Response to selection in Australian Merino sheep. IV.* Reproduction rate in groups selected for high clean wool weight, with a ceiling on degree of skin wrinkle and either fibre diameter or crimp frequency

Reproduction rate (number of lambs weaned per ewe joined) and its components (proportion of ewes lambing, lambs born per ewe lambing, and lamb survival rate) are compared for 2-year-old and adult Australian Peppin Merino ewes in a random control group and two groups under selection since 1950 for high clean wool weight, with limits on high wrinkle score and either high fibre diameter or low crimp frequency. The conclusion is that there has been no correlated response in reproduction rate to selection for high clean wool weight. The difference between the selected and control groups was expressed as a percentage deviation from the control. These percentage deviations for all four characteristics fluctuated considerably and there was no consistent trend. Mean percentage deviations were calculated for ewes born in an initial period of years, soon after selection began, and a final period, at the end of the time for which data were available. Any difference between such means would indicate a selection response. For both 2-year-old and adult ewes in both selection groups, means of the percentage deviations in number of lambs weaned were negative and in most cases large during the initial period (–19.4 and –3.4 for 2-year-old and adult ewes in one group, –17.6 and –11.9 in the other), but smaller and sometimes positive in the final period (+ 4.6 and –3 30 in the first group, + 3.3 and –8.7 in the second). The main contributor to the low number of lambs weaned for 2-year-old ewes in the initial period was a low proportion of ewes lambing. For adult ewes, the number of lambs born per ewe lambing (twinning rate) was lower in the final compared with the initial period, but showed no signs of continuing to fall. The fall was compensated by an increase in lamb survival rate in the selected groups compared with the control, which was not due solely to the lower incidence of twins but was present when only single lambs were considered. Possible reasons for a lower incidence of twinning and a higher lamb survival rate are discussed. The conclusion that reproduction rate has shown no consistent change under selection for high clean wool weight would have been predicted from the zero genetic correlation between the two characteristics previously estimated in the same flock. Comparisons are made with the negative estimates of genetic correlation reported by other authors, and reasons for differences discussed. Although no negative correlated selection response has been found in these groups, it is recommended that reproduction rate should always be considered when selecting for high clean wool weight in commercial practice. __________________ *Part III, Aust. ABSTRACT Long-term selection for increased 12-day litter weight in two replicate lines (W2, W3) of mice resulted in an apparent selection limit at about 17 generations. Quadratic polynomial and exponential models were fitted to the data in order to estimate the plateaued response and half-life of the selection process. Using the polynomial results, the half-life estimates were 4.5 and 8.6 generations for W2 and W3, respectively. The plateaued responses were 5.1 and 5.8 g which, when expressed in phenotypic standard deviation units, became 1.1 and 1.3. The exponential model provides similar estimates. A negative association between 12-day litter weight and fitness was not considered to be an adequate explanation for the plateau since there was no decrease in fertility of the selected lines. Evidence that exhaustion of genetic variability was not the cause of the plateau came from the immediate response to reverse selection. It was proposed that the plateau may be due to a negative genetic correlation between direct and maternal genetic effects, which would be expected to occur after many generations of selection. There were positive correlated responses in both replicates for adult body weight, which was in agreement with the positive genetic correlation between preweaning and postweaning body weight. The expected positive correlated response for number born was realized in only one of the replicates.

Data on lamb survival and associated traits involving records from 15 192 lambs, 6308 dams and 284 sires from the Sheep CRC’s Information Nucleus were studied. Lamb survival to 3 days of age and to weaning was 85 and 80%, respectively, and heritability (±s.e.) was 0.014 ± 0.010 and 0.010 ± 0.010, respectively. Of the 14 traits recorded at birth, time taken for the lamb to bleat, rectal temperature and crown–rump length had the highest genetic correlations with lamb survival to weaning (–0.43 ± 0.32, 0.56 ± 0.33 and –0.38 ± 0.36, respectively). Under selection for a multi-trait objective including net reproduction rate (but not lamb survival), survival was predicted to decline genetically by 0.25 lambs weaned per 100 lambs born.year, although this was reversed to a gain of 0.20 lambs weaned per 100 lambs born.year by including the trait in the breeding objective and using 50 half-sib and 50 progeny records per selection candidate. Accuracy of selection for lamb survival was improved to 0.735 with a selection index of lamb survival to weaning, lamb ease, birth coat score, time taken to bleat, rectal temperature and crown–rump length, with the addition of 50 half-sibs and 50 progeny records per candidate. Our results suggest that unless actively incorporated into breeding objectives, lamb survival may genetically decline; however, gains are possible with direct selection using half-sib and progeny records. The addition of indirect selection criteria for lamb survival can further improve accuracy, up to 93.4%, but requires further investigation.

