Establishment and growth of shoots following low and high cutting of lucerne in relation to the pattern of nutrient uptake

Lucerne plants (Medicogo sativa cv. Hunter River) were either frequently or infrequently cut down and subsequent differences in shoot regrowth were compared in two experiments. The first experiment demonstrated that differences in final shoot weights arose from differences developed during the first 7 days of regrowth. High level cutting (15 cm) increased the shoot yield of frequently but not of infrequently cut plants. Net uptake of both nitrogen and phosphorus was related to the growth rate of shoots until commencement of flowering, when uptake ceased for c. 15 days even though both roots and shoots continued to gain weight. Towards the end of flowering uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus recommenced and accumulation of both nutrients occurred in the tap-root and lateral roots. The relative nitrogen and phosphorus content of leaves on crown shoots was highest on day 7 and the same for frequently and infrequently cut plants. Leaves on crown and stubble shoots 7 days after high level cutting had a significantly lower relative nitrogen and phosphorus content than leaves on plants cut low. Thereafter the relative nitrogen and phosphorus content of a11 leaves declined with the greatest decline occurring after the commencement of flowering. In the second experiment early morphogenesis of the shoot population was investigated. Establishment of shoots was completed between 3 and 5 days after cutting. Higher shoot weights on infrequently cut plants were accounted for by a larger number of small shoots at the time of cutting. Relative growth rates of shoots did not appear to be influenced by prior cutting frequency. The relative nitrogen content of buds and shoot apices was low at cutting but doubled within 2 or 3 days and then declined after day 7. These results are discussed in relation to the role of 'plant factors' in shoot regrowth of lucerne.

In this study, plant growth and nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency in lab-scale CWs by five plants (H. vulgaris, N. peltatum, N. tetragona, N. pumilum, S. trifolia) in winter in Sichuan basin was evaluated. H. vulgaris and N. tetragona would well adapt to the winter wetland environment, and the relative growth at the end of the experiment was 89.83% and 66.85%, respectively. In winter, H. vulgaris kept growing with accumulated stems and leaves, while growth of N. tetragona was mainly caused by the growth of roots and stems underwater. In addition, during the winter, removal efficiencies were 66.29%, 57.47%, 54.78%, 55.47%, 41.66% of TN and 62.40%, 69.75%, 69.97%, 65.65%, 76.55% of TP for each planted CWs respectively. The results indicated that the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from CWs was mainly achieved by substrate, while a small portion was attributed by plant. However, plants like H. vulgaris and N. tetragona, in the CWs in winter can play the role of landscaping. Thus, H. vulgaris could be considered as a suitable and effective nutrient removal plant for treatment of nitrogen and phosphorus water in winter wetlands in Sichuan basin.

Relative growth rates (RGR) of nine annual pasture species and lucerne were compared in two experiments. During the first 4 weeks of growth the RGR of the clovers tended to be slower than that of the herbs and grasses, especially at low levels of applied phosphate. This situation was reversed towards maturity. Slow RGR of the tops of the clovers at low phosphorus levels was associated with the development of large root systems relative to tops; but at least in subterranean clover, the RGR of the roots was also slow. Other associated characteristics of the clovers, a month from emergence and at low phosphorus levels, were low phosphorus concentrations in the tops relative to non-legumes, and a low proportion of their total phosphorus in the tops. The phosphorus content per unit weight of clover roots was low under these conditions. Differences between species in early growth rate were maintained on different sods, even though the soil solution contained widely different concentrations of phosphate. Establishment of species In the field, particularly during the seedling stage, is discussed in relation to growth rates at low and optimal levels of phosphorus.

While it is known that nitrogen fertilisers improve phosphorus uptake depending on soil type and pH, the role in phosphorus uptake of the ratio of nitrate to ammonium in nitrogen fertiliser banded with phosphorus fertiliser is unclear. The present glasshouse study investigated the wheat growth response to different rates of application and banding depths (5 and 15 cm) of nitrogen and phosphorus, and mixing of phosphorus fertiliser with soil. The effect of 2 forms of nitrogen (ammonium and nitrate) banded with phosphorus fertiliser was also studied.Both banding depths increased phosphorus uptake and wheat growth more than mixing fertiliser throughout the soil. Banding at the 5 cm depth increased phosphorus uptake efficiency and wheat growth more than banding at the 15 cm depth. The highest shoot and root growth and phosphorus content were found when the nitrate : ammonium ratio was 50 : 50 and 75 : 25, with a slight decline at 100 : 0. The treatments with a large proportion of ammonium suppressed the growth of wheat and, consequently, reduced total phosphorus content. It was concluded that banding nitrate and ammonium at ratios 50 : 50, 75 : 25 and 100 : 0 with phosphorus fertiliser at 5 cm depth was optimal for increasing phosphorus uptake and wheat growth.

