Optimisation of feed intake is a major aim of pasture and range management for ruminants and understanding what influences feeding behaviour may play an important role in satisfying this aim. An obstacle to such understanding is the fact that feeding is a two-state variable (eating or not eating, albeit with changes in rate of eating during meals), whereas the likely influencing factors are mostly continuous variables. These include gut-fill, concentrations and rates of utilisation of nutrients and metabolites, and changes in nutrient demand due to growth, reproduction and environment, both climatic and social. Catastrophe theory deals mathematically with situations in which an outcome is discontinuous (e.g. eating or not eating) and influencing variables (‘control’ variables in terms of catastrophe theory) are continuously variable (e.g. physiological and environmental factors affecting feeding). We discuss models of feeding and develop an approach in which the Type 2 catastrophe, illustrated by the bifurcation or cusp diagram, is adapted to use negative feedbacks and capacity to handle food and nutrients as the two controlling factors. Ease of prehension, as expressed by rate of eating, is modelled, as are pauses within, as well as between, meals. Quantification has not yet been attempted and the approach is presented to stimulate new thinking about the modelling and prediction of feeding behaviour and meal dynamics.

This paper presents a quantitative study in measuring the perception of Malaysian SME towards ecommerce as an innovation and factors affecting the adoption of it. It is concerned with initiatives that are intended to help SME in Malaysia to adopt E-commerce as an innovation. The research has two main emphases: First, it presents some preliminary findings on the perception of Malaysian SME towards E-commerce as an innovation; and the level of confidence towards E-commerce as an innovation. Second, it streamlines various initiatives by Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Small and Medium Industries Development Corporation (SMIDEC), BankNegara Malaysia and local governments in accelerating the acceptance of E-commerce by Malaysian SME. The study engaged 38 SME participants through a survey using a self-administered questionnaire. 32% of the surveyed SME are from the Type 1 Industry; comprising manufacturing, manufacturing related services, and agro-based services and about 68% are from Type 2 Industry comprising services, primary agriculture, and ICT. The self administered questionnaire consists of two sections. Section I contains demographic information and SME specification while Section II contains 37 items: 31 items utilised Likert Scales items ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5(strongly agree), and six items utilised defined interval scales. Rogers' attributes of innovations (2003): relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trial ability and observability were used in the construct of the research instrument. This research emphasizes on Rogers'framework, as it was found useful where the study sought to understand the diffusion and use of Ecommerce by Malaysian SME in the investigation. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse and present empirical data of the 38 SME. The results from the quantitative data provided information on addressing barriers to SME, and confirmed the characteristics of Rogers' adoption categories. The study shows that the instrument which was designed with seven constructs lacked internal consistency in two determinants: relative advantage and observability. Findings interpreted through Rogers' theory suggest that an action plan should include initiatives to help SME towards E-commerce as an innovation.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) via the national health insurance research database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. All patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (n = 47,353) in the NHIRD (2000–2012) were enrolled in the study. The case group consists of participants with diabetic ophthalmic complications; 1:1 matching by age (±1 year old), sex, and diagnosis year of diabetes was used to provide an index date for the control group that corresponded to the case group (n = 5550). Chi-square test for categorical variables and Student’s t-test for continuous variables were used. Conditional logistic regression was performed to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of DR. The total number of HCQ user was 99 patients (1.8%) in the case group and 93 patients (1.7%) in the control group. Patients with hypertension (aOR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.11–1.31) and hyperlipidemia (aOR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.52–1.79) significantly increased the risk of diabetic ophthalmic complications (p < 0.001). Conversely, the use of HCQ and the presence of rheumatoid diseases did not show any significance in increased risk of DR. HCQ prescription can improve systemic glycemic profile, but it does not decrease the risk of diabetic ophthalmic complications.

