Pollen morphology of the Myrtaceae. Part 3: tribes Chamelaucieae, Leptospermeae and Lindsayomyrteae

The pollen morphology of 36 genera and 147 species from the Myrtaceae tribes Chamelaucieae, Leptospermeae and Lindsayomyrteae was surveyed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Syncolpate pollen were observed in all genera of Leptospermeae and some genera of Chamelaucieae. Genera of tribe Chamelaucieae displayed five distinct colpal morphologies, which makes it the tribe with the most diverse pollen in Myrtaceae. Six genera of Chamelaucieae, including Actinodium, Chamelaucium, Darwinia, Homoranthus, Pileanthus and Verticordia, produce large acolpate pollen not observed in any other Myrtaceae. Two of these genera produce distinct pollen; Actinodium is the only genus to have prolate-spheroidal shaped pollen, and Pileanthus pollen is large and dicolporate. A number of anomalous aperture types occurred in species of Chamelaucieae, including monocolporate (Homoranthus thomasii), pentacolporate (Calytrix oldfieldii) and hexacolporate (Sannantha tozerensis). Pollen of Lindsayomyrteae appeared similar to those of Leptospermeae and Chamelaucieae, and on the basis of pollen features, could be related to these two tribes.

This paper uses scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses and light microscopy (LM) to study pollen grains of species of the family Oleaceae Hoffmanns. & Link distributed in Vietnam, including 23 species belonging to 6 genera of the family (Oleaceae). Pollen grains of all species (Oleaceae) in Vietnam are isopolar, radial, 3- prolate pollen grains small size, with two types: subprolate type (Jasminum and Olea) and prolate spheroidal type (Jasminum, Fraxinus, Ligustrum, Osmanthus, and Chengiodendron). The surface of the pollen grains in most species is reticulate. These are important morphological features to classify the Nhai family through pollen morphology

In order to evaluate the significance of the pollen morphology for generic and infrageneric taxonomy of the genus Eremanthus (Vernonieae, Asteraceae), and to provide additional data for its phylogenetic reconstruction, the pollen of 20 of the 23 species of the genus was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Acetolysed pollen grains were measured, described, and illustrated using light microscopy, while non-acetolysed pollen grains were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of these species are isopolar, oblate-spheroidal in most of the species, more rarely prolate spheroidal or suboblate, subtriangular amb, tricolporate and subechinolophate. The variation among quantitative characters does not correlate with the macromorphological subdivision of the genus or with the generic or specific limits.

Palynomorphological characteristics of Campanula lingulata, the Balkan-Carpathian endemic species growing in Serbia, have been investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy for the first time, in order to provide some information helpful for a better understanding of the taxonomic position of this species within the genus, as well as to contribute to the pollen atlas of Serbian apiflora. The pollen grains are radially symmetrical, isopolar, 3-zonoporate and medium-sized monads oblate-sphaeroidal in shape. Mean of the polar axis (P) is 27.6?1.9 ?m, while the average length of the equatorial axis (E) is 28.8?1.6 ?m. The apertures are operculate. The sculpturing pattern of the exine is microre?ticulate-microechinatae. The exine surface is covered with evenly distributed supratectal spinules of variable length and sparse granules. The longest supratectal spinules are 0.64?0.05 ?m in length and the smallest sculptural elements are less than 0.2 ?m high. The microechinae density per sample area of 5 ?m x 5 ?m averages 17.4?2.4.

Sabinaria magnifica is so far the only known species in the recently discovered tropical palm genus Sabinaria (Arecaceae). Here we present a complete description of the pollen morphology of this palm species based on light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We also made SEM-based comparisons of Sabinaria with other genera within the tribe Cryosophileae. Pollen grains of Sabinaria magnifica resemble the other genera in the heteropolar, slightly asymmetric monads, and the monosulcate and tectate exine with perforate surface. Nevertheless, there are some clear differences with Thrinax, Chelyocarpus and Cryosophila in terms of aperture and exine. S. magnifica differs from its closest relative, Itaya amicorum, in the exine structure. This study shows that a combination of microscope techniques is essential for the identification of different genera within the Cryosophileae and may also be a necessary when working with other palynologically less distinct palm genera.

