A necrotrophic reaction of Nicotiana species to infection by Peronospora tabacina Adam is described that is characterized by the rapid production of localized necrotic lesions involving one or a few cells.

A necrotrophic reaction in leaf discs of a wide range of Nicotiana and other Solanaceous and non-Solanaceous species following infection by Peronospora tabacina Adam is described.With a few exceptions, species resistant to the pathogen developed water-soaking or gave no reaction, whereas susceptible species showed necroses affecting 60-100% of the leaf disc area. The degree if necrotrophic reaction is related to the resistance-susceptibility status of Nicotiana species, and it may be extended to detect susceptibility to the pathogen in Petunia, Capsicum, Lycopersicon, Hyoscyamus, Schizanthus, and other genera related ti Nicotiana.

Seedlings of Nicotiana species of Australian and American origin were tested for resistance to an Australian strain of P. tabacina. American species were less resistant than Australian species and differences in 12 results of similar tests in both countries could have been due to differences in the pathogen or in the seed lines tested. The data suggest that the pathogen would have difficult in surviving on the highly resistant Australian species of Nicotiana in their natural arid habitat. Field observations have shown that survival occurs on the introduced susceptible species N. tabacum and N. glauca.

A comparison was made between the performances of a large.plant test, the cotyledon test, and a test based on the necrotrophic reaction for assessment of the resistance-susceptibility status of various tobacco species and breeding lines to infection by Perono8pora tabacina Adam. All three methods were shown to give similar assessments and it is suggested that the necrotrophy test gives an accurate measure of intrinsic resistance.

The rapid production of films of diversity in post-1994 South Africa has unfortunately not been matched by critical works on film. Part of the reason is that some of the films recycle old themes that celebrate the worst in black people. Another possible reason could be that a good number of films wallow in personality praise, and certainly of Mandela, especially after his demise. Despite these problems of film criticism in post-1994 South Africa, it appears that some new critics have not felt compelled to waste their energy on analysing the Bantustan film – a kind of film that was made for black people by the apartheid system but has re-surfaced after 1994 in different ways. The patent lack of more critical works on film that engages the identities and social imaginaries of young and white South Africans is partly addressed in SKIN – a film that registers the mental growth and spiritual development of Sandra’s multiple selves. This article argues that SKIN portrays the racial neurosis of the apartheid system; and the question of identity affecting young white youths during and after apartheid is experienced at the racial, gender and sex levels.

Expediency, efficiency, and rapid production within compressed time frames represent markers for research and scholarship within the neoliberal academe. Scholars who wish to resist these practices of knowledge production have articulated the need for Slow scholarship—a slower pace to make room for thinking, creativity, and useful knowledge. While these calls are important for drawing attention to the costs and problems of the neoliberal academy, many scholars have moved beyond “slow” as being uniquely referencing pace and duration, by calling for the different conceptualizations of time, space, and knowing. Guided by post-structural feminisms, we engaged in a research project that moved at the pace of trust in the integrity of our ideas and relationships. Our case study aimed to better understand the ways macro forces such as neoliberalism, criminalization and professionalization shape domestic violence work. This article discusses our praxis of Slow scholarship by showcasing four specific key markers of Slow scholarship in our research; time reimagined, a relational ontology, moving inside and towards complexity, and embodiment. We discuss how Slow scholarship complicates how we understand constructs of productivity and knowledge production, as well as map the ways Slow scholarship offers a praxis of resistance for generating power from the epistemic margins within social work and the neoliberal academy.

Rapid production of prawn (Litopenaeus vannamei) under artificial pressure can result in a series of obvious challenges and is vulnerable to serious losses related to aquatic environmental issues and the unrestrained outbreak of white spot syndrome (WSS). However, to date, there are no therapeutic strategies to contain the spread of the virus. Here, we synthesized 27 coumarin deriv-atives and evaluated their anti-white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) activity in L. vannamei larvae. We demonstrated that electron-withdrawing and electron-giving substituent groups play an im-portant role in reducing toxicity and WSSV replication, respectively. Two coumarin C2 (2-amino-5-oxo-4-(p-tolyl)-4H,5H-pyrano[3,2-c]chromene-3-carbonitrile) and C7 (2-amino-4-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-oxo-4H,5H-pyrano[3,2-c]chromene-3-carbonitrile) were regarded as the most promising anti-WSSV compounds with maximum antiviral response <5% and median effective concentration <10 mg/L. The mortality of WSSV-infected larvae decreased by more than 60% after exposure to C2 and C7. With continuous immersion of C2 and C7 exchange, the mortality further decreased to 40% at 120 h.Additionally, C2 and C7 are the relatively stable in aquacultural water, making these agents
