Ultrasonic testing of metal welds has been in use for many years. Scanning methods using both contact and immersion methods are often used at the time of manufacture and also during periodic in-service inspection programs. But because of a variety of component configurations and potential flaw geometries it is often necessary to perform several inspections, each with a different probe configuration to assure adequate defect delegability. It is possible that a properly designed phased array probe can perform several different inspections without changing hardware thereby reducing inspection times. This presentation reviews the design and operation of ultrasonic phased array transducers and the necessary features to achieve the desired performance. Situations in which these probes have already been implemented effectively are also discussed.

This paper presents the results of ultrasonic phased array field trials that were performed on the Maritimes and North East Pipeline 30 inch pipeline project during the summer of 1999 in order to demonstrate the feasibility of using this new technology for inspection of pipeline girth welds. The direct comparison between the two systems showed that the phased array system had equal, or better sensitivity to the multi-probe system in determining the length and vertical extent of the indications. The phased array system detected all of the same indications as the multi-probe system, was inherently more reliable due to less moving parts, and demonstrated much faster switch over times for different configurations.

In order to promote the phased array technology for the application of weld inspection, the advantage of phased array technology was introduced and the application of rails welding inspection with phased array technology was also introduced. Through detecting nature and machining flaws of aluminum-themic welding of rails, contrast to results of conventional ultrasound test, validate the effectiveness of ultrasonic phased array method, concluding characteristics of ultrasonic phased array method for the aluminum-themic welding of rails. From the result of application, the efficiency of weld inspection could be greatly improved and the inspection cost could be greatly reduced by phased array technology.