AbstractThe role of silicon (Si) in alleviating the effects of biotic and abiotic stresses, including defence against insect herbivores, in plants is widely reported. Si defence against insect herbivores is overwhelmingly studied in grasses (especially the cereals), many of which are hyper-accumulators of Si. Despite being neglected, legumes such as soybean (Glycine max) have the capacity to control Si accumulation and benefit from increased Si supply. We tested how Si supplementation via potassium, sodium or calcium silicate affected a soybean pest, the native budworm Helicoverpa punctigera Wallengren (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Herbivory reduced leaf biomass similarly in Si-supplemented (+Si) and non-supplemented (–Si) plants (c. 29 and 23%, respectively) relative to herbivore-free plants. Both Si supplementation and herbivory increased leaf Si concentrations. In relative terms, herbivores induced Si uptake by c. 19% in both +Si and –Si plants. All Si treatments reduced H. punctigera relative growth rates (RGR) to a similar extent for potassium (−41%), sodium (−49%) and calcium (−48%) silicate. Moreover, there was a strong negative correlation between Si accumulation in leaves and herbivore RGR. To our knowledge, this is only the second report of Si-based herbivore defence in soybean; the rapid increase in leaf Si following herbivory being indicative of an induced defence. Taken together with the other benefits of Si supplementation of legumes, Si could prove an effective herbivore defence in legumes as well as grasses.

A multisubunit RNA polymerase enzyme is ultimately responsible for transcription initiation and elongation of RNA, but recognition of the proper start site by the enzyme is regulated by general, temporal and gene-specific trans-factors interacting at promoter and enhancer DNA sequences. To understand the molecular mechanisms which precisely regulate the transcription initiation event, it is crucial to elucidate the structure of the transcription factor/DNA complexes involved. Electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI) provides the opportunity to visualize individual DNA molecules. Enhancement of DNA contrast with ESI is accomplished by imaging with electrons that have interacted with inner shell electrons of phosphorus in the DNA backbone. Phosphorus detection at this intermediately high level of resolution (≈lnm) permits selective imaging of the DNA, to determine whether the protein factors compact, bend or wrap the DNA. Simultaneously, mass analysis and phosphorus content can be measured quantitatively, using adjacent DNA or tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as mass and phosphorus standards. These two parameters provide stoichiometric information relating the ratios of protein:DNA content.

This article uses the concepts of ‘transnational social fields’ and ‘habitus’ to explore the multifaceted role families play in shaping the aspirations of onward migrating youth. The article draws on biographical life history interviews conducted with the children of Iranian migrants who were raised in Sweden but moved to London, UK as adults. The findings of the study suggest that from a young age, all the participants were pressured by their parents to perform well academically, and to achieve high level careers. These goals were easier to achieve in London than in Sweden for several reasons. Interestingly, however, participants’ understandings of what constituted success and their motivations for onward migration were nuanced and varied considerably by gender. The study contributes to an understanding of the role of multi-sited transnational social fields in shaping the aspirations of migrant youths, as well as the strategies taken up by these migrants to achieve their goals.

The present study was undertaken to explore the decision making patterns of college girls in relation to clothing and their satisfaction level with these decision making patterns. Thirty under graduate college girls from Panipat city were approached to record their responses regarding decision making in relation to clothing and satisfaction level through a well structured questionnaire. It was found that most of the girls (56.66%) themselves made the decisions about the type of garment (Indian, western or both) they wear and majority of girls (70%) were highly satisfied with this decision making. Parents performed the role of buyers for their college going daughters' garments in most of the cases (63.33%) and the 73.33% girls had high level of satisfaction with this. In most of the cases (60%) the decision about the garment design was made by the girls themselves and they were highly satisfied with it. Keywords: clothing, college, girls, decision making.

