This study aimed to explore chemistry pre-service teacher view toward implementation of contextual learning in Organic Chemistry. The context that was investigated about is Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), which was a novel display technology that is being used for smartphone display. Seventeen pre-service chemistry teachers were interviewed about their knowledge about organic chemistry, conjugated double bond, OLEDs and their view about implementing OLEDs context in organic chemistry learning. Three groups of questions were asked to the pre-service chemistry teacher, most of them indicating lack knowledge about detail information of OLEDs even though they really appreciate if OLEDs was introduced in Organic Chemistry learning especially in conjugated double bond and nature-generated organic compound topics.

AbstractThis study aimed to develop a Damdam Ji Chemistry learning media on colloidal material. This research is Research & Development (R&D) which used the 4D development model (Define, Design, Development, and Disseminate). The instruments of data collection consisted of media validation sheet, product quality assessment sheet, and student response sheets. This product qulity was assessed by one material expert, one media expert, and three chemistry teachers. The result showed that the quality of the Damdam Ji Chemistry learning media have very good quality with an percentage ideal of 96,91% from the chemistry teacher and have well postive response from the students with an percentage ideal of 93,2 %. The use of Damdam Ji Chemistry in chemistry learning can make learning more interesting with games.

The study aims to explore the pre-service chemistry teacher ability in constructing Content Representation (CoRe) on electrochemistry based context. This research adopted an instrumental case study. A total of 20 pre-service chemistry teacher enrolled on Curriculum course were the subject of this research. The data of pre-service chemistry teacher ability in constructing CoRe were collected according to the document which consist a questions on pedagogical aspect. There were 9 indicators were used as a references to explored the pre-service chemistry teacher ability in constructing CoRe. The data of pre-service chemistry teacher ability in constructing CoRe were analysed according to descriptive quantity technique by classifying the mean score obtained into five categories from very good to very poor. The result of this study showed that the pre-service chemistry teacher ability in constructing CoRe were pretty good, thus it can be concluded that pre-service chemistry teacher were ready to conducted a quality chemistry learning. The pre-service chemistry teacher in the future is expected applying CoRe in every learning to promote students’ chemistry meaningful learning.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cognitive structures of chemistry teacher candidates about “stereochemistry”. A case study research method, one of the qualitative research patterns, was used in the study and the sample of study involved 28 prospective chemistry teachers who had taken Organic Chemistry I and II courses at Education Faculty of a middle Anatolian university. For the data collection, stereochemistry concept inventory comprising of 20 questions was used. In the analysis of data, students’ responses in SCI were categorized. The detailed analysis of the results indicated that chemistry teacher candidates had some misconceptions concerning stereochemistry parallel to the literature. Based on these observations, some suggestions were presented for improving students’ foundational understanding about stereochemistry.

Abstract In this paper we describe and evaluate a study on the use of concepts in organic chemistry while solving tasks that are designed after the concept of school-related content knowledge (SRCK). The study was designed as a mixed methods study and conducted at a German university for the content of “organic chemistry”. As the results of this study show, the students rate the tasks and the use of anchoring concepts as for example “bonds” or “structure and function” as relevant for their future profession as a chemistry teacher. They therefore propose that concepts should be an integral part of their university studies as they find it lacking at the moment. Concepts can also be seen as an opportunity to build a bridge between school knowledge and university knowledge.

Abstract— This research is aimed to produce a prezi multimedia based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Basic Law of Chemistry material and to determine the level ov validaty and practicality based on media’s function. This research is Researc and Development (R&D) which applies 4-D madel: define, design, develop, and disseminate. The research is done until development stage. Determining the level of validity and practicality are done by Chemistry lecturer, Chemistry teacher, and students of class XI IPA SMAN 1 Bukittinggi. The research instrument is questionnaire which consists of validity questionnaire and practicality questionnaire. The technic of data collection is done by distributing questionnaire. The data is analyzed by using moment kappa. From the data analysis,it is found that Prezi Multimedia based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Basic Law of Chemistry material has moment kappa validity about 0,85 with very high level of validity, moment kappa practicality from teacher’s evaluation about 0,86 with very high level of practicality, and moment kappa practicality from student’s evaluation about 0,80 with high level of practicality. The learning media that have been developed is proved valid and practical, so it can be used on Chemistry learning process in class X IPA at SMAN 1 Bukittinggi.

In this work, we present an approach on methodology of teaching where pre-service chemistry teachers are required to analyze sequences of digital video of chemistry teaching in real classrooms. We utilize discourse analysis to help pre-service chemistry teachers to reflect on their pedagogical strategies and discursive interactions. The results showed that the integration of video analysis on the pre-service chemistry teacher training is an important methodological tool on professional development of chemistry teachers. Key-words: pre-service education, video, chemistry teacher, ICT.

High school chemistry teachers struggle to use assessment results to inform instruction. In the absence of expert assistance, teachers often look to their peers for guidance and support; however, little is known about the assessment beliefs and practices of high school chemistry teachers or the discourse mechanisms used as teachers support one another. Presented in this paper are the results from analyzing a discussion between five high school chemistry teachers as they generated a set of best practices for inquiry assessments. To analyze the discussion, a novel representation called a discourse map was generated to align the analyses conducted on chemistry teacher discourse as they temporally occurred. Results show the utility of the discourse map for evidencing critical friendship and assessment practices evoked by the teachers during the discussion of best practices. Implications for the structural considerations of materials and chemistry teacher professional development are presented as well as potential future investigations of teacher discourse regarding the use of data to inform instruction.