Significant response to selection for budbreak number (NB) based on data recorded on 1-year-old shoots of young apple (Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill var. domestica (Borkh.) Mansf.) seedlings (Expt. I) and branches from adult seedling trees (Expt. II) has been demonstrated in clonally propagated seedling trees. Between family variation for NB was low and masked by year × family interaction effects. Realized heritability for NB was estimated as 40% to 60%. Correlated response in uniformity and position of budbreak, and in the number and length of side shoots, was found. Association between the time of budbreak (TB) and NB, according to midparent and cross groupings, and according to the parental means, indicate a positive genetic correlation between these traits. Where data on adult trees were used as a measure of selection response and tested on young clonal trees, significant response and genetic variation was shown, confirming the presence of utilizable genetic variance and that this procedure may be successfully applied as an early screening method for increased budbreak in adult trees. Combined selection utilizing genetic variance between crosses as well as within crosses is proposed as the best procedure to increase the frequency of seedlings with increased budbreak and to improve adaptation to low winter chilling conditions.

Genetic parameters were estimated for wool characteristics of white and coloured Finnsheep. The data consisted of 5 309 lambs from ordinary production flocks, the Finnsheep nucleus flock and a breeding flock. The variance component estimation was done applying REML analyses. Wool traits included fleece uniformity, density, staple formation, lustre, crimp frequency, fineness grade and staple length. There was a smaller dataset that contained also lamb live weight, greasy fleece weight and additional fleece characteristics including fibre diameter measured with the OFDA method. The variance components for direct and maternal effects were estimated using bivariate analysis for 42-day, 120-day weight and greasy fleece weight. Heritability for visually assessed wool characteristics varied from 0.23 to 0.43 and for measured traits from 0.45 to 0.62. Staple length had a high negative genetic correlation with crimp frequency and fineness grade. Heritability of greasy fleece weight was high (0.55) and that of fibre diameter 0.62. The genetic correlation between crimp frequency and fibre diameter was negative (- 0.56). The results imply that the assessed traits are useful indicators for fleece quality and those of major importance can be introduced into the breeding programme. The results suggest that there is no antagonism in selection for both growth capacity and wool quantity.;

SUMMARYThe direct and correlated response to selection of scutellar microchaetae and scutellar bristles has been analysed by determining the contribution of the three major chromosomes, alone and in combination with each other, to the overall response. The results of the analysis confirm a previous finding, based on a formal statistical approach, that response to selection for microchaetae had highly pleiotropic effects on scutellar bristles. In lines selected, each for high and low microchaetae, genetic changes in the 2nd and 3rd chromosomes are pre-eminent and essentially equal. Inter-chromosomal interactions are of relatively minor importance in interpreting the response to selection for microchaetae but assume greater importance with respect to the correlated character. The results are discussed in terms of the genetic correlation between fitness and the character measured.

Data for male calves from the most recent 5 yr of a long-term (11 yr) selection experiment with beef Shorthorn cattle were analyzed to calculate the direct and correlated response of intensive selection for yearling weight on growth and carcass characteristics. Least squares estimates of line differences (select vs. control) for the final year indicated cumulative selection responses [Formula: see text] of 41.5 and 46.2 kg in yearling weight for the two herds. Associated with this selection response in the two herds were increases in birth weight (3.6 and 3.0 kg; [Formula: see text]) in weaning weight (16.2 and 7.8 kg; [Formula: see text] and NS) and daily gain from birth to 10 mo of age (104 and 118; [Formula: see text]). The indirect effects on carcass merit were higher percentage of bone (0.6 and 0.7; [Formula: see text]), and a reduced lean/bone ratio (−0.19 and −0.11; [Formula: see text] and NS). Other differences were not statistically meaningful. The heritabilities for growth characters calculated as son/sire regressions were: birth wt 0.30 ± 0.13; weaning wt 0.34 ± 0.22; yearling wt 0.47 ± 0.23; weaning wt/yearling 0.38 ± 0.21; and daily gain 0.22 ± 0.16. For the most important carcass merit measurements the heritabilities, calculated as half-sib correlations, were: % lean 0.03 ± 0.21; % bone 0.86 ± 0.29; % fat (ext.) 0.01 ± 0.21; % fat (int.) 0.19 ± 0.23; lean/bone 0.72 ± 0.28; and hindquarter wt/forequarter wt 0.24 ± 0.24.

