A comparison of the growth of Brahman and F1 Senepol × Brahman steers in an Indonesian feedlot

This study compares the performance of F1 Senepol × Brahman steers (F1 SEN) to Brahman (BRAH) steers in an Indonesian feedlot. The focus was to address concerns that crossbred cattle are discriminated against by live export cattle buyers due to a perception that they do not perform as well as Brahmans in Indonesian feedlots. F1 SEN (n = 54) and BRAH (n = 32) steers that had grazed together since weaning at Douglas Daly Research Farm (Northern Territory) were exported to Indonesia and fed for 121 days in a feedlot near Lampung (Sumatra, Indonesia). The average daily gain of the F1 SEN steers over the feeding period was 0.17 kg/day higher (P < 0.001) than the BRAH steers (1.71 vs 1.54 kg/day). As a result the F1 SEN put on an average of 21.6 kg more over the 121-day feeding period and they did not have a higher mortality rate. Consequently, F1 SEN steers performed better than BRAH in an Indonesian feedlot and these results should encourage live export cattle buyers to purchase this type of cattle (Brahman crossed with a tropically adapted Bos taurus breed) with confidence that they can perform at least as well as Brahmans in Indonesian feedlots, although it should be noted that growth rates are usually higher in F1 crosses than in subsequent generations.

Forty 3/4 Bos indicus × 1/4 Bos taurus bulls (initial bodyweight = 214 ± 4 kg; 11 ± 0.2 months) were used in the study. Four bulls were slaughtered as reference and the other 36 bulls were allowed ad libitum consumption of treatment diets following a completely randomised 3 × 3 factorial design. The design included three diet concentrations of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P): standard, 50% of standard, and 75% of standard and three periods of feedlot confinement: 8, 16, and 24 weeks with four bulls per treatment combination. The diets were isonitrogenous and consisted of 60 : 40 corn silage to concentrate. Dry matter intake, crude protein, ether extract, organic matter, non-fibrous carbohydrates, Ca, and P, expressed as kg/day, were greater (P < 0.05) for bulls confined for longer periods. Nutrient digestibility and average daily gain was not affected (P > 0.05) by Ca and P concentration of diet or by feedlot phase. Dressing were decreased (P < 0.05) for bulls that remained in confinement for a shorter period. The daily maintenance requirements of Ca and P were 13.66 and 21.51 mg/kg empty bodyweight, respectively, and the absorption coefficients of Ca and P were 0.70 and 0.67, respectively. We concluded that for crossbred cattle in the feedlot, dietary levels of Ca and P recommended by BR-CORTE (2010), NRC (2000), and AFRC (1991) could be reduced by 62%, 66%, and 57%, respectively, for Ca and by 14%, 15%, and 43%, respectively, for P with significant savings in costs. This study shows that Ca and P can be reduced to 1.8 and 2.2 g/kg DM respectively, in the diets for crossbred cattle in feedlot.

The performance of four year groups of Brahman and F1 Senepol × Brahman steers was compared grazing buffel pasture at the Douglas-Daly Research Farm, Douglas-Daly, NT, Australia. F1 Senepol × Brahman steers were on average 32 kg heavier at turnoff at ~18 months of age (P &lt; 0.001) as a result of higher average weaning weights (+19 kg, P &lt; 0.001) and higher growth during the post-weaning year (+12 kg, P &lt; 0.001). These results, combined with previous studies that found that F1 Senepol × Brahman steers had more tender meat and performed better than Brahman in an Indonesian feedlot, indicate that crossbreeding with a tropically adapted Bos taurus breed, such as Senepol, could be an effective way for north Australian cattle producers with Brahman herds to produce cattle that perform well under northern conditions, and are suited to both the live export and domestic markets.

