The effect of density and plant arrangement on the performance of individual plants in barley and wheat crops

The spatial relationships and growth of individual plants were studied in barley and wheat crops to determine the influence of size and distance of neighbouring plants on the development of individuals within the population. Plants were harvested individually, and their positions recorded by X and Y coordinates. The dry weights within quadrats were categorized in 10 weight classes and plotted for visual analysis. A reciprocal equation was used to relate the weight of individual plants to 'competitive pressure' of near neighbours. The estimate of competitive pressure was based on the weight and distance of neighbours. Both visual analysis and numerical analysis failed to find a direct effect of space available or the location of near neighbours on the growth of individual plants. It is suggested that in dense cereal crops differences in time of emergence and quality of soil environment may over-ride the advantage of an increased spatial environment for individual plants.

The aim of this study was to test Wilson & Cleary’s conceptual model of the direct and mediated pathways between clinical and non-clinical variables in relation to oral health-related quality of life. A random sample of 578 older people was evaluated. Wilson & Cleary’s conceptual model was tested using structural equations modeling including: biological variables, symptom status, functional health, oral health perceptions, oral health-related quality of life. Oral health-related quality of life was assessed with the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). In the final model, edentulism was negatively correlated to dissatisfaction of appearance of their dental prostheses (r = -0.25). Worse functional status was correlated with poor oral health perception (r = 0.24). Being aged over 68 (r = 0.25), being a female (r = 0.39) and living in rural areas (r = 0.15) had a direct effect on the edentulism. Age had a direct effect on OHIP-14 (r = -0.15). There was an indirect effect of sex on OHIP-14 via functional status (r = 0.12). The present findings partially support Wilson & Cleary’s model framework.

East Java statistics indicate that the total population of East Java Province is increasing every year. The increase in the population is followed by an increase in social problems, including unemployment. The unemployment rate can affect the economy of the society. Efforts must be made to reduce it by improving the quality of society through factors related to education and health. According to data from East Java in 2017, East Java's education has a significant positive direct effect on the East Java economy of 0.343%, while indirectly through unemployment has an insignificant effect increased by 0.0021%. In addition, health has no significant direct and indirect effect on the East Java economy with coefficients of 0.078% and -0.0023%, respectively.

The modern agricultural sector is mainly dependent on synthetic fertilizer for enhancing the growth of crop improvements but a burden of inorganic and chemical-based fertilizer currently created a serious threat to human health as well as the soil environment. Fertilizer research is therefore focusing on an alternative to chemical fertilizer by exploiting natural sources such as marine macroalgae or seaweed. The use of seaweed will be an eco-friendlier approach to sustainable agriculture. Marine macroalgae or seaweed widely applicable in plant growth enhancements due to the presence of biological active phycocompounds such as proteins, phenolic compounds, amino acids, polysaccharides, plant-growth-promoting hormones, and some growth factors, etc. Several research studies have been carried out on the applicability of seaweed or the effect of marine algae or its components on plants and its quality. These types of constituents play their role in improving the morphological as well as biochemical characteristics of plants. The present review study focuses on the applicability of marine macroalgae as a biofertilizer or plant growth stimulator in agricultural applications. This study further helps to improve the nutritional quality of crops which prove to be useful in further investigations and applications. Brazil has a large variety of native and exotic fruit species, including the gabiroba, which can be sources of income for the population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the post-harvest behavior of gabiroba fruit by maturity stage and storage temperature. The fruits were divided into two lots and stored at temperatures of 6, 12, 24 and 30°C. The first batch was used for the physical and chemical analysis of acidity, soluble solids, firmness, percentage of green color, and visual analysis; this batch was composed of green and yellow-green fruit. The second lot was intended for breath analysis, composed of green, yellow-green, and yellow fruits. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with five replications. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Considering the evaluated characteristics, the gabiroba soluble solid/titratable acidity ratio values should be approximately 4.0 for the fruits to be considered acceptable for consumption. For the preservation of the post-harvest quality of gabiroba, it is indicated that the harvest is carried out at the green stage of maturation and that they are stored at a temperature of 6°C. The highest respiratory rates were observed in fruits harvested at the yellow stage, not being recommended its storage.

