Numerous experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to better understand and to improve prediction of cylinder VIV (vortex Induced Vibration) phenomenon. The behavior of cylinder due to in-line vibration (VIVx) has been neglected in the earlier studies because of its lower amplitude in comparison with cross flow vibration (VIVy). However, some researchers have studied VIVx in 2DOF along with VIVy. Recent investigations show that response amplitude of structure caused by VIVx is large enough to bring it to consideration. This study focuses on understanding the origin and prediction of VIVx amplitude exclusively in 1DOF and subcritical flow regime. The experiments were performed in current channel on bare circular cylinder with low mass-damping ratio in Reynolds number range Re = 10000 ∼ 45000.

The vortex shedding (VS) behind stationary bluff obstacles in cross-flow can be initiated by imposing thermal instability at subcritical Reynolds numbers (Re). We demonstrate here that additional thermal instability is required to be imparted in the form of heating for destabilizing the flow around a rotating bluff obstacle. A two-dimensional numerical simulation is performed in this regard to investigate the influences of cross buoyancy on the VS process behind a heated and rotating circular cylinder at subcritical Re. The flow is considered in an unbounded medium. The range of Re is chosen to be 5–45 with a dimensionless rotational speed (Ω) ranging between 0 and 4. At this subcritical range of Reynolds number the flow and thermal fields are found to be steady without the superimposed thermal buoyancy (i.e., for pure forced flow). However, as the buoyancy parameter (Richardson number, Ri) increases flow becomes unstable and subsequently, at some critical value of Ri, periodic VS is observed to characterize the flow and thermal fields. The rotation of the cylinder is found to have a stabilizing effect and as Ω increases more heating is observed to be required to destabilize the flow.

An advanced model for predicting a two-dimensional coupled cross-flow and in-line vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly-mounted circular cylinder in a uniform flow is proposed and investigated. Attention is placed on a systematic extraction of variable hydrodynamics properties associated with a bi-directional fluid-structure interaction system. The governing equations of motion are based on double Duffing-van der Pol (structural-wake) oscillators with the two structural equations containing cubic and quadratic nonlinear terms. The cubic nonlinearities capture the geometrical coupling of cross-flow/in-line displacements excited by hydrodynamic lift/drag forces whereas the quadratic nonlinearities allow fluid-structure interactions. The combined analytical and numerical solutions of the proposed model are established. By varying flow velocities in numerical simulations, the derived low-order model qualitatively captures several key VIV characteristics of coupled in-line/cross-flow oscillations. By making use of a newly-derived empirical formula, the predicted maximum cross-flow/in-line VIV amplitudes and associated lock-in ranges compare well with several experimental results for cylinders with low/high mass or damping ratios. Moreover, such important hydrodynamic properties as VIV-induced mean drag, added mass, excitation and damping terms can be systematically determined via the proposed model and compared well with some experimental results in the literature.

This paper presents a numerical study of flow around an elastically mounted circular cylinder in close proximity to a plane boundary vibrating in the transverse and inline directions in an oscillatory flow. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the SST k-ω turbulent equations are solved using the Arbitrary Langrangian-Eulerian (ALE) scheme and Petrov-Galerkin Finite Element Method for simulating the flow. The equation of motion is solved using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to find the displacements of the cylinder in the transverse and inline directions. The numerical model is validated against the previous results of vortex-induced vibration of an isolated circular cylinder in both cross-flow and inline directions. The flow model is further extended to study the vortex-induced vibration of a cylinder near a plane boundary with a very small gap ratio (e/D) of 0.01, with D and e being the diameter and the gap between the cylinder and the plane boundary, respectively. Simulations are carried out for two Keulegan-Carpenter (KC) numbers of 5 and 10 and a wide range of reduced velocities. It is observed that both the KC number and the reduced velocity affect the vibration of the cylinder significantly.

This paper gives a review on VIV experimental research. A detailed introduction of the experimental study on the cross-flow vortex-induced vibration of a towed circular cylinder in CSSRC’s towing tank is presented and classical VIV phenomena are explained and analyzed in this study. However, some results which are much different from those in the classical literatures in the past few decades are observed at the same time. For example, instead of reduced velocity Ur from 5 to 8, the “lock-in” region happened in the reduced velocity ranged from 10 to 14 in our tests, where the reduced velocity is calculated by the natural frequency. The non-dimensional frequency (oscillation frequency over natural frequency) of about 1.8 in the “lock-in” region is also different from that of 1.0 in the classical literatures. Interestingly, the author found that some of the results given by Moe and Wu (1990), Sarpkaya (1995), Govardhan and Williamson (2000), Pan zhiyuan (2005) and so on, reported the similar phenomenon. Since above listed papers have the same points of view, whether can we say that the results in this paper are possible for the case of low mass ratio. To conclude that, however, many questions need to be answered. In an effort to gain a better understanding of VIV phenomenon, this paper presents results of further analysis on the test cases and parameters.

