A new kind of smart hydrodynamic journal bearings with giant magnetostrictive actuators (GMA) is introduced. The static and dynamic displacement outputs of the designed GMA are up to tens of microns, about the same order of magnitude as the conventional journal bearing clearance. Vibration suppression of the new smart journal bearing is theoretically evaluated using a simple Jeffcott rotor-bearing system. Kinematic equations are set up including the magneto-mechanical coupling model for GMA. The bearing oil film force under large vibration is calculated using a fast and efficient non-stationary oil film database technique. The unbalance vibration orbit of the rotor center is simulated. A simple synchronous proportional control method for GMA with different control phases and gains is investigated. The suppress effect of unbalance vibration and improvement of oil whip unstable speed is evaluated. The simulation proves that the new journal bearing has better stability, and that rotor vibration can be actively suppressed.

A theoretical model for an active squeeze film damper (SFD) is introduced. The design makes it possible to change the radial clearance and land length of the SFD by adjusting the position of the damper ring. Expressions for the oil film forces are obtained. The vibration control of a flexible rotor is taken as an example of the application of the new design. The possibility of controlling rotor vibrations is demonstrated by means of numerical experiments.

To use modulated photothermal radiometry to control the thermophysical properties of enamel coatings, we first analytically resolve a theoretical model with two finite semitransparent layers and thermal-resistance interface; then we experimentally study several samples with various adhesion properties. The comparison of the experimental results with the calculations allows one, under the present conditions, to point out the possibilities and limits of the method, mainly for the control of coating thickness and delaminations.

A squeeze mode MR fluid damper used for rotor vibration control is designed and manufactured, and the unbalance response properties and control method of a single-disk flexible rotor system supported by the damper are studied experimentally. It is found from the study that the magnetic pull force can decrease both the first critical speed and the critical amplitude; the oil film reaction force can decrease the amplitude at the undamped critical speeds, but increase the amplitude in a speed range between two undamped critical speeds. For the rotor system supported by a journal bearing and an MR fluid damper, it is possible to appear oil film instability as the increasing of the control current. The damper may have the best effect to make the vibration minimize within the range of all working speed by using on-off control method. The research show that the squeeze mode MR fluid damper has the advantages such as simple structure, clearly effectiveness, quick response, etc., and this kind of damper has a promising potential future in vibration control of flexible rotor systems.

Considering the coupling moving of shaft and pads, a theoretical model for calculating the complete dynamic coefficients of tilting-pad bearing is described in this paper. The model includes the influence of turbulence. Based on this model, the effect of turbulence on journal equilibrium position, pads inclinations, and complete dynamic coefficients is investigated for given load cases. The numerical results indicate that the effect of turbulence is not neglected for higher Reynolds number.

This paper presents the theoretical formulation of a lithographical bending control (LBC) method that uses lithographical degrees of freedom to control the bending of a multilayered beam. LBC is applied to a piezoelectric actuator that uses PZT as the piezoelectric material. The theoretical model is compared with measurements using a weakly fixed bridge structure suited for curvature measurement.

The strip thickness control system is difficult to establish an accurate mathematical model, and traditional PID control strategy has a poor adaptive ability, so the effect of control is always not satisfying. According to the problems above, a new control strategy of self-tuning PID controller based on RBF neural network whose parameters are optimized by PSO algorithm is proposed in the paper. The control method integrates advantages of RBF neural network as well as PID controller and good global search capability of PSO algorithm. The simulation results indicate that the method not only improves control performance and dynamic quality, but also has strong self-adapting ability and robustness. It achieved a very good control effect when used in strip thickness control system that proved the correctness and effectiveness of the control method.
