A study of soft X-ray emission in the 1.0–1.5 keV energy range from a low energy (1.15 kJ) plasma focus has been conducted. X-rays are detected with the combination of Quantrad Si PIN-diodes masked with Al (50 μm), Mg (100 μm) and Ni (17.5 μm) filters and with a pinhole camera. The X-ray flux is found to be measurable within the pressure range of 0.1–1.0 mbar nitrogen. In the 1.0–1.3 keV and 1.0–1.5 keV windows, the X-ray yield in 4π-geometry is 1.03 J and 14.0-J, respectively, at a filling pressure of 0.25 mbar and the corresponding efficiencies are 0.04% and 1.22%. The total X-ray emission in 4π-geometry is 21.8 J, which corresponds to the system efficiency of about 1.9%. The X-ray emission is found dominantly as a result of the interaction of energetic electrons in the current sheath with the anode tip. Images recorded by the pinhole camera confirm the emission of X-rays from the tip of the anode.

Abstract The COMPASS tokamak is equipped with the soft X-ray (SXR) diagnostic system based on silicon photodiode arrays shielded by a thin beryllium foil. The diagnostic is composed of two pinhole cameras having 35 channels each and one vertical pinhole camera with 20 channels, which was installed recently to improve tomographic inversions. Lines of sight of the SXR detectors cover almost complete poloidal cross section of the COMPASS vessel with a spatial resolution of 1-2 cm and temporal resolution of about 3 μs. Local emissivity is reconstructed via Tikhonov regularization constrained by minimum Fisher information that provides reliable and robust solution despite limited number of projections and ill-conditionality of this task. Improved border conditions and numerical differentiation matrices suppressing artifacts in reconstructed radiation were implemented in the code. Furthermore, a fast algorithm eliminating iterative processes was developed, and it is foreseen to be tested in real-time plasma control.

The Relationship

The principle of radiographic X-ray spot size measurement with Bread piece was presented. The output responses of the Bread piece for uniformly-distributed X-ray sources are calculated numerically. The relationship between FWHM of the response curve and the spot size is obtained. Preliminary experiments were performed on the inductive voltage adder (IVA), and the Bread piece is used to measure the axial spot size of the rod-pinch diode (RPD) radiographic source. Under the hypothesis of uniformly-distributed line source, the axial spot size value is obtained, consistent with the measuring result of the pinhole camera, verifying the applicability of the Bread piece for radiographic X-ray spot size measurement.