Abstract Objectives Hypoglycemia is the most common adverse effect of sulfonylureas (SUs) and a major concern when using these drugs. Transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) rs7903146 C>T polymorphism is an established and well characterized genetic marker of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) risk. The aim of the present study was to analyze the potential association of TCF7L2 rs7903146 C>T polymorphism with SU-induced hypoglycemia in a well characterized cohort of SU-treated patients previously genotyped for cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) and P450 oxidoreductase (POR). Methods The study group consisted of 176 SU-treated T2DM patients of whom 92 had experienced at least one drug-associated hypoglycemic event. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used for TCF7L2 rs7903146 genotyping. Results TCF7L2 rs7903146 C>T genotype and allele frequency did not differ between cases and controls (p=0.745 and 0.671, respectively). In logistic regression analysis adjusted for other factors affecting hypoglycemia, including CYP2C9 and POR genotypes, TCF7L2 rs7903146 C>T polymorphism did not increase the risk of hypoglycemia (OR=1.238, 95% C.I.=0.750–2.044, p=0.405). Conclusions TCF7L2 rs7903146 C>T polymorphism is not associated with SU-induced hypoglycemia. Identifying additional gene polymorphisms associated with SU-induced hypoglycemia is crucial for improving T2DM patient therapy with SUs.

SummaryTo combat the epidemic increase in Type-2-Diabetes (T2D), risk factors need to be identified. Diet, lifestyle and the gut microbiome are among the most important factors affecting metabolic health. We demonstrate in 1,976 subjects of a prospective population cohort that specific gut microbiota members show diurnal oscillations in their relative abundance and we identified 13 taxa with disrupted rhythmicity in T2D. Prediction models based on this signature classified T2D with an area under the curve of 73%. BMI as microbiota-independent risk marker further improved diagnostic classification of T2D. The validity of this arrhythmic risk signature to predict T2D was confirmed in 699 KORA subjects five years after initial sampling. Shotgun metagenomic analysis linked 26 pathways associated with xenobiotic, amino acid, fatty acid, and taurine metabolism to the diurnal oscillation of gut bacteria. In summary, we determined a cohort-specific risk pattern of arrhythmic taxa which significantly contributes to the classification and prediction of T2D, highlighting the importance of circadian rhythmicity of the microbiome in targeting metabolic human diseases.

The incidence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases has increased over the last decades and is an important cause of death worldwide. An upcoming ingredient on the nutraceutical market are anthocyanins, a flavonoid subgroup, abundant mostly in berries and fruits. Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between anthocyanin intake and improved cardiovascular risk, type 2 diabetes and myocardial infarct. Clinical studies using anthocyanins have shown a significant decrease in inflammation markers and oxidative stress, a beneficial effect on vascular function and hyperlipidemia by decreasing low-density lipoprotein and increasing high-density lipoprotein. They have also shown a potential effect on glucose homeostasis and cognitive decline. This review summarizes the effects of anthocyanins in in-vitro, animal and human studies to give an overview of their application in medical prevention or as a dietary supplement.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV-2, an emerging virus that utilizes host proteins ACE2 and TMPRSS2 as entry factors. Understanding the factors affecting the pattern and levels of expression of these genes is important for deeper understanding of SARS-CoV-2 tropism and pathogenesis. Here we explore the role of genetics and co-expression networks in regulating these genes in the airway, through the analysis of nasal airway transcriptome data from 695 children. We identify expression quantitative trait loci for both ACE2 and TMPRSS2, that vary in frequency across world populations. We find TMPRSS2 is part of a mucus secretory network, highly upregulated by type 2 (T2) inflammation through the action of interleukin-13, and that the interferon response to respiratory viruses highly upregulates ACE2 expression. IL-13 and virus infection mediated effects on ACE2 expression were also observed at the protein level in the airway epithelium. Finally, we define airway responses to common coronavirus infections in children, finding that these infections generate host responses similar to other viral species, including upregulation of IL6 and ACE2. Our results reveal possible mechanisms influencing SARS-CoV-2 infectivity and COVID-19 clinical outcomes.
