'Pseudo-star' Copolymers Formed by a Combination of RAFT Polymerization and Isocyanate-Coupling

We describe the formation of pseudo-star copolymers via incorporation of an isocyanate-bearing monomer, dimethyl meta-isopropenyl benzyl isocyanate (TMI) into a homopolymer of butyl acrylate (BA) using a one-pot, two-step synthesis. The resultant product maintains the functionality of the isocyanate moiety, which is used to attach poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether onto the copolymeric chain under benign reaction conditions. The resultant pseudo-star copolymers were isolated and their self-assembly in the presence of water studied.

Amphiphilic poly(poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PPEGMA-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) at 70 °C in a continuous tubular reactor.

Poly[(2-(α-d-mannosyloxy)ethyl acrylate)-block-(n-butyl acrylate)], P(ManA-b-BA), and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate]-block-(n-butyl acrylate)], P(OEGMEA-b-BA) diblock copolymers were mixed at various ratios to generate self-assembled structures of different morphologies.

We report a photoinitiated dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) in the presence of silica nanoparticles using a poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEG) macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro-CTA).
