Reaction of (NEt4)2[WS4] and [S2PPh2]2 in acetonitrile results in the formation of diamagnetic, orange syn-W2S2(µ-S) 2(S2PPh2)2 by an induced internal redox process. Crystals of the toluene solvate W2S2(µ-S) 2(S2PPh2)2 . C7H8 are triclinic and belong to space group P1– with a 13.845(5), b 16.536(7), c 8.387(2) Å, α 99.75(3), β 95.51(3), γ 83.08(3)˚, and Z 2. Refinement of 5445 data converged at R 0.038 and Rw 0.038. The complex possesses a syn-[W V 2S2(µ-S)2]2+ core with a W–W bond of 2.8161(5) Å and two terminal W=S bonds of 2.097(3) and 2.096(3) Å. The W-(µ-S) bond distances are in the range 2.310(2)–2.315(2) Å. Each of the five-coordinate, square-pyramidal tungsten atoms is further coordinated by a bidentate dithiophosphinate ligand with W–S bond distances ranging from 2.464(2) to 2.481(2) Å. Extended reaction of (NH4)2[WSe4] and [S2CNEt2]2 in acetonitrile produces green WS(Se2)(S2CNEt2)2 and red WO(Se2)(S2CNEt2)2 in 40% and 15% yields, respectively. Crystals of WO(Se2)(S2CNEt2)2 are monoclinic and belong to space group P21/n with a 9.609(6), b 15.053(7), c 13.120(9) Å, β 100.08(4)˚, and Z 4. Refinement of 2473 data converged at R 0.039 and Rw 0.039. The seven-coordinate, pentagonal bipyramidal complex features C1 symmetry, an axial oxo ligand (W=O 1.705(6) Å), an equatorial, side-on bonded diselenido ligand (W–Se(1) 2.509(1), W–Se(2) 2.547(1) Å, Se(1)–Se(2) 2.306(2) Å) and two bidentate dithiocarbamate ligands.

The crystal structures of the chiolite-related room temperature phases α-Na5M3F14 (MIII=Cr,Fe,Ga) are determined. For all of them, the space group is P21/n, Z=2; a=10.5096(3) Å, b=7.2253(2) Å, c=7.2713(2) Å, β=90.6753(7)° (M=Cr); a=10.4342(7) Å, b=7.3418(6) Å, c=7.4023(6) Å, β=90.799(5)° (M=Fe), and a=10.4052(1) Å, b=7.2251(1) Å, c=7.2689(1), β=90.6640(4)° (M=Ga). Rietveld refinements produce final RF factors 0.036, 0.033, and 0.035, and RWP factors, 0.125, 0.116, and 0.096, for MIII=Cr, Fe, and Ga, respectively. The MF6 polyhedra in the defective isolated perovskite-like layers deviate very few from perfect octahedra. Subtle octahedra tiltings lead to the symmetry decrease from the P4/mnc space group adopted by the Na5Al3F14 chiolite aristotype to the P21/n space group adopted by the title series. Facile twinning precluded till now the precise characterization of these compounds.

Well-shaped brown and pink isometric crystals were obtained as by-products of the synthesis of erbium selenides from the elements in evacuated and sealed silica ampoules with graphite inlets. They could be identified as erbium seleno mono- and disilicates by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and X-ray structure determination. The monosilicate Er2SeSiO4 crystallizes isotypically to Nd2SeSiO4 in the space group Pbcm with the lattice parameters a = 600.2(2), b = 688.0(2), c = 1075.2(2) pm and represents the second known seleno inosilicate of the rare earths. From X-ray structure analysis an isotypic relation between the disilicate Er3,75Ca0,25Se2,75Cl0,25Si2O7 and the compound Sm4S3Si2O7 was found, the former crystallizing in the space group I41/amd with the lattice parameters a - 1177.7(2) and c = 1376.5(2) pm. The doping o f the sorosilicate with the elements Ca and Cl originated from contam inations in the graphit inlets used in the procedure

The crystal structures of cis-(n-Bu4N)2[ReCl4(NCS)2] (triclinic, space group P1̅, a = 11,245( 1), b = 20.174(3), c = 21.320(8) Å, a =109.06(2), β = 96.46(2), γ = 98.22(5)°, Z = 4) and cis-(Ph4P)2[ReCl4(NCSe)2]·2CH2Cl2 (triclinic, space group P1̅, a = 10.341(2), b = 13.436(3), c = 19.616(4) Å, α = 92.70(2), β = 92.02(2), γ = 89.99( 1)°, Z= 2) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Both ambidentate ligands NCS and NCSe are bonded via the N atom. Using the molecular parameters of the X-ray determinations the low temperature (10 K) IR and Raman spectra of the (n-Bu4N) salts have been assigned by normal coordinate analysis based on a modified valence force field. The valence force constants fd(ReN) are 1,78(NCS) and 1,79(NCSe) mdyn/ Å.

X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) data were used to solve the crystal structures of phases in the magnesium perchlorate hydrate system, Mg(ClO4)2·nH2O (n = 4, 2). A heating stage and humidity generator interfaced to an environmental cell enabled in-situ XRD analyses of dehydration reactions under controlled temperatures and partial pressures of H2O (P_{{\rm H}_2{\rm O}}). The crystal structures were determined using an ab initio charge-flipping method and were refined using fundamental-parameter Rietveld methods. Dehydration of magnesium perchlorate hexahydrate to tetrahydrate (348 K) results in a decrease in symmetry (space group = C2), where isolated Mg2+ cations are equatorially coordinated by four H2O molecules with two [ClO4]− tetrahedra at the apices. Further dehydration to the dihydrate (423 K) leads to bridging of the isolated packets to form double corner-sharing chains of octahedra and polyhedra (space group = C2/m).