Context The use of two feed additives, to maximise rumen fermentation, in finishing diets offered to feedlot cattle may positively impact performance. Aims This study, conducted at the São Paulo State University feedlot, Botucatu campus, Brazil, was designed to evaluate the effects of the combined use of monensin (MON; 30 mg/kg of dry matter; (DM)) and virginiamycin (VM; 25 mg/kg of DM) in high-concentrate diets during the adaptation and finishing periods on feedlot performance, carcass traits, feeding behaviour, blood gas profile, rumen morphometrics and apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients of Nellore cattle. Methods The experiment was designed as a completely randomised block, replicated six times (3 bulls/pen), in which 72 20 months of age yearling Nellore bulls (388.0 ± 31.1 kg) were fed in 24 pens for 90 days according to the treatments: (1) MON during the entire feeding period (T1), (2) MON + VM during adaptation and only VM during the finishing period (T2), (3) MON + VM during the entire feeding period (T3), and (4) VM during the adaptation and MON + VM during the finishing period (T4). The adaptation program consisted of ad libitum feeding of three diets over the adaptation period of 19 days with concentrate level increasing from 69% to 84% of diet DM. Key results Overall, bulls fed on T2 had a greater DM intake (P &lt; 0.01), final bodyweight (P = 0.04), average daily gain (P = 0.03), hot carcass weight (P &lt; 0.01), final Longissimus muscle area (P = 0.05), Longissimus muscle area daily gain (P = 0.01), improved carcass G:F (P &lt; 0.01) and increased dressing percentage (P &lt; 0.01). Similarly, bulls fed on T2 were faster to consume 1 kg of either DM (P &lt; 0.01) or neutral detergent fibre (P &lt; 0.01) after 60 days on feed. Furthermore, bulls fed on T2 presented a greater (P = 0.05) cell proliferation index in the rumen papillae. Conclusions According to the results, Nellore yearling bulls should be fed high-concentrate diets containing MON and VM during adaptation, and only VM during the finishing period to improve overall feedlot performance. Implications The use of both MON and VM proved to be helpful only during the adaptation period.

Context Studies assessing the relationship between cattle reactivity and growth performance, as well as suitability to the feedlot, in Zebu cattle are limited. Based on previous studies using Bos Taurus cattle, it is expected that reactivity measured at weaning could be used as a predictor of feedlot performance, and that cattle with greater flight speed (FS) would have reduced average daily gain (ADG). Aims The aims of this study were to (1) determine if FS (m/s) measured before entry into the feedlot could be used as a predictor of cattle performance, (2) evaluate the consistency of FS over time, and (3) determine when FS should be measured to best predict animal suitability to the feedlot. Methods A total of 54 Nellore and 40 Guzerat calves were assessed by using FS, which was collected at the time of (FS0) and 1 week after weaning (FS1), as well as on Day 28 (FS28), 56 (FS56) and 168 (FS168) after entry into the feedlot, and a FS average was calculated using FS28, FS56 and FS168 (FS28–168). Performance using ADG (kg/calf.day) was calculated for each animal over three periods: ADG1–28, ADG28–168 and ADG1–168. Bunk attendance (min/calf.day) was recorded over a 173-day feeding period. Key results The ADG28–168 was reduced by 0.14 kg/calf.day for each unit increase in FS0 (P &lt; 0.05). Both ADG28–168 and ADG1–168 were reduced by 0.02 kg/calf.day for each unit increase in FS1 (P ≤ 0.01), but neither FS0 nor FS1 was associated with ADG1–28 (P &gt; 0.10). A significant increase was observed between FS1 and FS28 (P &lt; 0.01), followed by a reduction in FS56 (P &lt; 0.01) and FS168 (P &lt; 0.01). Conclusion FS measured at or within 1 week of weaning has the potential to be used as an indicator of feedlot growth performance in Nellore and Guzerat cattle. Implications Although our results do not indicate the efficacy of FS as a predictor of early suitability of cattle to the feedlot, it does have the potential to support its recommendation as an indicator of overall feedlot growth performance in Nellore and Guzerat breeds.

