Commercial volumes of hydrocarbons have been discovered in Early Cretaceous synrift sediments of the Crayfish Group of the Penola Trough, western Otway Basin. Four other such depocentres are recognised using available seismic and drilling data. A standard nomenclature is proposed for the major structural elements observed in this part of the Otway Basin.Various tectonic models proposed for the Early Cretaceous rift history of the Otway Basin are reviewed and tested using true dip analysis of seismic events and sandbox modelling experiments. Results support a generally north-south direction for rift extension in the Tithonian-Barremian. This implies that the ENE trending Robe Trough is the headwall rift compartment (although with 20°obliquity), whereas the NW trending Penola Trough is a more oblique or transtensional rift compartment.

Paper presents description of Balakhninsky and Rassohinsky swells, which were located in the central part of the Yenisei-Khatanga Basin by seismic and drilling data, and the results of its geological structure comparative analysis. History of swells formation discussed in de- tails, including rift initiation in the Late Permian-Early Triassic time and stages of inversion structures growth intensification in the Middle Triassic, Late Jurassic, Early Cretaceous and Cenozoic time. Asynchronous development of these structures established on the base of paleoreconstruction analysis.

The present contribution describes the method of work, the types of source materia] used, and the historio- graphical and historico-eismic tradition of Armenia. The catalogue' s territorial frame of reference is that of socalled historical Armenia (which included part of present Eastern Turkey, and part of present Azerbaijan). The sources belong to different languages and cultures: Armenian, Syriac, Greek, Arab, Persian and Georgian. A comparison of the local sources with those belonging to other cultures enab]es the historical and seismological I"adition of the Mediterl'anean to be "linked" with that of the Iranian p]ateau, traditionally considered as two separate areas. We analyzed historical events listed in the most recent catalogues of earthquakes in the Armenian area compiled by Kondorskaya and Shebalin (1982) and Karapetian (1991). Important and valuable though these catalogues are, they are in need of revision. We found evidence for six hitherto unrecorded seismic events. Numerous errors of dating and location have been corrected, and several new localities and seismic effects have been evidenced. Each modification of the previous catalogues has been documented on the hasis of the historiographical and literary sources and the data from the written sources have been linked with those concerning the history of Armenian cities and architecture (monasteries, churches, episcopal complexes). On the whole. the revised earthquakes seem underestimated in the previous catalogues. The aim of this catalogue is to make a contribution to the knowledge of historical seismicity in Armenia, and at the same time to underline the specific nature of the Armenian case, thus avoiding a procedure which has generally tended to place this area in a marginal position, within the wider field of other research on historical earthquakes.

Abstract In the western part of the Castellane tectonic arc, the so-called “ Provence platform area “, corresponding to the foreland of the Alpine nappes (figs. 1–2), is marked by Tithonian-Berriasian shallow water carbonates capped by hemipelagic sediments deposited from the Valanginian up to the Aptian-Albian. A detailed biostratigraphic study of the Berriasian succession, based on calcareous algae and foraminifera, allows us to distinguish a Lower to Middle Berriasian, with Clypeina sulcata, Clypeina isabellae and Holosporella sarda, from an Upper Berriasian with Pfenderina neocomiensis, Danubiella cernavodensis, Falsolikanella campanensis and Macroporella praturloni (fig. 3). We performed a field survey of 30 sites located from Quinson to the west, and Escragnolles to the east (figs. 4–5) including the study of measured stratigraphic sections and the collection of samples for biostratigraphic interpretations. These stratigraphic investigations show that below the Valanginian beds, the Berriasian platfom carbonate succession, is locally incomplete, i.e. Upper Berriasian beds are frequently absent. During the Early and Middle Berriasian, depositional environments are marked by a strong bathymetric instability, with frequent subaerial exposure events, and a significant marine restriction; by contrast, during the Late Berriasian, the overall biological diversity increases and water agitation as well, which means a significant marine opening towards the basin. The Upper Berriasian hiatus is consequently regarded as the result of a Berriasian/Valanginian and/or a lowermost Valanginian erosion (fig. 6). The spatial distribution of complete or truncated Berriasian successions identifies east-west bands, in each band truncated series are located northward and complete series are located southward. Bands are limited by thrust or strip faults interpreted as palaeofaults reactivated during the Alpine orogeny (fig. 7). These fault-bounded blocks, 3 to 10 km in width, known as the Aiguine, La Palud-sur-Verdon, Carajuan-Audibergue and Peyroulles-La Foux blocks, are southerly rotated by 1 to 2o. We regard this structural architecture as the result of basinward tilting of blocks. Due to their rotation, the uplifted parts were eroded whereas the depressed parts were protected against erosion (fig. 8). Such a dynamic behavior reflects a distensive tectonic regime, which has been active at least during the Valanginian, that is after the drowning of the North-Provence carbonate platform. These structural events are considered as the regional expression of the Neocimmerian tectonic phase coupled with an enhancement of the Atlantic rifting. The orientation of the major Alpine structural elements (folds and faults) of the Castellane arc, is mostly inherited from these early Cretaceous tectonic events.

