How French shepherds create meal sequences to stimulate intake and optimise use of forage diversity on rangeland

European rangelands have rugged terrain with highly diverse patchworks of vegetation communities. They are mostly public lands that were abandoned for more than 50 years, because they served no purpose at the time of animal husbandry modernisation. The European Union’s policy now promotes the reintroduction of grazing on rangelands to prevent wildfires and to restore habitats for biodiversity conservation. Facing the lack of knowledge to implement such a policy, researchers, nature managers, and pastoral advisors began working closely with shepherds and goat herders in France, who had persisted in using rangelands. The research presented here is part of this collective effort to understand and assess the experiential knowledge and feeding practices that herders use for livestock. The study required in situ and simultaneous recording of several types of information at different levels of organisation – herder, herd, individual animal – using methods from scientific disciplines ranging from ethnology to animal behavioural ecology and landscape ecology. The results for herded animals were surprising; they had daily intake levels often twice those observed in controlled studies with forages of similar nutritive values. The reason became clear when we learned that herders use grazing circuits that sequence a meal into a succession of contrasting and complementary grazing ‘sectors’ that boost appetite and intake. Our modelling of this practice in MENU, a model conceived and developed with experienced herders, shows how a herder can use understanding of complementarities among sectors to sequence meals that increase appetite and intake and ensure renewal of resources at the landscape level, or conversely, to apply more intensive grazing impact on particular target sectors.

A powerful micro SIMS technique coupled to a computer driven acquisition system has allowed the simultaneous recording of C−, MoO−, and Si− images of the sample surfaces, or of the transverse cross sections of the Mo-diamond interface. Diamond deposition has been shown to take place on a Mo2C layer, and the influence on the nucleation process of Si contamination, coming from the quartz tube etched by H atoms, has been investigated. Contamination can in fact occur during the shutdown procedures or during the whole experiment. This last contamination can be avoided by using suitable pressure ranges or gas combinations. Moreover, the deposition time necessary to obtain well-crystallized diamond films and the nucleation density could be optimized by an in situ pretreatment stage. This treatment reduces the delay observed before nucleation (which would correspond to the carbide formation), and increases the carbon activity at the sample surface.

Humans and animals must evaluate the costs and expected benefits of their actions to make adaptive choices. Prior studies have demonstrated the involvement of the basal ganglia in this evaluation. However, little is known about the role of the external part of the globus pallidus (GPe), which is well positioned to integrate motor and reward-related information, in this process. To investigate this role, the activity of 126 neurons was recorded in the associative and limbic parts of the GPe of two monkeys performing a behavioral task in which different levels of force were required to obtain different amounts of liquid reward. The results first revealed that the activity of associative and limbic GPe neurons could be modulated not only by cognitive and limbic but also motor information at the same time, both during a single period or during different periods throughout the trial, mainly in an independent way. Moreover, as a population, GPe neurons encoded these types of information dynamically throughout the trial, when each piece of information was the most relevant for the achievement of the action. Taken together, these results suggest that GPe neurons could be dedicated to the parallel monitoring of task parameters essential to adjusting and maintaining goal-directed behavior.

Construction and rehabilitation of highways, tunnels, and bridges require detailed information about subsurface stratigraphy. This study presents development of a new method for characterizing subsurface soil in situ using computer vision. Hardware and software systems are integrated to obtain the grain-size distribution (GSD) of subsurface soils continuously with depth and to identify small-scale subsurface anomalies. Research is being conducted in three phases. The first phase consists of measuring the GSD of detached cohesionless soil specimens in the laboratory from digital images obtained with a computer vision system (CVS). The second phase uses the CVS to develop image processing and analysis techniques to classify soil assemblies in the laboratory and identify subsurface anomalies by simulating the manner in which images will be acquired in situ. A texture analysis approach has been developed that can detect changes in stratigraphy. The technique has been successful in identifying different types of dry, uniformly graded soils. Finally, a subsurface vision probe is being designed and constructed that will capture video images at three different levels of magnification continuously with depth.

We investigated the relationships among maximal O2 uptake (VO2max), effluent venous PO2 (PvO2), and calculated mean capillary PO2 (PCO2) in isolated dog gastrocnemius in situ as arterial PO2 (PaO2) was progressively reduced with muscle blood flow held constant. The hypothesis that VO2max is determined in part by peripheral tissue O2 diffusion predicts proportional declines in VO2max and PCO2 if the diffusing capacity of the muscle remains constant. The inspired O2 fraction was altered in each of six dogs to produce four different levels of PaO2 [22 +/- 2, 29 +/- 1, 38 +/- 1, and 79 +/- 4 (SE) Torr]. Muscle blood flow, with the circulation isolated, was held constant at 122 +/- 15 ml.100 g-1.min-1 while the muscle worked maximally (isometric twitches at 5-7 Hz) at each of the four different values of PaO2. Arterial and venous samples were taken to measure lactate, pH, PO2, PCO2, and muscle VO2. PCO2 was calculated using Fick's law of diffusion and a Bohr integration procedure. VO2max fell progressively (P less than 0.01) with decreasing PaO2. The decline in VO2max was proportional (R = 0.99) to the fall in both muscle PvO2 and calculated PCO2 while the calculated muscle diffusing capacity was not different among the four conditions. Fatigue developed more rapidly with lower PaO2, although lactate output from the muscle was not different among conditions. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that resistance to O2 diffusion in the peripheral tissue may be a principal determinant of VO2max.

AbstractOpen peer review (OPR), where review reports and reviewers’ identities are published alongside the articles, represents one of the last aspects of the open science movement to be widely embraced, although its adoption has been growing since the turn of the century. This study provides the first comprehensive investigation of OPR adoption, its early adopters and the implementation approaches used. Current bibliographic databases do not systematically index OPR journals, nor do the OPR journals clearly state their policies on open identities and open reports. Using various methods, we identified 617 OPR journals that published at least one article with open identities or open reports as of 2019 and analyzed their wide-ranging implementations to derive emerging OPR practices. The findings suggest that: (1) there has been a steady growth in OPR adoption since 2001, when 38 journals initially adopted OPR, with more rapid growth since 2017; (2) OPR adoption is most prevalent in medical and scientific disciplines (79.9%); (3) five publishers are responsible for 81% of the identified OPR journals; (4) early adopter publishers have implemented OPR in different ways, resulting in different levels of transparency. Across the variations in OPR implementations, two important factors define the degree of transparency: open identities and open reports. Open identities may include reviewer names and affiliation as well as credentials; open reports may include timestamped review histories consisting of referee reports and author rebuttals or a letter from the editor integrating reviewers’ comments. When and where open reports can be accessed are also important factors indicating the OPR transparency level. Publishers of optional OPR journals should add metric data in their annual status reports.

We need to improve our understanding of the factors that are important for the control of food intake on high bulk foods. The study of short term feeding behaviour (STFB) may help to do this. The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of giving foods differing in bulk content on the STFB of growing pigs. It was expected that the foods would result in different levels of daily intake and that this would be reflected as differences in STFB between the foods. Two hypotheses were developed based on ideas about the way in which a physical constraint to intake could arise. H1; there would be less diurnal variation in feeding on high bulk foods that limit intake. H2; feeding patterns on bulky foods would be less flexible than those on a control food when feeding time is limited by reducing time of access to the feeder.