Post-weaning growth, liveweight and body condition at slaughter were examined in 289 steers comprised of straightbred Hereford and first cross Brahman x Hereford, Simmental x Hereford and Friesian x Hereford. The steers were grown from weaning in seven environments throughout New South Wales. All steers were slaughtered when the average fat cover of the Herefords was in the range of 6-10 mm at the 12/13th rib. Brahman crossbreds were in similar body condition to Herefords at slaughter, which in turn were generally in better condition than both Simmental and Friesian crossbreds. Crossbred steers were heavier than Herefords at slaughter. Simmental crosses and Friesian crosses were 53 kg (12%) heavier on average over all environments, and Brahman crosses 41 kg (10%) and 83 kg (16%) heavier in inland and coastal environments respectively. Mean average daily gain (ADG) of the crossbred steers was always greater than that of the Hereford steers. There was a trend for ADG to be greater among the Brahman crosses earlier in the post-weaning period, but for the Simmental and Friesian crosses to grow faster later in the post-weaning period. Simmental crosses maintained a constant ADG advantage relative to Friesian crosses throughout the post-weaning period in environments where growth was favoured. Significant genotype x environment interactions occurred. Relative to Herefords, Simmental and Friesian crossbreds responded more to improved conditions, while Brahman crossbreds maintained a constant growth advantage regardless of environmental conditions. Bos taurus crosses grew faster than Brahman crosses, and Simmental crosses faster than Friesian crosses, only when environments were highly favourable.

The purpose of this research was to examine the potention of using resveratrol of grape seed meal to increase average daily gain. The material used in this research are 60 layer poultry of 0-60 days. Resveratrol of grape seed meal devided in several level were p0 = commercial feed withouth Resveratrol of grape seed meal, P1 = commercial feed +  0.012 % Resveratrol of grape seed meal, P2 = commercial +  0.018 % Resveratrol of grape seed meal, P3 = commercial feed + 0.024 % Resveratrol of grape seed meal. Layer poultry were allotted to four level treatments randomly into P0, P1, P2, P3. Three replications each. The variables observed was of increase average daily gain. Data were analyzed by using Completely Randomized Design, when there was significant effect it was followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. The result of this research showed that the use of resveratrol of grape seed meal doesn’t differ reality (P>0,05). But in the numeric showed P2 (12.85 ± 0.30) was better than all treatments p0 (12.27± 0.30), P1 (12.49 ± 0.08), p3 (12.71 ± 0.12).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of social relationships on the feed intake, eating behavior, and growth, upon exposure to a novel diet, in Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) heifers during pregnancy. Twenty-four pregnant Hanwoo heifers, averaging 438 ± 27.8 kg in weight, 21 months in age, and 194 ± 8.5 days in pregnancy, were involved in a two-month (eight weeks) experiment. The heifers were randomly assigned to either the single housing group (SG; one individual per pen, n = 12), or the paired housing group (PG; two individuals per pen, n = 12). All pens were of the same size (5 × 5 m) and provided with one feed bin, which automatically recorded the individual feed intake and eating behavior. As the experiment began, the diet of the heifers was switched from a total mixed ration (TMR; 250 g/kg ryegrass straw and 750 g/kg concentrate mix) to a forage-only diet (mixed hay cubes composed of 500 g/kg alfalfa, 250 g/kg timothy, and 250 g/kg blue grass hay). The heifers were fed ad libitum twice a day. The individual feed intake and eating behavior were recorded daily throughout the experiment, and body weights (BWs) were measured every four weeks before the morning feeding. PG animals visited the feed bin 22% less often than SG. PG, however, stayed 39% longer in the feed bin and consumed 40% more feed per visit, compared with SG. Consequently, PG heifers spent 23% more time in eating and had 16% more daily dry matter intake than SG during the experiment. Average daily gain during the experimental period tended to be greater in PG than in SG. When pregnant Hanwoo heifers encountered a novel diet, social relationships (i.e., presence of a pen-mate) enhanced their time spent eating and feed intake. Social interactions, even with an unfamiliar individual, may be helpful for pregnant Hanwoo heifers cope with a diet challenge compared to solitary situation.

