Management of Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens pastures in the subtropics. II. Effect of summer defoliation, irrigation duration, seedbed preparation and pasture type

This study on the north coast of New South Wales, Australia, evaluated the effect of irrigation and defoliation management over summer, pasture type and seedbed preparation on production and survival of a perennial ryegrass pasture over an 18-month period from sowing. In a relatively dry summer, irrigation sufficient only to keep plants growing, increased production of ryegrass plus clover from 2826 to 5515 and 3210 to 5396 kg DM/ha in summer and the subsequent autumn/winter, respectively, and increased survival of ryegrass plants by 34%. The more summer active Olwen white clover/NZA895 perennial ryegrass combination had a 16% higher production in summer, but a 11% lower production in winter than a Haifa/Yatsyn sward. The difference in production was entirely due to the clover component of the pasture. DM yield in the first growing season for the ryegrass/white clover pasture was equivalent to applying 20 kg N/ha/month to a pure ryegrass sward. In the subsequent summer/autumn/winter, the yield of pure ryegrass pasture was well below the ryegrass/white clover swards at any rate of N application. There was no difference between survival of NZA895 and Yatsyn ryegrass or incursion of summer grass into their respective plots. Plots defoliated over summer at 6 cm, as opposed to 12 cm, stubble height yielded 54% more edible DM and resulted in a 65% higher ryegrass plant survival rate. There was no effect on summer grass incursion. Multiple cultivations appear to be the key to appropriate seedbed preparation, with this treatment achieving the highest ryegrass survival rate, lowest summer grass incursion and highest DM yields.

The effectiveness of chemical seedbed preparation for sod-sown oats was studied using varying intervals between spraying and sowing. Four herbicides were compared in a second experiment. Both experiments were conducted on paspalum (Paspalum dilatatum) dominant pastures on red basaltic soil on the North Coast of New South Wales. Herbicides were most effective when applied at 6.7 kg acid equivalent a hectare. At this rate, the highest yields of dry matter and nitrogen were obtained when there was a three-week interval and considerably less when there was no interval. A mixture of 2,2-DPA (2,2-dichloropropionic acid) and amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) was more effective than 2,2-DPA alone with a three-week spraying interval but there was no difference with a six-week interval. Both amitrole and a mixture of amitrole and ammonium thiocyanate were ineffective for chemical seedbed preparation on paspalum pastures;

Several methods of seedbed preparation were compared for sowing Dolichos Lablab into paspalum dominant pastures on the North Coast of New South Wales. Competition from grass reduced the growth of dolichos seedlings. Dolichos yields were highest when cultivation reduced grass growth by at least 70 per cent, or when the seedbed was sprayed with 10 kg acid equivalent 2,2-DPA per hectare. The results suggested that lack of effective nodulation when seed was inoculated with Rhizobium strain CB 454 or NA 106 was a prime factor in the low competitive ability of dolichos seedlings. It is concluded that cultivation is the better method of reducing grass competition because it also causes mineralization of soil nitrogen. This ensures an adequate nitrogen supply even if inoculation fails.

A survey of 12 white clover-based dairy pastures on the north coast of New South Wales and south-eastern Queensland, Australia, detected 65 species of fungi and 6 nematode species. The fungi included species of Fusarium, Gliocladium, Codinaea, Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Drechslera, Rhizoctonia, Phoma, Pythium, Phytophthora, Penicillium, Rhizopus and Trichoderma from roots and stolons of white clover. Fungal rots of roots and stolons were most severe during the summer months (November and January samples), while root-knot symptoms caused by plant parasitic nematodes were more severe in June. Sedentary endoparasitic nematodes Meloidogyne trifoliophila, Heterodera trifolii and the ectoparasitic nematode Helicotylenchus dihystera were the numerically dominant nematodes in the region. Other nematode species, including Pratylenchus, Xiphinema and Tylenchorhynchus, were present at lower frequencies and principal component analysis indicated that these were less important as white clover pathogens. Meloidogyne trifoliophila was detected for the first time in Australia and was present at all sites. Many of the fungi and nematodes found are common pathogens of white clover. These pathogens are likely to be contributing to the poor seedling performance, growth and persistence of white clover typical in dairy pastures of the subtropical east coast of Australia.

Temperament scores were taken on 8-month-old calves from five calf drops (1976-80) and over three sections of a large crossbreeding trial on the North Coast of New South Wales. A 0-5 scale was used, with lower values for quieter cattle. The heritability �s.e. of temperament score of Bos taurus calves (sired by Hereford, Simmental and Friesian bulls) was 0.03�0.28, and for B. indicus-sired calves (Brahman, Braford and Africander bulls) 0.46�0.37, and for all data combined 0.44�0.25. There was a significant difference (P < 0.01) between the mean score of Brahman-sired halfbred calves (1.96) and B. taurus-sired calves (1.05). The difference was halved to 0.45 points for quarterbred Brahman calves versus B. taurus calves, i.e. as expected for an additive trait. There were significant differences in temperament among calves sired by B. indicus bulls, but there were no significant differences amongst the B. taurus sire breeds. The repeatability (mean � s.e.) of operators' score of 701 weaner calves was 0.67�0.08. From temperament scores of 315 cows at weaning in 1981, an operator repeatability of 0.82�0.08 was obtained. Correlations of cow and calf score were not consistent, but averaged 0.18�0.04 from 547 records. The repeatability of scores taken at two separate times on 132 calves, was 0.43�0.09. The group given a medium level of nutrition had significantly higher temperament scores than those given high or low levels. Sex effects were not significant on scores at weaning. A log transformation of the data equalized the variance of scores of different breeds, but did not affect the conclusions.