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of time, its manifestations in the Samara historical environment. The reflection of different modes of time in the spatial environment is an important quality of the “real” city, it gives the place emotional depth, defines identity, forms the spiritual and cultural life of the inhabitants. The material analyzes the following time modes: irreversible change, infinity, eternity. It is revealed that the historical environment of Samara has the quality of multitemporality (the presence of several forms of time perception), formed over a long period of time.

Background: As a kind of bionic robot, the bionic water strider robot can achieve sliding, jumping and other movements on the water surface, with advantages of small size, light weight, flexible movements and other characteristics. It can detect the quality of water, investigate and search the water surface and perform some other operations. It has a very broad range of applications and development prospects. Therefore, the trend of biomimetic water strider robot is catching more and more attention. Objective: To provide an overview of the bionic water strider robot and introduce their classification, characteristics and development. Methods: This paper reviews various productions and patents related to the bionic water strider robot from 2003 to the present. The sources of the papers include: CNKI, Wanfang, Patent publication announcement in China, Web of Science, IEEE, Elsevier, Springer-Verlag, Espacenet, FPO IP Research amp; Communities. To obtain the results, endnote is used for documentation and citesapce was used for visual analysis. Results: The mechanical structure of existing bionic water strider robots is analyzed and compared. The typical characteristics are concluded. The main problems in its development are analyzed and the development trend is foreseen. The current and future research of the productions and patents on the bionic water strider robot are discussed. Conclusion: The optimization and development of the structure of the bionic water strider robot and the development of associated components help to improve the simulation of the water strider's motion and to perform better on task in a complex water surface environment. In the future, with the deepening and improvement of the research, the bionic water strider robot will develop towards miniaturization, intelligence and integration.

Purpose This paper aims to consider the visual literacy mobilized by consumers in their use of brand aesthetics to construct and communicate a curated self. Design/methodology/approach The research surveyed a range of visual material from Instagram. Specifically, the goal was to use “compositional interpretation”, an approach to visual analysis that is not methodologically explicit but which, in itself, draws upon the visual literacy of the researcher to provide a descriptive analysis of the formal visual quality of images as distinct from their symbolic resonances. The research also incorporates 10 phenomenological-type interviews with consumers. Consistent with a phenomenological approach, informants were selected because they have “lived” the experience under investigation, in this case requiring them to be keen consumers of the Orla Kiely brand. Findings Findings indicate that consumers deploy their visual literacy in strategic visualization (imaginatively planning and coordinating artifacts with other objects in their collection, positioning and using them as part of an overall visual repertoire), composition (becoming active producers of images) and emergent design (turning design objects into display pieces, repurposing design objects or simply borrowing brand aesthetics to create designed objects of their own). Research limitations/implications This research has implications for the understanding of visual literacy within consumer culture. Engaging comprehensively with the visual compositions of consumers, this research moves beyond brand symbolism, semiotics or concepts of social status to examine the self-conscious creation of a curated self. The achievement of such a curated self depends on visual literacy and the deployment of abstract design language by consumers in the pursuit of both aesthetic satisfaction and social communication. Practical implications This research has implications for brand designers and managers in terms of how they might control or manage the use of brand aesthetics by consumers. Originality/value To date, there has been very little consumer research that explores the nature of visual literacy and even less that offers an empirical investigation of this concept within the context of brand aesthetics. The research moves beyond brand symbolism, semiotics and social status to consider the deployment of abstract visual language in communicating the curated self.

Integrity constraints of various kinds must be observed when creating or updating a database in order to preserve the semantics and the quality of stored data (Elmasri & Navathe, 2000). Within the scope of geographic applications, integrity assurance requires special attention from the designer, since most geographic applications use data that depend on spatial relationships (Egenhofer & Franzosa, 1991), thereby requiring the specification of spatial integrity constraints.
