Direct and maternal genetic (co)variances for hogget liveweight and fleece traits in Western Australian Merino sheep

(Co)variance estimates for hogget liveweight, greasy fleece weight, clean fleece weight, clean yield, fibre diameter, and the coefficient of variation of fibre diameter were obtained for a Western Australian Merino resource flock. The flock encompassed 16 medium wool bloodlines and data were available for the period 1982–93. Direct additive genetic variances (h2) — expressed as a ratio of the total phenotypic variance within bloodlines — were estimated at 0.52 for hogget liveweight, 0.44 for greasy fleece weight, 0.42 for clean fleece weight, 0.63 for clean yield, 0.71 for fibre diameter, and 0.62 for coefficient of variation of fibre diameter. Maternal genetic variance estimates were significant (P < 0.05) only in hogget liveweight and fibre diameter, but components within bloodlines were low (0.05 for liveweight and 0.02 for fibre diameter). Direct within-bloodline genetic correlations of hogget liveweight as well as greasy and clean fleece weight with fibre diameter were positive (0.17, 0.31, and 0.31, respectively), suggesting that selection for bigger and heavier cutting sheep would generally lead to a broader fibre diameter. Liveweight was unrelated to clean yield and negatively related to coefficient of variation of fibre diameter (–0.17). Greasy fleece weight was negatively related to clean yield (–0.20). The genetic correlation of clean fleece weight with clean yield was positive (0.37). Wool quantity was, in general, positively related to coefficient of variation of fibre diameter, although the estimated genetic correlations were low (0.12 for greasy fleece weight and 0.07 for clean fleece weight). The genetic correlation between fibre diameter and coefficient of variation of fibre diameter was negative, and fairly low (–0.10). These results are discussed with reference to sheep breeding.

Data from two-tooth rams and ewes representing seven Australian Merino studs were analysed to provide estimates of between-stud genetic variances and between-stud genetic correlations for 20 wool and body traits. The estimates were used to compare two methods of choosing foundation animals for a new stud: selection within one stud or selection within each of several studs. Where only one trait was considered in selection, and provided that accurate estimates of stud mean breeding values were available, selection from a single stud was superior, although there were some differences between traits in the degree of superiority. Where more than one trait was considered the conclusion depended on the relative magnitudes and signs of the between and within-stud genetic and phenotypic correlations. In the particular case of selection for high clean fleece weight and fine fibre diameter, a strong unfavourable between-stud genetic correlation shifted the emphasis more toward selection from several studs, but selection from a single stud was still superior when accurate estimates of stud mean breeding values for clean fleece weight were available. When response to subsequent selection, as well as immediate gain in choice of founders, was considered, the conclusions were reversed. For a single trait, selection from several studs was always superior in the long term (three or more generations), and also in the short term when accurate estimates of stud mean breeding values were not available.

(Co)variance estimates for weaning weight, yearling liveweight, clean fleece weight and fibre diameter at yearling age were obtained for Merino, Dohne Merino and South African Meat Merino flocks maintained on the same property. Direct additive genetic variances for weaning weight [expressed as a ratio of the total phenotypic variance (h2, direct heritability)] were estimated at 0.15 for Merinos, 0.21 for Dohne Merinos and 0.32 for South African Meat Merinos. Corresponding maternal variance ratios (m2, including direct maternal variance and permanent environmental maternal variance) were estimated at 0.15, 0.30 and 0.24, respectively. The correlation between direct and maternal variance ratios was high and negative in Dohne Merinos and South African Meat Merinos (–0.72 and –0.53, respectively). Direct heritability estimates for yearling liveweight were 0.30 for Merinos, 0.33 for Dohne Merinos and 0.45 for South African Meat Merinos. Corresponding maternal variance ratios were only significant in the latter 2 breeds, amounting to 0.13 in Dohne Merinos and 0.12 in South African Meat Merinos. For yearling clean fleece weight, h2 and m2 were estimated at 0.28 and 0.12, respectively, for both Merinos and Dohne Merinos. In the case of South African Meat Merinos, only the h2 estimate was significant, at 0.68. Maternal variance ratios for yearling fibre diameter were not significant in any of the breeds, while h2 ranged from 0.58 in Merinos to 0.75 in South African Meat Merinos. Selection progress for yearling traits seems likely in all breeds, depending on the breeding objectives being strived for.