Experiments have been carried out with models of free-to-rotate parallel and oblique plates fitted to a rigid section of circular cylinder to investigate the effect of plate length and oblique angle on the stability of this type of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppressor. Measurements of the dynamic response and trajectories of motion are presented for models with low mass and damping which are free to respond in the cross-flow and streamwise directions. It is shown that, depending on a combination of some geometric parameters, the devices might not be able to completely suppress VIV for the whole range of reduced velocities investigated. Plates with larger oblique angles turned to be less stable than parallel plates and induced high-amplitude vibrations for specific reduced velocities. Systems may present streamwise vibration due to strong flow separation and reattachment on the outer surface of plates with large oblique angles. Large angles may also increase drag. Experiments with a plain cylinder in the Reynolds number range from 3000 to 20,000 have been performed to serve as reference. Reduced velocity was varied between 2 and 13. Two-dimensional numerical simulation of static systems at Re = 10,000 revealed that complex and fully separated flow regimes exist for almost all investigated cases. There is a good chance that systems with such geometric characteristics will be unstable unless other structural parameters are positively verified.

The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a classical problem in ocean engineering. Intensive research on this field for flow around a circular cylinder has been observed, due to practical application, mainly the design of risers, cables and pipelines with free span. The relevance of this phenomenon is related to the structure failure, consequence of large displacement or fatigue. In the present study the influence of initial condition on the vortex induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder with two degree of freedom is investigated by the numerical solution of the slightly compressible formulation of Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes equations. An upwind and Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) conservative scheme is used to solve the governing equations written in curvilinear coordinates. The k–ε turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent flow in the wake of the cylinder. Two different initial conditions have been tested, free-stream and continuous reduced velocity increase (using the previous reduced velocity as initial condition for the next value). Results for the phase angle, amplitude, frequency, and lift coefficient are presented. The numerical results have been compared with experimental data of Jauvtis and Williamson [1]. The results indicate that the history of cylinder movement has a important impact in the amplitude oscillation observed in-line and cross-flow, principally in the reduced velocity range associated with the upper branch. Results obtained for the initial and lower branch seems to be independent of the initial condition. Further investigation are necessary to understand the difference observed such as the absence of the jump in the cross-flow oscillation between the initial and upper branch and the absence of in-line oscillation for reduced velocity in the range of 1–4 and the peak of in-line oscillation at reduced velocity 6.0.

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder in oscillatory flow is investigated numerically in this study. The incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations governing fluid flow around a circular cylinder are solved using Arbitrary Langrangian-Eulerian (ALE) scheme and Petrov-Galerkin finite element method. The equation of motion is solved for the displacements of the cylinder both in the inline and cross-flow directions. The numerical model is firstly validated against the experimental results of one-degree-of-freedom VIV in cross-flow direction. It is found that both VIV frequency and amplitude vary with reduced velocity for a fixed KC number. In most of the simulated cases the vibration comprises of multiple frequencies of different amplitudes. Each frequency component is multiple times of the frequency of the oscillatory flow. Two-degree-of-freedom VIV is investigated with the same parameters used in the one-degree-of-freedom case. By examining the XY-trajectory of the vibration, it if found that the vibration follows different trajectory for different KC numbers or reduced velocities.

A two-dimensional numerical simulation is applied to study the forces and responses associated with vortex-induced vibration of an elastically mounted circular cylinder with two degrees-of-freedom, i.e. the cylinder vibrates in in-line and cross-flow directions. This work could be regarded as a first step to carry out the prediction of vortex-induced-vibration responses of a long flexible beam with a number of two-dimension sections along the spanwise based on strip theory. A direct comparison has been made between the numerical results and measured data from the experiment by Jauvtis and Williamson in 2004. The peak cross flow response reaches 1.28 diameters in the present simulations. The profiles between the displacement and transverse force are found to have a good match with the experimental results, and a typical figure of ‘8’ trace is observed between the lift and drag forces in the initial and super-upper branches. Two typical in-line wake structures SS mode and AS mode are well reproduced in the low reduced velocity range. The newly discovered wake pattern 2T mode corresponds to the super-upper branch is also recaptured. Comparison shows that most features of the experiment can be reproduced by the present numerical model, and this model can be regarded a robust tool to investigate the responses, forces and the basic mechanics of vortex induced vibrations of an elastically mounted cylinder with two degrees-of-freedom.