Conventional sod-seeding in a paspalum (Paspalum dilatatum) sward was compared with both chemically prepared and cultivated seedbeds for growing oats. Experiments were conducted on red and chocolate basaltic soils on the North Coast of New South Wales. Three times of sowing, and three rates of herbicide for chemical seedbed preparation were also used in the red soil experiment, and two times of sowing were used in the other. Sod-sown oats yielded poorly on the red soil and either cultivation or chemical seedbed preparation gave much higher yields at all times of sowing. Sod-sown oats grew better on the chocolate soil and yield increases from cultivation or chemical seedbed preparation were proportionately less than on the red soil. There was a trend, but not significant, for higher yields to be obtained from cultivated than from chemical seedbeds in the earliest sowings on the red soil. This effect was significant on the chocolate soil. The results indicate that under low fertility conditions, it is essential to use some form of seedbed preparation when growing oats.

Inputs and losses from Giant Parramatta grass [GPG, Sporobolus indicus (L.) R. Br. var. major (Buse) Baaijens] soil seed banks were quantified on the North Coast of New South Wales. Monthly potential seed production and actual seed fall was estimated at Valla during 1991-92. Total potential production was >668 000 seeds/m2 for the season, while seed fall was >146000 seeds/m2. Seed fall >10000 seeds/m2.month was recorded from January until May, with further seed falls recorded in June and July. The impact of seed production on seed banks was assessed by estimating seed banks in the seed production quadrats before and after seed fall. Seed banks in 4 of the 6 sites decreased in year 2, although seed numbers at 1 damp site increased markedly. Defoliation from mid-December until February, April or June prevented seed production, reducing seed banks by 34% over 7 months. Seed banks in undefoliated plots increased by 3300 seeds/m2, although seed fall was estimated at >114 000 seeds/m2. Emergence of GPG seedlings from artificially established and naturally occurring, persistent seed banks was recorded for 3 years from bare and vegetated treatment plots. Sown seeds showed high levels of innate dormancy and only 4% of seeds emerged when sown immediately after collection. Longer storage of seeds after collection resulted in more seedlings emerging. Estimates of persistent seed banks ranged from 1650 to about 21260 seeds/m2. Most seedlings emerged in spring or autumn and this was correlated with rainfall but not with ambient temperatures. Rates of seed bank decline in both bare and vegetated treatment plots was estimated by fitting exponential decay curves to seed bank estimates. Assuming no further seed inputs, it was estimated that it would take about 3 and 5 years, respectively, for seed banks to decline to 150 seeds/m2 in bare and vegetated treatments.

1999/2000 and 2000/2001 were the first two complete seasons of a replicated farm systems trial designed to measure the effects on whole farm profitability (Economic Farm Surplus (EFS) of mixtures of ryegrasses and white clovers released on to the market recently, or at least 15 years ago, and rotationally grazed by dairy cows. All the pastures were sown in late autumn 1998. There were four treatments with all combinations of 1980s (80R), and late 1990s (98R) ryegrasses, and 1960s (60C)and late 1990s (98C) white clovers, each replicated 3.0 times in a randomised block design giving twelve 4-ha, self-contained farmlets stocked with three Friesian cows/ha. Milksolids production was unaffected by either ryegrass or clover cultivar age, but there was a significant ryegrass x clover cultivar interaction reflected as higher milksolids production on the 80R/98C treatment than the 98R/98C treatment in 1999/2000. This was a result of a higher clover content in the 80R/98C pastures compared with other treatments. Although the difference in clover content was still present in 2000/2001, the wetter summerÂ-autumn meant the ryegrass maintained a higher nutritive value than in the previous season under dry conditions, so clover content did not affect milksolids production in 2000/2001. There were no main treatment effects on EFS in either season, but there was a significant ryegrass x clover interaction in 1999/2000 shown as a higher EFS on the 80R/98C treatment than on the 98R/98C treatment. Much recent academic and public discourse has centred on the fate of non-metropolitan Australia under successive federal neoliberal reform agendas. This paper discusses creative networks in non-metropolitan areas in light of this, with a focus on issues of youth unemployment and out-migration. First, it draws on research on creative industry development on the New South Wales Far North Coast to assess the efficacy of creative networks as a source of new job growth in rural areas. Second, and more broadly, the paper discusses the North Coast Entertainment Industry Association (NCEIA), a nascent creative network in the region. Several observations are drawn from its experiences. Creative networks in non-metropolitan areas face problems of informal and itinerant membership, and anti-socialisation attitudes, Yet they appear to have a substantial role in improving the conditions of viability for vulnerable cultural producers. When conceived as part of interventionist strategies to promote youth employment and to stem the youth exodus from rural areas, they may also have sociodemographic implications beyond the scope of their original intent.