A 6 year study is reported of Merino studs and strains (Peppin, Collinsville and Bungaree) in Western Australia. Wool and body traits of males and females were measured, with additional subjective traits assessed on females. The effects of strain, stud (within strain), birth year, dam age, birth rearing rank, weaning age and their interactions were estimated using least squares procedures. When tested against studs, strain differences were significant for fibre diameter (both sexes), clean wool yield and about half of the subjective traits (females) but for none of the liveweights. Stud and year effects were significant for all traits, as was their interaction for most traits. Some studs were more stable between years than others in both clean fleece weight and average fibre diameter. Of the remaining effects, birth rearing rank influenced the greatest number of traits, while dam age only affected yield in ewes and some early liveweights. Peppins produced wool 2.0-2.3 microns finer than Bungarees, but not significantly different from Collinsvilles. Peppins also had the best subjective wool scores, but had the highest wrinkle scores and scored poorly on other subjective body traits. Twin-born hoggets produced 0.05-0.15 kg less clean wool than their single-born contemporaries, and their fleeces were about 0.4 microns coarser with poorer subjective qualities. Twins were also lighter from birth (by 23%) up to 17 months (by 5%) in females. Late-born lambs had higher birth weights, but lower subsequent weights, persisting until 12 months in females.

Genetic parameters were estimated for wool characteristics of white and coloured Finnsheep. The data consisted of 5 309 lambs from ordinary production flocks, the Finnsheep nucleus flock and a breeding flock. The variance component estimation was done applying REML analyses. Wool traits included fleece uniformity, density, staple formation, lustre, crimp frequency, fineness grade and staple length. There was a smaller dataset that contained also lamb live weight, greasy fleece weight and additional fleece characteristics including fibre diameter measured with the OFDA method. The variance components for direct and maternal effects were estimated using bivariate analysis for 42-day, 120-day weight and greasy fleece weight. Heritability for visually assessed wool characteristics varied from 0.23 to 0.43 and for measured traits from 0.45 to 0.62. Staple length had a high negative genetic correlation with crimp frequency and fineness grade. Heritability of greasy fleece weight was high (0.55) and that of fibre diameter 0.62. The genetic correlation between crimp frequency and fibre diameter was negative (- 0.56). The results imply that the assessed traits are useful indicators for fleece quality and those of major importance can be introduced into the breeding programme. The results suggest that there is no antagonism in selection for both growth capacity and wool quantity.;

Results of selection for high clean wool weight per head with control of quality are reported for two selection groups over the period 1966–74. Results for the same experiment for the periods 1950–1959 and 1961–64 were reported earlier. Both groups were selected for high clean wool weight, one (S) with a ceiling on fibre diameter and degree of skin wrinkle, and the other (MS) with a lower limit on staple crimp frequency and a ceiling on skin wrinkle. Genetic progress in clean wool weight was greater in S than in MS over the 1966–74 period (0.12–0.15 lb/annum, compared with 0.06–0.09). This was to be expected from genetic correlations of clean wool weight with fibre diameter (low positive) and staple crimp frequency (high negative). The result supports the previous recommendation that staple crimp frequency is an inefficient way of controlling wool quality while attempting to improve quantity by selection, because its use severely restricts the likely progress in quantity. The actual rate of progress in the S group was similar to that in the period 1950–59, which was followed by a fall in superiority of the selected over the control group animals born during 1961–64. The recovery of response in the 1966–74 period negates the suggestion that the loss of response during the 1961-64 period was due to a 'plateau'. The most likely explanation is that a genotype x environment interaction occurred, such that the genetic gain made in the 1950-59 period could not be expressed in the poorer environments of 1960–65, but reappeared gradually under the improving environment of the 1966–74 period. Attempts to remove this interaction by regression of response on the mean clean wool weight of the unselected control group (as an index of the level of the environment) for each year, were not successful. Correlated responses to selection for high and low clean fleece weight (W) in the Peppin Merino (Fleece plus and Fleece minus flocks respectively) are presented together with estimates of realized genetic correlations where appropriate. There were strong positive correlations between W and greasy fleece weight and between W and clean scoured yield, and a strong negative correlation between Wand crimp frequency. There was no consistent association between W and body weight. Selection for W caused little change in wool colour, a slight improvement in wool character, and an improvement in wool handle in the rams, but not in the ewes. There was an increase in face cover score and a decrease in birthcoat score in the Fleece minus flock, but there was no change in either trait in the Fleece plus flock. Possible reasons for these asymmetries are discussed. Most of the response in W in the Fleece plus flock arose through increases in fibre density, fibre diameter and staple length. Staple length was the major component associated with response in W in the Fleece minus flock. Decreases also occurred in fibre density and wrinkle score but there was no change in fibre diameter. Continued response in W in the Fleece minus flock was through staple length and, to a lesser extent, wrinkle score. The response in fibre density in both flocks arose through change in the ratio of secondary to primary fibres. Two-year-old and lifetime reproductive performances are reported for the two selection flocks. The Fleece minus 2-year-old ewes weaned significantly more lambs than their Fleece plus counterparts over the period studied. The lifetime reproductive performance of ewes was similar in both flocks, although there were significantly more multiple births in the Fleece plus flock. An examination of the divergence between the two flocks revealed no significant time trends. Genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations were estimated between 23 quantitative and qualitative wool and body traits of South Australian Merino sheep. Clean fleece weight was significantly correlated genetically with greasy fleece weight (0.62), yield (0.47), staple length (0.41), crimps per inch (-0.34), secondary/primary follicle ratio (0.37) and skin thickness (0.39). No significant half-sib genetic correlation was found between clean fleece weight and fibre diameter and the dam-offspring correlation was quite low, although significant (0.16, P < 0.05). This indicates that selection for clean fleece weight should not lead to any great increase in fibre diameter. Skin thickness is discussed as a possible early indicator of clean fleece weight.

