Methane is activated at ambient conditions in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor packed with Pd/γ-alumina catalyst containing different loadings of Pd (0.5, 1, 5 wt%). Results indicate that the presence of Pd on γ-alumina substantially abates the formation of deposits, leads to a notable increase in the production of alkanes and olefins and additionally improves the energy efficiency compared to those obtained for the non-packed reactor and the bare γ-alumina packed reactor. A low amount of Pd (0.5 and 1 wt%) favors achieving a higher production of olefins (mainly C2H4 and C3H6) and a higher yield of H2. Increasing Pd loading to 5 wt% promotes the interaction of H2 and olefins, which consequently intensifies the successive hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds, thus incurring a higher production of alkanes (mainly C2H6 and C3H8). The substantial abatement of the deposits is ascribed to the role of Palladium in moderating the strength of the electric and shifting the reaction pathways, in the way that hydrogenation reactions of deposits’ precursors become faster than their deposition on the catalyst.

Commercial micro/mesoporous activated carbons were utilized as metal-free catalysts for the desulfurization of a model fuel, i.e. 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) in hexadecane, under ambient conditions. Oxidation of carbons led to a further catalytic improvement.

For the better part of the past 20 years composite materials have been used to repair damaged piping and pressurized components in plants, refineries, and pipelines. The use of composite materials has been accompanied by comprehensive research programs focused on the development and assessment of using composite technology for restoring integrity to damaged piping and pressurized components. Of particular interest are composite repair standards such as ISO 24817 and ASME PCC-2 that provide technical guidance in how to properly design composite repair systems. The vast body of research completed to date has involved assessments at ambient conditions; however, at the present time there is significant interest in evaluating the performance of composite repair materials at elevated temperatures. This paper is focused on the topic of high temperature composite repairs and addresses the critical role of utilizing temperature-based mechanical properties to establish a composite repair design. The backbone of this effort is the development of composite performance curves that correlate change in strength as a function of temperature. A discussion on supporting full-scale pressure test results are included, along with guidance for users in how to properly design composite repair systems for applications at elevated temperatures.

Six reinforced concrete beams were loaded incrementally up to failure. After each increment the load was removed and measurements of the modal properties of the beams were made by impulse testing. The variation of the natural frequencies, frequency ratios, mode shapes, and the level of damage were investigated. It was found that on completion of the tests the natural frequencies of the beams had been reduced by an average of 25 percent in each mode. However, changes in mode shape were very small, and appreciable differences were only observed when the damage was highly localized. Modeling of the beam by using finite elements predicted trends that compared well with experimental observations. It is concluded that if dynamic testing were used in monitoring reinforced concrete structures, then the changes in frequency due to initial concrete cracking or yield of the reinforcement could be detected. More useful information associated with the spread and type of cracking through a structure may be detectable, although the level of the frequency changes is of the same order as those due to changes in ambient conditions.

The tribological performance of 5xxx series aluminum alloys with ternary zirconium is evaluated at ambient conditions under dry, wet and saline environment. The experiment has been done using a Pin-on-Disk apparatus under an applied load of 20N. The sliding distances varies ranging from 116m-2772m at a sliding velocity of 0.385 ms-1. The results show that presence of Mg and Zr into this alloy helps to increase their strength and wear resistance under dry sliding condition. But they significantly suffer under wet and corrosive environment due to formation of β-phase Al3Mg2, to slip bands and grain boundaries which may lead to and stress-corrosion cracking. The variation of friction coefficient is observed in wet and corrosive environment due to the formation of oxidation film, lubrication, and corrosion action in solution. The SEM fracture surface shows that brittle Al3Mg2 phase initiate the brittle fracture surface for Al-Mg alloy and Zr addition accelerate the brittleness of the alloy owing the fine precipitates of Al3Zr.