It is sometimes said that "national planning will simply have no meaning if it completely ignores the economic disparities between the two wings and fails to evolve a sensible pattern of regional planning"2. The lack of much essential data on a regional basis, however, renders any precise estimate of the relative growth rates almost impossible. Data either are not available or are inadequate on such important variables as production, income, consumption and trade, so that even a correct evaluation of past development efforts is not possible. The implications of such a situation for future planning are not difficult to understand. In this article an attempt is made to estimate the absorption of specified commodities in East and West Pakistan separately3. This will indicate the pattern of consumption and also give a rough idea about the growth rate of the two wings. With this purpose in view, quantity indices of absorption are prepared for each wing separately, taking data on availability of goods and prices from the Institute's monograph on Inflation. The quantity indi¬ces, however, are not of course strictly comparable with national income estimates because of the difference in coverage of the two series. National income data include government, services, trade, etc., while the quantity indices cover only specified goods available for each region.

В течение четырех столетий османского владычества территория исторической Сирии (Билад аш-Шам) была одним из важнейших компонентов османской системы и играла роль связующего звена между Анатолией, Египтом, Ираком и Хиджазом. Необходимость ежегодной организации хаджа с символами султанской власти и покровительства над святынями Мекки и Медины определяла особую стратегическую важность сирийских провинций Османской империи. Несмотря на ряд серьезных угроз во время общего кризиса османской государственности (конец XVI начало XIX вв.), имперскому центру удалось сохранить контроль над Сирией путем создания сдержек и противовесов между местными элитами. В XIX в. и особенно в период правления Абдул- Хамида II (18761909 гг.), сохранение Сирии под османским контролем стало вопросом существования Османской империи, которая перед лицом растущего европейского давления и интервенции потеряла большую часть своих владений на Балканах и в Северной Африке. Задача укрепления связей между имперским центром и периферией в сирийских вилайетах в последней четверти XIX в. была в целом успешно решена. К началу XX в. Сирия была одним из наиболее политически спокойных и прочно связанных со Стамбулом регионов Османской империи. Этому в значительной степени способствовали довольно высокий уровень общественной безопасности, развитие внешней торговли, рост образования и постепенная интеграция местных элит (как мусульман, так и христиан) в османские государственные и социальные механизмы. Положение Сирии в системе османских владений показало, что процесс ослабления и территориальной дезинтеграции Османской империи в эпоху реформ не был линейным и наряду с потерей владений и влияния на Балканах, в азиатской части империи в течение XIX и начала XX вв. происходил параллельный процесс имперской консолидации.Abstract The article examines the role and place of Greater Syria (including Lebanon and Palestine) in the system of Ottoman possessions over several centuries from the Ottoman conquest to the period of the reign of Abdul Hamid II. For four centuries of Ottoman domination, the territory of historical Syria (Bilad al-Sham) was one of the most important components in the Ottoman system and played the role of a link between Anatolia, Egypt, Iraq and Hijaz. The need to ensure the Hajj with symbols of Sultan power and patronage over the shrines of Mecca and Medina each year determined the special strategic importance of the Syrian provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Despite a number of serious threats during the general crisis of the Ottoman state system (late 16th early 19th centuries), the imperial center managed to maintain control over Syria by creating checks and balances between local elites. In the 19th century. And especially during the reign of Abdul Hamid II (18761909), keeping Syria under Ottoman control became a matter of existence for the Ottoman Empire, which, in the face of increasing European pressure and intervention, lost most of its possessions in the Balkans and North Africa. The task of strengthening ties between the imperial center and the periphery in Syrian vilayets in the last quarter of the 19th century was generally successfully resolved. By the beginning of the 20th century, Syria was one of the most politically calm and firmly connected with Istanbul regions of the Ottoman Empire. This was greatly facilitated by a fairly high level of public safety, the development of foreign trade, the growth of education and the gradual integration of local elites (both Muslims and Christians) into Ottoman state and social mechanisms. Syrias position in the system of Ottoman possessions clearly showed that the process of weakening and territorial disintegration of the Ottoman Empire during the era of reform was not linear, and along with the loss of possessions and influence in the Balkans, in the Asian part of the empire during the 19th and early 20th centuries there was a parallel process of imperial consolidation.
