In order to study the surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BMA) with sodium 1-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropane sulfonate (COPS-I) and the resulting optical properties, a series of experiments was carried out at various reaction conditions such as the changes of BMA concentration, COPS-I concentration, BMA concentration under a fixed COPS-I amount, initiator and divinyl benzene (DVB) concentration. All the latices showed highly monodispersed spherical particles in the size range of 144∼435 nm and the respective shiny structural colors from their colloidal photonic crystals. It is found that the changes in such polymerization factors greatly affect the number of particles and particle diameter, polymerization rate, molecular weight, zeta-potential, and refractive indices. The increase of number of particles led to the increased rate of polymerization and zeta-potential of the latices, on the other hand, to the decreased molecular weight. Refractive indices and the reflectivity increased with COPS-I concentration, on the other hand, and decreased with DVB concentration. Especially, refractive indices of the resulting poly[BMA-co-(COPS-I)] colloidal photonic crystals showed much higher values of 1.65∼2.21 than that of polystyrene, due to the formation of core–shell shaped morphology. Monodisperse and high refractive index of poly[BMA-co-(COPS-I)] particles prepared in this work could be used for the study in photonic crystals and electrophoretic display.

We consider a photonic crystal formed by a periodic array of voids in an optically dense homogeneous substance as shown in Fig. 1. The electromagnetic (EM) spectrum of a photonic crystal with a given geometry is determined by the refractive indices of its constitutive components.

Abstract An optical comparator is an important logic circuit used in digital designs. Photonic crystals are among the platforms for implementing different kinds of gates and logic circuits. Photonic crystals are structures with alternating refractive indices. In digital optics, logical values “0” and “1” are defined based on the level of optical power. In this paper, an optical comparator based on square-lattice photonic crystals is designed and simulated. In the design of this comparator, a small-sized structure is used. The simulation results show that in the proposed comparator, there is a long distance between logical values ​​“0” and “1”. Due to the small size of this comparator and the adequate distance between logical values ​​“0” and “1”, this structure suits photonic integrated circuits with high accuracy.

A photonic crystal is a periodically structured composite material, with a unit cell whose dimensions are of the order of an optical wavelength, made from constituents whose refractive indices differ greatly (Δn is of the order of 2). Three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals typically consist of interpenetrating networks of dielectric material and air. Holographic lithography is a technology for the fabrication of photonic crystals in which the initial step is to define the 3D microstructure by interference of coherent light in a photosensitive precursor.

Transmissions of one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals (PCs) containing multiple quantum wells with Gaussian-distributed refractive indices are calculated with the use of the transfer-matrix method. The transmission spectrum of this kind of structures exhibits flatted pass-bands. The resonant peaks in the transmission spectrum of the conventional 1D PCs have been significantly suppressed. It is expected that this kind of structures may favor the fabrication of optical filters in applications to micro-optical devices.