Genetic parameters for skin follicle traits, wool traits, body weight, and number of lambs weaned per ewe joined were estimated for 5108 10-month-old Australian fine-wool Merinos born between 1990 and 1996. These animals were descended from 261 sires and 2508 dams. The skin follicle number index that is based on skin surface area, and primary, secondary, or total follicle density were introduced as possible early-age selection criteria estimated at 6 months of age. Heritability estimates for total, secondary, and primary follicle number index were 0.45 ± 0.04, 0.46 ± 0.04, and 0.38 ± 0.04, respectively. The genetic correlations of total follicle number index with clean fleece weight, mean fibre diameter, staple strength, coefficient of variation of fibre diameter, body weight, and number of lambs weaned were 0.16, –0.67, 0.00, 0.03, 0.22, and 0.22, respectively. Responses to selection on indices including and excluding follicle traits were calculated based on the genetic parameters estimated, and with annual responses calculated using an optimised age structure. On average, 10% greater response was predicted when total follicle number index was used as an additional selection criterion in different micron premium scenarios. In comparison, skin follicle density had a smaller effect on genetic improvement. The extra response was ~1%. Similar index responses were obtained when total follicle number index was used as a replacement selection criterion for clean fleece weight, mean fibre diameter, and coefficient of variation of fibre diameter for breeding objectives with low emphasis on fibre diameter. In objectives with high emphasis on fibre diameter, unfavourable correlated responses in staple strength and CV of fibre diameter limited the effectiveness of using total follicle number index as a selection criterion. Although the use of total follicle number index as an additional selection criterion can be favourable for some breeding objectives, measuring this trait is currently cost prohibitive to inclusion in Merino breeding programs.

AbstractThe Baluchi breed is the most common native breed of Iran adapted to harsh environments in the eastern parts of the country. The data used in the present study, collected from two research flocks at the Abbasabad sheep breeding station in north-east Iran, included 20 534 animals descended from 363 sires, 5992 dams, 282 maternal grandsires, and 2865 maternal granddams during the period 1966 to 1989. The traits recorded were: birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), weight at 6 months (W6), weight at 12 months (YW), pre-weaning gain (WG), post-weaning gain (PWG), lamb fleece weight (LFW), ewe fleece weight sheared before first joining (FW1) and adult ewe fleece weight (FW). Genetic parameters, estimated with restricted maximum likelihood and a two-trait animal model, were similar in the two flocks. Direct heritabilities for the various body weight traits were moderate and varied between 0·13 and 0·32, while the maternal heritabilities were low and varied between 0·01 and 0·12. Direct and maternal genetic correlations between WW and weights at later ages were moderate to high (0·59 to 0·96). Direct heritabilities of weight gain measures varied between 0·12 and 0·19, while no significant maternal influence on either of these weight gain measures could be detected. The estimates of direct genetic correlation between WG and PWG were positive and varied between 0·54 and 0·74, while negative maternal genetic correlation (0·17 on average) between WG and PWG was detected. For LFW, direct heritability was low and no maternal heritability could be shown. For FW1, both direct and maternal genetic influences were demonstrated (0·07 to 0·26). Direct genetic correlation between LFW and FW1 was very low and close to zero, while maternal genetic correlation was positive and relatively high (0·72 on average). The relative contributions to phenotypic variance from variance components due to common environmental effects ranged from 0·01 to 0·15 for all traits. The repeatability of FW was low (0·03 to 0·12).

Genetic and phenotypic relationships among subjectively graded characteristics were examined in a flock of Merino sheep a t Trangie Agricultural Experiment Station. Estimates of heritability were: wool handle, 0.30; wool colour, 0.63; wool character, 0.38; back wool, 0.00; hocks, 0.14; face cover, 0.38. The genetic correlation between face cover and fleece weights suggested that selection for fleece weight would increase "wool-blindness", with possible diminution of reproductive efficiency. Selection for wools of good character (well-defined crimp) would improve softness and would not decrease fleece weight. The conclusion emerging from this and previous studies is that intense selection for high fleece weight will be rewarded by substantial increases, and will be offset only partly by adverse changes in a few of the several characters investigated.