SUMMARYThe effects of selection for increased or decreased body weight in mice, at 5 or 10 weeks of age, on the fibre number, fibre diameter and weight of the m. sternomastoideus and m. anterior tibialis muscles were studied. Unselected control mice were also included. Significant effects were detected in the case of each of the traits. However, the magnitude of any particular correlated response to selection varied between muscles and between selection ages in an unsystematic fashion. Most of the changes in muscle weight resulting from selection were attributable to positively correlated changes in fibre number but they were also accompanied by changes in fibre diameter in some cases.The correlated responses described indicate the difficulty of predicting how selection for body weight changes will influence cellular structure of any given muscle.Phenotypic correlations between muscle fibre number and diameter were essentially zero. The phenotypic correlations between muscle weight and fibre number and fibre diameter were positive.Sex had no effect on fibre number but had an effect on fibre diameter which depended on the particular muscle and the age of the animal.

Reproduction rate data (lambs born, lamb survival rate, and lamb body weight) are presented for purebred Merino and Corriedale ewes and their reciprocal crosses. The four breeds were born in each of two years (1961 and 1962) and mated in each of two years (1963 and 1964, 1964 and 1966) to Dorset Horn rams. Heterosis was estimated as the superiority of the mean of the crossbreds over the mean of the purebreds, expressed as a percentage of the latter. The heterotic effect for lambs born per ewe joined was 1.9 % in 2-year-old ewes and 5.3 % in adults, the corresponding figures for lamb survival being 3.5 and 1.4 % for single-born, 17.2 and 12.0% for twin-born lambs. For mean age-corrected lamb body weight, 2-year-old ewes showed a heterotic effect of 3.7 % and adult ewes 2.0 %, while for pounds of lamb weaned per ewe joined the figures were 11.3 and 10.2%. Although some heterosis was exhibited, the mean of the crossbreds seldom exceeded that of the superior parent (the Corriedale), and there were sometimes differences between the reciprocal crosses, the Corriedale x Merino cross being superior in performance to the other. The potential for exploiting this degree of heterosis in reproduction rate cannot be assessed until the corresponding wool data have been analysed. In reproduction rate, the Corriedale was superior to the Merino, but again a final conclusion about their merits must await results on wool data.

The goal of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and predict direct and correlated response to selection for lamb growth traits and ewe reproductive traits, based on single trait selection or combining multiple traits in an optimum index that targets total litter post-weaning weight in the first lambing as the main selection goal. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.04 to 0.19. Genetic correlations between growth and reproductive traits ranged from -0.24 to 0.15. The indirect response to selection for reproductive traits in later lambings, by selecting on first lambing performance, was 11 to 25% greater than direct selection. The response to indirect selection for composite reproductive traits, i.e. total weaning weight or total post-weaning weight, by selecting on individual lamb weaning weight or post-weaning weight was 1 to 69% greater than direct selection, but it was accompanied by a negative response on litter size. However, combining alternate growth and reproductive traits in optimum selection index resulted in correlated response of up to 96% greater than direct selection response for reproductive traits without a negative response on litter size. Therefore, multiple trait selection using an index of component traits was more effective than direct selection for a composite trait.

(Co)variance estimates for hogget liveweight, greasy fleece weight, clean fleece weight, clean yield, fibre diameter, and the coefficient of variation of fibre diameter were obtained for a Western Australian Merino resource flock. The flock encompassed 16 medium wool bloodlines and data were available for the period 1982–93. Direct additive genetic variances (h2) — expressed as a ratio of the total phenotypic variance within bloodlines — were estimated at 0.52 for hogget liveweight, 0.44 for greasy fleece weight, 0.42 for clean fleece weight, 0.63 for clean yield, 0.71 for fibre diameter, and 0.62 for coefficient of variation of fibre diameter. Maternal genetic variance estimates were significant (P < 0.05) only in hogget liveweight and fibre diameter, but components within bloodlines were low (0.05 for liveweight and 0.02 for fibre diameter). Direct within-bloodline genetic correlations of hogget liveweight as well as greasy and clean fleece weight with fibre diameter were positive (0.17, 0.31, and 0.31, respectively), suggesting that selection for bigger and heavier cutting sheep would generally lead to a broader fibre diameter. Liveweight was unrelated to clean yield and negatively related to coefficient of variation of fibre diameter (–0.17). Greasy fleece weight was negatively related to clean yield (–0.20). The genetic correlation of clean fleece weight with clean yield was positive (0.37). Wool quantity was, in general, positively related to coefficient of variation of fibre diameter, although the estimated genetic correlations were low (0.12 for greasy fleece weight and 0.07 for clean fleece weight). The genetic correlation between fibre diameter and coefficient of variation of fibre diameter was negative, and fairly low (–0.10). These results are discussed with reference to sheep breeding.