The new alkaline metal arsenates(III) were synthesized at a temperature of 500 °C via reaction of stoichiometric mixtures of the elemental alkali metals A and As2O3. In the crystal structures of the four title compounds, which have been determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction, the As(III) atoms are in ψ-tetrahedral coordination by oxygen exclusively. In NaAsO2 (orthorhombic, space group Pbcm, a = 1429.6(9), b = 677.3(3), c = 509.1(2) pm, Z = 8) and the compounds AAsO2 (A = K/Rb, orthorhombic, space group Pbcm, a = 715.1(2)/729.7(5), b =748.0(1)/775.2(5), c = 539.20(17)/541.1(3) pm, Z = 4) the AsO3 ψ-tetrahedra are condensed to form zig-zag chains [AsOO2/2]−. In the Cs phase Cs3As5O9 with a lower alkaline metal content (trigonal, space group P31m, a = 845.5(3), c = 602.6(2) pm, Z = 1) the two crystallographically independent ψ-tetrahedra AsO3/2 and AsOO2/2 are connected in a 2:3 ratio to give polar sheets [As5O9]3−.

The reactions of C(NMe2)4 (1) with Mn2(CO)10 or Co2(CO)8 in THF yield[C(NMe2)3][Co(CO)4] (3) and [C(NMe2)3][Mn(CO)5] (4), respectively. The compounds Co(CO)4NMe2 (5) and Mn(CO)5NMe2 (6) could not be found. With CH2Cl2 4 is quantitatively converted into [C(NMe2)3][Mn(CO)4Cl2] (7) as shown by IR and 13C NMR investigations. 3 and 4 were characterized by an X-ray structure determination. 3: Space group Pnma, Z = 4, a = 7.435(2), b = 10.79(2), c = 20.299(5)Å. 4: Space group C2/c, Z = 4, a = 11.378(2), b = 10.165(1), c = 14.533(1) Å; β = 103.37(1)°. The compounds form independent ions with no bonding interactions between cation and anion; the central CN3 unit of the [C(NMe2)3]+ cation in 3 and 4 is disordered.

The following compounds are isostructural with the previous one: YZn5.52Al2.48 (a = 8.6183(1), c = 16.5048(3) Å , RI = 0.078, RP = 0.116), DyZn4.96Al3.04 (a = 8.5887(1), c = 16.5002(3) Å , RI = 0.077, RP = 0.114), ErZn5.37Al2.63 (a = 8.5525(2), c =16.3997(5) Å , RI = 0.081, RP = 0.111), TmZn5.64Al2.36 (a = 8.70429(8), c = 16.3943(4) Å , RI = 0.088, RP = 0.095), LuZn5.58Al2.42 (a = 8.5616(1), c= 16.3052(3) Å , RI =0.081, RP =0.101). The intermetallic compound Yb4Zn20.3Al12.7 (a = 8.6183(1), c = 16.5048(3) Å , RI = 0.085, RP = 0.112) adopts the Yb8Cu17Al49 - type structure (space group I4/mmm). The relationship between the HoZn5Al3-type and the Yb8Cu17Al49-type structures is discussed.

With the facile displacement being utilized of thf from Yb(pin)2(thf)4 (pin = 2-phenylindol-1-yl, thf = tetrahydrofuran) in toluene solution, the complexes Yb(pin)2(dme)2 (dme = 1,2- dimethoxyethane), Yb(pin)2 (tmen)(tmen = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine) and Yb(pin)2(diglyme)(thf) (diglyme = bis(2-methoxyethyl) ether) have been prepared from the respective ligands and Yb(pin)2(thf)4. Yb(pin)2 (diglyme) (thf) [monoclinic, space group P 21 /c, a 15.35(1), b 16.179(5), c 14.45(2) Ǻ, β 107.51(8)°, Z 4, R 0.044 for 2956 (I > 3σ(I)) 'observed' reflections] has a monomeric six-coordinate structure with transoid nitrogen donor atoms, N-Yb-N 143.6(4)° and an irregular coordination polyhedron described as either a distorted trigonal prism or a monocapped square pyramid. Attempted crystallization of Yb(pin)2 (thf) by partial desolvation of Yb(pin)2(thf)4 in hot toluene, containing a trace of dme, gave a mixture of red Yb(pin)2(thf) and orange [Yb(pin)2(dme)]2. The latter was independently synthesized by partial desolvation of Yb(pin)2(dme)2 in toluene. An X-ray crystal structure showed [Yb(pin)2(dme)]2 [monoclinic, space group P 21/c, a 11 .614(2), b 15.945(7), c 15.327(4) Ǻ, β 110.19(2)°, Z 2 dimers, R 0.070 for 2314 (I ≥ 3σ(I)) 'observed' reflections] to be a dimer with two bridging pin ligands, coordinated through nitrogen only. There is an approximately square pyramidal five-coordinate ytterbium environment with an apical dme oxygen, and with two bridging nitrogens, a terminal nitrogen, and a dme oxygen in the basal plane.
