AbstractOnset temperature, Tm and offset temperature (liquidus) Tl of melting of a series of bulk glass forming alloys based on La, Mg, and Pd have been measured by studying systematically the melting behaviour of these alloys using DTA or DSC. Bulk metallic glass formation has been found to be most effective at or near their eutectic points and less effective for off-eutectic alloys. Reduced glass transition temperature Trg given by Tg/Tl is found to show a stronger correlation with critical cooling rate or critical section thickness for glass formation than Trg given by Tg/Tm.

As the part of investigation for immobilization of the sludge as one of the radioactive wastes arising from the treatment of contaminated water at Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, applicability of vitrification method has been evaluated as a candidate technique. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of NaCl as one of the main constituents of sludge, on glass formation and glass properties. Two kinds of iron phosphate glass (IPG) media in the xFe2O3-(100-x)P2O5, with x = 30 and 35 (mol%) were chosen and the glass formation, structure and properties including density, coefficient of thermal expansion, glass transition temperature, onset crystallization temperature and chemical durability of NaCl-loaded IPG were studied. The results are summarized as follows. Sodium chloride, NaCl could be loaded into IPG medium as Na2O and Cl contents and their loading ratio could be up to 19 and 15 mol%, respectively. Majority of Cl content of raw material NaCl was thought to be volatilized during glass melting. Loading NaCl into IPG induces to depolymerize glass network of phosphate chains, leads to decrease both glass transition and onset crystallization temperatures, and to increase coefficient of thermal expansion. NaCl-loaded IPG indicated good chemical durability in case of using 35Fe2O3-65P2O5 medium.

In order to determine the region of glass formation between the AsS and ErS compounds, we studied the methods of physicochemical analysis: differential thermal (DTA), X-ray phase (XRD), microstructural (MCA), as well as by measuring microhardness and density. The eutectic composition between the AsS and ErS compounds is 10 mol. % ErS and temperature 280oC. At a cooling rate v = 102 K / min, the glass transition region based on AsS reaches 10 mol. % ErS. Some physicochemical properties of alloys from the region of glass formation have been investigated. The area of homogeneity based on AsS reaches up to 1.5 mol. % ErS.

In this work, glass formation under high-energy ball milling was investigated for a (Ti0.33Zr0.33Hf0.33)50(Ni0.33Cu0.33Ag0.33)40Al10 high-order alloy system with equiatomic substitution for early and late transition-metal contents. For comparison, an amorphous alloy ribbon with the same composition was prepared using the melt-spinning method as well. Structural features of the samples were characterized using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Mechanical alloying resulted in a glassy alloy similar to that obtained by melt spinning. However, the glass formation was incomplete, and a small amount of unreacted crystallites smaller than 30 nm in size still remained in the final ball-milled product. Like the melt-spun glass, the ball-milled glassy alloy also exhibited a distinct glass transition and a wide supercooled liquid region of about 80 K. Crystallization of this high-order glassy alloy proceeded through two main stages. After the primary nanocrystallization was completed, the remaining amorphous phase also behaved as a glass, showing a detectable glass transition and a large supercooled liquid region of about 100 K.

Glass formation and structural properties of the unconventional lead cuprate glasses of compositions (CuO)x (PbO)100−x (mol %), are reported for the first time. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopic studies show that the glass formation occurs for x = 15-50 mol%. The compositional dependence of the density, molar volume, and glass transition temperature suggests that all glass compositions in this domain have the same topology and network connectivity. The glass structure is built up of [PbO4] tetrahedral units. On heat treatment above glass transition temperatures, the glasses crystallize to CuO and PbO. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectra of the glass compositions consist of broad resonance lines.
