT were seen in all patients. Two patients suffered permanent neurological sequelae, monocular blindness and a partial visual field defect, as a result of treatment. Two patients with recurrent anaplastic astrocytomas remain in remission at 45 and 35 weeks after PDT. We conclude that intratumoral photoradiation therapy of hematoporphyrin derivative-photosensitized malignant gliomas effectively produces necrosis of the solid component of malignant gliomas: however, intratumoral photoradiation may not reach the portion of tumor that invades normal brain.

This study aimed to compare the effects of oral creatine (Cr) supplementation with creatine supplementation in combination with caffeine (Cr+C) on muscle phosphocreatine (PCr) level and performance in healthy male volunteers (n = 9). Before and after 6 days of placebo, Cr (0.5 g x kg-1 x day-1), or Cr (0.5 g x kg-1 x day-1) + C (5 mg x kg-1 x day-1) supplementation, 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the gastrocnemius muscle and a maximal intermittent exercise fatigue test of the knee extensors on an isokinetic dynamometer were performed. The exercise consisted of three consecutive maximal isometric contractions and three interval series of 90, 80, and 50 maximal voluntary contractions performed with a rest interval of 2 min between the series. Muscle ATP concentration remained constant over the three experimental conditions. Cr and Cr+C increased (P < 0.05) muscle PCr concentration by 4-6%. Dynamic torque production, however, was increased by 10-23% (P < 0.05) by Cr but was not changed by Cr+C. Torque improvement during Cr was most prominent immediately after the 2-min rest between the exercise bouts. The data show that Cr supplementation elevates muscle PCr concentration and markedly improves performance during intense intermittent exercise. This ergogenic effect, however, is completely eliminated by caffeine intake.

The modification of local structure of some commercial polyethylene terephthalate (PET) samples, gamma irradiated at different doses, was investigated by X-ray diffraction method before and after thermal treatment. Before the thermal treatment, the samples exposed to different doses of gamma radiations, does not show noticeable structural changes. However, the gamma exposure affects the thermal behavior of samples submitted to melting–cooling process. These modifications have been highlighted by X-ray diffraction, and confirmed also by thermal analysis and electron spin resonance spectroscopy.

We investigated the influence of forming gas annealing (FGA) before and after oxide deposition on the SiO2/4H-SiC interface defect density (Dit). For MOS capacitors (MOSCAPs) that were processed using FGAs at temperatures above 1050°C, CV characterization revealed decreased flat band voltage shifts and stretch-out for different sweep directions and frequencies. Moreover, constant-capacitance deep level transient spectroscopy (CC-DLTS) was performed and showed Dit levels below 1012 cm-2eV-1 for post deposition FGA at 1200°C. Finally, lateral MOSFETs were fabricated to analyze the temperature-dependent threshold voltage (Vth) shift.

Prion-like domains (PLDs) can drive liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in cells. Using an integrative biophysical approach that includes nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, small-angle x-ray scattering, and multiscale simulations, we have uncovered sequence features that determine the overall phase behavior of PLDs. We show that the numbers (valence) of aromatic residues in PLDs determine the extent of temperature-dependent compaction of individual molecules in dilute solutions. The valence of aromatic residues also determines full binodals that quantify concentrations of PLDs within coexisting dilute and dense phases as a function of temperature. We also show that uniform patterning of aromatic residues is a sequence feature that promotes LLPS while inhibiting aggregation. Our findings lead to the development of a numerical stickers-and-spacers model that enables predictions of full binodals of PLDs from their sequences.