A family-wide palynological study of Myrtaceae was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). In this part of the study, the pollen morphology of 18 genera and 150 species from the Myrtaceae tribes of subfamily Myrtoideae, Eucalypteae, Lophostemoneae, Syncarpieae, Xanthostemoneae and subfamily Psiloxyloideae are presented. It was found that the most commonly observed pollen in these groups was parasyncolpate with a rugulate exine, whereas some species possessed an apocolpial island. The large, and sometimes syndemicolpate, pollen of Eucalypteae genera Angophora and Corymbia differed from all other genera. Most Eucalyptus pollen had endopores with a thickened exine.

Pollen morphology of 18 species from the genus Impatiens collected from different localities in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) during the period of February 2017 to November 2019. From the observation of pollen it was found to be structurally monad; prolate, sub-prolate and prolate-spheroidal in equatorial view; and circular, rectangular, triangular, quinquangular, elliptic and quadrangular in polar view. The apertures varied from dicolpate, tricolpate to tetracolpate. The main ornamentation type was reticulate in most of the species except Impatiens fruticosa which showed echinate ornamentation. The variations in pollen structure within the species were useful for the identification and classification of the genus Impatiens. The high structural diversity renders important taxonomic value for species differentiation.

The pollen grains of 18 species of Lagotis have been examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of whole and fractured pollen. The grains are characterized by tricolporate apertures with smooth to sparsely granular ectocolpus membranes; lolongate endoapertures with unthickened margins included within the ectocolpi; relatively large exinous processes over the endoaperture; and columellate, semitectate, reticulate to microreticulate exines with or without supramurial processes. Lumina are reduced in size toward the colpus, but the transition is gradual, and a sharply bounded, differentially sculptured colpus border is absent. Lagotis pollen is distinct from that of the Selagineae and Globularia and indistinct from that of some Veroniceae; however, the characters shared with the latter are of wide occurrence in the Scrophulariaceae. Pollen morphology supports the distinction between L. brachystachya and L. stolonifera. It is consistent with the postulated close relationship between L. micrantha and L. integra, and provides no evidence to support the reestablishment of L. cashmeriana, L. minor, L. pallasii, or L. kunawurensis as species distinct from L. glauca. In this study, the pollen morphology and exine structure of nine species of the genus Salvia L. (Lamiaceae) were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Six micromorphological characters (pollen shape, polar length, equatorial width, exine and intine thickness, colpus length and colpus width) of pollen grains of Salvia have been identified. The palynological observations revealed that pollen grains of most studied taxa of Salvia were suboblate shape and possess hekzacolpate aperture. Tectal surface sculpture was a good criterion to identify particular taxa from Salvia. The pollen of which is characterized by reticulate, the pollen ornamentation was similar in all studied taxa. Clerodendrum splendens A. Chev., Clerodendrum x speciosum Tiej. & Binn, Clerodendrum thomsonae Balf. F., Clerodendrum ugandense L., Congea tomentosa Roxb., Duranta erecta L., Petrea volubilis L. and Petrea volubilis f. albiflora (Standl.) Standl. pollen grains were acetolyzed, photographed and measured under light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Values presented are averages in micrometers. Grains are monads, radially symmetrical, isopolar, large (C. ugandense, very large, C. tomentosa, small-medium and D. erecta, medium),tricolpate (P. volubilis f. albiflora, dimorphic grains with 3-4 colpus). Ambitus is circular (C. tomentosa and D. erecta, sub-circular, P. volubilis , triangular, P. volubilis f. albiflora, triangular-quadrangular). The form is oblate-spheroidal (C. splendens, C. x speciosum, C. ugandense), prolate-spheroidal (C. thomsonae), prolate (C. tomentosa), suboblate (D. erecta) and oblate (P. volubilis, P. volubilis f. albiflora). Exine thickness is in C. splendens 4,28, C. x speciosum 4,19, C. ugandense 4,33, C. thomsonae 4,18, C. tomentosa 1,4, D. erecta 1,55, P. volubilis 2,49, P. volubilis f. albiflora 2,68. Ornamentation is micro-echinate (C. splendens, C. x speciosum, C. thomsonae), echinate (C. ugandense), reticulate (C. tomentosa), psilate (D. erecta, P. volubilis, P. volubulis f. albiflora). Duranta and Petrea are close to Verbenaceae pattern, Congea to Lamiaceae and Clerodendrum loosely to Lamiaceae.