The study evaluated the effect of a phytase supplement, produced by Aspergillus niger, on the performance of 72 growing-finishing pigs (28-101 kg). Chemical and physical parameters of the tibia and fibula bones were measured. The control diet (diet 1) was formulated to be adequate for pigs with respect to all nutrients, and diets 2 and 3 with respect to all other nutrients except total phosphorus (P). The P source of the control diet was dicalciumphosphate (dihydrate), while no inorganic P was added to diets 2 and 3. Diet 3 was supplemented with phytase, 720 U/kg feed. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là đánh giá khả năng sinh trưởng, thành phần thân thịt xẻ của 3 tổ hợp bò lai hướng thịt giữa bò cái nền Lai Brahman với các giống bò đực Charolais, Droughtmaster và Red Angus giai đoạn vỗ béo nuôi tại tỉnh Quảng Ngãi. Nghiên cứu thực hiện trên 18 bò lai (6 bò/tổ hợp lai) 18 tháng tuổi, thời gian nuôi 3 tháng. Kết thúc giai đoạn nuôi, 4 bò/tổ hợp lai được mổ để đánh giá năng suất thịt. Kết quả cho thấy, các tổ hợp bò lai Charolais × Lai Brahman, Droughmaster × Lai Brahman và bò Red Angus × Lai Brahman có khối lượng lúc 21 tháng tuổi lần lượt là 523,7; 465 và 484 kg/con, tăng khối lượng trung bình sau 3 tháng nuôi của 3 tổ hợp bò lai lần lượt là 1.282; 1.039 và 1.134 g/ngày. Khối lượng thịt xẻ (kg/con) và tỷ lệ thịt xẻ (% khối lượng giết mổ) tương ứng với các tổ hợp bò lai Charolais × Lai Brahman, Droughmaster × Lai Brahman và bò Red Angus × Lai Brahman lần lượt là 312,6; 275,6 và 295,5 kg và 60,6; 60,3 và 62,1%; Tỷ lệ thịt tinh của ba tổ hợp bò lai lần lượt tương ứng là 45,2%; 43,9% và 42,6%. After the fattening period, 4 most representative cattle per genotype were slaughtered to evaluate meat performance and carcass composition. The results showed that Charolais × Lai Brahman, Droughtmaster × Lai Brahman and Red Angus × Lai Brahman crossbred cattle had a body weight of 523.7, 465.0 and 484.3 kg at 21 months old, respectively, average daily gain in fattening period of 3 beef crossbred genotypes were 1282, 1039 and 1134 g/day, respectively. The carcass weight and percentage of Charolais × Lai Brahman, Droughmaster × Lai Brahman and Red Angus × Lai Brahman were 312.6, 275.6 and 295.5 kg and 60.6, 60.3 and 62.1%, respectively. The percentage of meat of three crossbreds was 45.2, 43.9 and 42.6% body weight, respectively. Charolais × Lai Brahman had the highest beef performance, then Red Angus × Lai Brahman, and last was . These results could be concluded that the three crossbreds should be raised in Quang Ngai and other localities with similar farming conditions.

Lambing percentage is the main contributor to higher profit on New Zealand sheep farms and has increased from 98% in 1960 to 124% in 2006. As ewe litter size increases so does the proportion of triplet-born lambs and consequently preweaning mortality rate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of birthweight (BWT) on survival in triplet-born lambs within and among litters. Data from a total of 594 triplet crossbreed lambs born to mixed-age ewes was analysed. For the statistical analysis, the lambs were allocated according to their BWT, and within the litter were then allocated to three BWT groups (light, medium and heavy). The following parameters were calculated: total litter BWT (TBWT), percentage of TBWT for each lamb (PBWT = BWT/TBWT), coefficient of variation for BWT within litter and lamb average daily gain from birth to weaning. The mortality rate for the light, medium and heavy lambs was 56, 40 and 28%, respectively, and consequently the lightest lamb in a litter was 3.2 times more likely to die than the heaviest lamb. In the light lamb group, as BWT increased mortality decreased (P = 0.006), for medium lambs BWT did not influence mortality (P = 0.88) and in the heavy group there was a trend of increased BWT associated with increased mortality (P = 0.10). The negative relationship between lamb mortality and PBWT was identical in the three BWT groups (P < 0.0001). The effect of BWT on lamb mortality became non-significant when PBWT was fitted in the same model. This means that, in triplet-born lambs, mortality is not influenced by the BWT of the lamb itself, but by the BWT of its littermates. It can be calculated that a 4-kg lamb has a 24% chance of surviving in a litter of 16 kg, a 60% chance in a litter of 12 kg and an 87% chance of surviving in a litter of 8 kg. It is concluded that reducing the variation in BWT within a litter, or specifically managing the lightest lamb at birth, will increase the competitive ability for survival of each lamb and, therefore, decrease overall mortality and further improve farm profitability.