FROM the viewpoint of the pediatric psychiatrist, the problems of obesity, as seen clinically, can be thought of as having three layers. The first is constitutional, better described as physiologic, which may be broken down into genetic and structural elements. The second is psychologic, consisting of the values that food intake or the obesity itself come to have. The third layer is made of the cultural and social reactions to food and fat. These attitudes encountered inside and outside the home intermesh in their effects with the physiologic and psychologic levels. These, in turn, are also interwoven, until one cannot separate one layer from the other. However, when individual cases are scrutinized they reveal the pathology at one layer or the other to predominate and indicate where efforts to modify the abnormality might best be directed. Incidentally, the same levels operate on the other side of the coin, anorexia. From the practical point of view, let us consider the natural history of obesity and the clinical varieties one sees in practice, and let us see how the three-layer concept fits. First, as pointed out by Gordon, there is a tendency to be complacent or even pleased with obese infants. At level one, the physiologic, such constitutional factors as those present in the neonate born with an excessive quantity of pepsinogen secreted by the gastric mucous membrane could have the effect of producing as Mirsky points out, a relatively intense or even continuous hunger, and make greater demands on its mother for nursing.

Synopsis Insect wings are living, flexible structures composed of tubular veins and thin wing membrane. Wing veins can contain hemolymph (insect blood), tracheae, and nerves. Continuous flow of hemolymph within insect wings ensures that sensory hairs, structural elements such as resilin, and other living tissue within the wings remain functional. While it is well known that hemolymph circulates through insect wings, the extent of wing circulation (e.g., whether flow is present in every vein, and whether it is confined to the veins alone) is not well understood, especially for wings with complex wing venation. Over the last 100 years, scientists have developed experimental methods including microscopy, fluorescence, and thermography to observe flow in the wings. Recognizing and evaluating the importance of hemolymph movement in insect wings is critical in evaluating how the wings function both as flight appendages, as active sensors, and as thermoregulatory organs. In this review, we discuss the history of circulation in wings, past and present experimental techniques for measuring hemolymph, and broad implications for the field of hemodynamics in insect wings.

ABSTRACT This article explores the definition of ‘sportswoman’ as put forward in the Caster Semenya case (2019) and the Dutee Chand case (2015) before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). It analyses the structural and discursive factors that made it possible for the CAS to endorse a definition that reduces sex and gender to a matter concerning testosterone. By relying on the concept of intersectionality and analytical sensibilities from Critical Legal Studies, the article shows that framing the cases as a matter of scientific dispute, instead of as concerning human rights, significantly influenced the CAS decisions. Moreover, structural elements of international sports law, such as the lack of knowledge of human rights among CAS arbitrators and a history of institutionalising gendered and racialised body norms through sporting regulations, further aided the affirmation of the ‘testosterone rules’.

The Penola Trough is an elongate, Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous, NW-SE trending half graben filled mainly with synrift sediments of the Crayfish Group. Katnook-1 discovered gas in the basal Eumeralla Formation, but all commercial discoveries have been within the Crayfish Group, particularly the Pretty Hill Formation. Recent improvements in seismic data quality, in conjunction with additional well control, have greatly improved the understanding of the stratigraphy, structure and hydrocarbon prospectivity of the trough. Strati-graphic units within the Pretty Hill Formation are now mappable seismically. The maturity of potential source rocks within these deeper units has been modelled, and the distribution and quality of potential reservoir sands at several levels within the Crayfish Group have been studied using both well and seismic data. Evaluation of the structural history of the trough, the risk of a late carbon dioxide charge to traps, the direct detection of gas using seismic AVO analysis, and the petrophysical ambiguities recorded in wells has resulted in new insights. An important new play has been recognised on the northern flank of the Penola Trough: a gas and oil charge from mature source rocks directly overlying basement into a quartzose sand sequence referred to informally as the Sawpit Sandstone. This play was successfully tested in early 1994 by Wynn-1 which flowed both oil and gas during testing from the Sawpit Sandstone. In mid 1994, Haselgrove-1 discovered commercial quantities of gas in a tilted Pretty Hill Formation fault block adjacent to the Katnook Field. These recent discoveries enhance the prospectivity of the Penola Trough and of the Early Cretaceous sequence in the wider Otway Basin where these sediments are within reach of the drill.

The tectonic history of the northern flank of the offshore Gippsland Basin can be divided into three phases:an Early Cretaceous rift phase (120-98 Ma) with deposition of the Strzelecki Group and extension in a northeast-southwest direction.a mid-Cretaceous phase (98-80 Ma) with deposition of the Golden Beach Group and extension in a northwest- southeast direction anda Late Cretaceous to Tertiary sag phase with intermittent compression or wrenching.Previous workers have described the first and third phases. This paper argues for a distinctive second phase with extension at right angles to the first phase. The complex Cretaceous structure in the Kipper-Hammerhead area is interpreted in terms of a model in which transfer faults of the first phase became domino faults of the second phase.

This article explores multiple dimensions of stereotyping Mappila Muslim masculinities in the south Indian state of Kerala, as abject and demonized other. I begin with a survey of the British colonial construction of Mappila masculinity as, for example, militant religious fanatic, against the historical background of encounters between the two. It follows an examination of the new ways of reproducing these constructs in a changed yet hegemonic narrative public domain of the contemporary where Hindu majoritarian nationalism gathers its momentum. In so doing, this article also scrutinizes the larger mythological and structural elements of the contemporary refiguring. Drawing from these historical and contemporary trajectories, I argue that abjectification of Muslim masculinities is one of the basic ingredients of Islamophobia at work, often in banal forms.
