This ratio, which is of the order of 2-4 at birth, increases to about 13-18 by 30-40 days after birth and then increases slowly to the mature value of 18-24 over several months.

Four medium- and six strong-wool Merino sheep were exposed to continuous simulated rain (4'5 mm/h) for periods ranging from 3 to 9 days. In response, the sheep developed characteristics typical of fleece-rot lesions such as exudative encrustation' and bacterial discoloration of the fleece. Skin samples were taken periodically for histological examination from the trunk region of the sheep prior to, during, and after wetting.

Intravenous infusion of 4�5-4�7 mg of mouse epidermal growth factor (mEGF) into nine castrated male Merino sheep for 26 h resulted in complete casting of the fleeces 6-8 days later. The morphological changes which occurred in the skin were studied in skin samples taken before infusion and at intervals between 1 hand 42 days after the infusion had begun. Wool fibres from the shed fleeces were examined with the scanning electron microscope.

We aimed to quantify the number, type and arrangement of skin follicles in Huacaya and Suri alpaca skin and correlate their follicle characteristics with fibre traits of harvested fibre and compared these relationships with those of Merino sheep. Fibre and skin samples were collected from the mid-side of 12 Huacaya alpacas, 24 Suri alpacas and 10 Merino sheep. The mean fibre diameter (MFD ± s.e.) of the Huacaya and Suri were: 35.5 ± 0.9 and 28.3 ± 1.0 μm, respectively. The follicle groups found for alpacas were very different from the normal trio of primary follicles found in sheep and goats. The follicle group of the alpacas consisted of a single primary follicle surrounded by a variable number of secondary follicles. The mean ± s.e. primary follicle density was 3.1 ± 0.3 and 2.7 ± 0.1 follicles/mm2 for Huacaya and Suri, respectively. The mean ± s.e. secondary follicle density (SFD) was 13.7 ± 1.2 and 17.5 ± 0.6 follicles/mm2 for Huacaya and Suri, respectively. The mean ± s.e. ratio of secondary to primary follicles (S/P ratio) was 5.1 ± 0.5 for the Huacaya and 7.3 ± 0.2 for the Suri alpacas. The sheep had higher S/P ratios and SFD, lower MFD and produced significantly heavier fleeces. The key correlations found between traits in alpacas include a negative correlation between SFD and MFD (r = –0.71, P = 0.001) and a negative correlation between S/P ratio and MFD (r = –0.44, P = 0.003) and a positive correlation between S/P ratio and total follicle density (r = 0.38, P = 0.010). The study revealed that important relationships exist between alpaca skin follicle characteristics and fibre characteristics. It was the number of secondary follicles in a group that imparts density and a corresponding reduced MFD.

AbstractThe recent increase of the number of unidentified cadavers has become a serious problem throughout the world. As a simple and objective method for age estimation, we attempted to utilize Raman spectrometry for forensic identification. Raman spectroscopy is an optical-based vibrational spectroscopic technique that provides detailed information regarding a sample’s molecular composition and structures. Building upon our previous proof-of-concept study, we measured the Raman spectra of abdominal skin samples from 132 autopsy cases and the protein-folding intensity ratio, RPF, defined as the ratio between the Raman signals from a random coil an α-helix. There was a strong negative correlation between age and RPF with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.878. Four models, based on linear (RPF), squared (RPF2), sex, and RPF by sex interaction terms, were examined. The results of cross validation suggested that the second model including linear and squared terms was the best model with the lowest root mean squared error (11.3 years of age) and the highest coefficient of determination (0.743). Our results indicate that the there was a high correlation between the age and RPF and the Raman biological clock of protein folding can be used as a simple and objective forensic age estimation method for unidentified cadavers.

Background:Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE) is a disfiguring autoimmune skin disorder with several subtypes: discoid lupus, subacute cutaneous lupus, and acute cutaneous lupus. CLE is associated with defects in the adaptive immune system, and, at times, systemic involvement. The innate immune system is likely involved as seen in the presence of interface dermatitis, which is observed in viral exanthems, and improvement of CLE using inhibitors to membrane-bound Pattern Recognition Receptors.Objectives:Compare the expression of genes associated with the innate immune system in active CLE skin lesions of different subtypes compared to normal skin controls.Methods:Five datasets selected from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) were analyzed using GEO2R to compare the gene expressions between different subtypes of CLE. Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) database, Gene Card, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) Pathway analysis were used to identify the interaction and function of specific genes.Results:There were a total of 147 CLE skin samples and 52 normal controls. Genes associated with the Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain-Like Receptor (NLR) signaling pathway were upregulated in CLE skin samples (adjusted p-value < 0.001). Five genes associated with the NLR signaling pathway, STAT1, OAS1, OAS2, OAS3, and AIM2, were found to be upregulated in skin samples of CLE patients in all datasets, regardless of type, compared to normal controls in all datasets. These five genes are associated with transcription activation, regulation of viral infection, and interferon response.Conclusion:Genes associated with the NLR signaling pathway are upregulated in the skin lesions of CLE patients compared to normal controls, supporting the role of the innate immune system in CLE. Background. Unequal distribution of dermal collagen and elastic fibers in different orientations of skin is reported to be one of the multifocal causes of scar related complications. Present study is to understand the correlation pattern between collagen in horizontal (CH) and in vertical (CV) directions as well as that of elastic in horizontal (EH) and vertical (EV) directions.Materials and Method. A total of 320 skin samples were collected in two orientations from suprascapular, anterior chest, lateral chest, anterior abdominal wall, and inguinal regions of 32 human cadavers. Spearman correlation coefficient (r) was calculated between the variables (CH,CV,EH, andEV).Results. Significant positive correlation betweenCHandCV, and betweenEHandEVobserved in all 5 areas tested. A negative correlation betweenCVandEVat suprascapular, lateral chest, and inguinal regions and negative correlation betweenCHandEHat anterior chest and anterior abdominal wall have been identified.Conclusion. Knowledge of asymmetric content of dermal collagen and elastic fibers together with the varied strength and degree of association in the given area provides guidelines to the dermatologists and aesthetic surgeons in placing elective incisions in the direction maximally utilizing the anatomical facts for aesthetically pleasing result.

Wool production traits were measured on Merino hogget ewes in an unselected multiple-bloodline flock over a 7-year period at Trangie Agricultural Research Centre, N.S.W. The traits measured were greasy fleece weight (GFW), skirted fleece weight (SKFW), yield (Y), clean fleece weight (CFW), fibre diameter (FD), body weight (BWT) and staple length (SL). These measurements were used to examine genetic differences between and within flocks of Merino sheep, and to estimate heritability of and genetic and phenotypic correlations among these traits. Significant strain, flock within strain and flock effects were present for all traits. Interactions between these effects and year were non-significant. Within-flock genetic variance was always larger than between-flock within strain genetic variance for each trait. The influence of environmental effects on these traits was also examined. The environmental effects of birth-rearing type, age at observation and age of dam together accounted for about 7-10% of the total within-flock variation in fleece weights and body weight.After adjusting for significant environmental effects, paternal half-sib heritability estimates were 0.29 �. 0.06 for GFW, 0.22 � 0.05 for SKFW, 0.35 � 0.05 for Y, 0.30 �0.06 for CFW, 0.48 �0.07 for FD, 0.34 �. 0.06 for BWT and 0.44 �0.07 for SL. Estimates for genetic and phenotypic correlations were in agreement with published estimates except for the genetic correlation between CFW and FD (0.40 �. 0.11), and the genetic correlations involving BWT, which were essentially zero. The implications of the results of this study for the genetic improvement of Merino sheep for wool production are discussed.
