A standard naming convention for mechanical parts is proposed in this paper. We refer to this naming convention as the component basis. The component basis is a first step at classifying an exhaustive list of human-made mechanical transmission artifacts as functional forms, geometric shapes, simple machines, and natural forms. The proposed component basis provides a framework for the development of a suite of computational conceptual design tools. This suite of design tools includes a function-based computational concept generator and a product evolution methodology.

Computer codes for the analysis of marine steam condensers were coupled with a numerical optimization code to provide fully automated design. The resulting programs are excellent design tools for the conceptual design of a condenser to meet specified constraints. Examples illustrate the versatility of this method.

In speaking of modern higher education, we mean an educational system that allows young specialists to fit into the labour market. Such specialists need to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills not only to perform work on the project, but also to attack the problem creatively. The task of higher school is to provide the necessary set of knowledge and skills that will allow young specialists to work successfully and to be on the march. The language of communication of engineers is drawings. Computer drawings allow reducing the working time considerably in the development, production, remediation, transfer, and retention. Therefore, the ability to use drawing program for working with images is necessary. Despite all the powerful design tools and visualization, a key moment in computer design is the documentation of the product and its design in accordance with accepted standards that is considered to be an integral part of the design process. After the successful development of a 2D environment, the expert can confidently move on to 3D modeling that facilitates the receipt of drawings and models at times and gives you the opportunity to inspect the settings of the virtual model and, if necessary, to improve them significantly. Usage of different CAD-systems for communication engineers- partners is a reality. Therefore it is very useful for a specialist to be able to use different programs. Modern graphic programs (AutoCAD, SolidEdge) have many similar opportunities, but they also have some differences. Knowledge of several drawing programs is necessary and reduces the amount of time for the skills development for usage of each CAD-system is the problem of the future engineer. The article compares two different programs and the possibility of using the both CAD-systems for working with drawings.

In order to develop a successful product, a design engineer needs to pay attention to all relevant aspects of that product. Many tools are available, software, books, websites, and commercial services. To unlock these potentially useful sources of knowledge, we are developing C-DET, a toolbox for conceptual design engineering. The idea of C-DET is that designers are supported by a system that provides them with a knowledge portal on one hand, and a system to store their current work on the other. The knowledge portal is to help the designer to find the most appropriate sites, experts, tools etc. at a short notice. Such a toolbox offers opportunities to incorporate extra functionalities to support the design engineering work. One of these functionalities could be to help the designer to reach a balanced comprehension in his work. Furthermore C-DET enables researchers in the area of design engineering and design engineers themselves to find each other or their work earlier and more easily. Newly developed design tools that can be used by design engineers but have not yet been developed up to a commercial level could be linked to by C-DET. In this way these tools can be evaluated in an early stage by design engineers who would like to use them. This paper describes the first prototypes of C-DET, an example of the development of a design tool that enables designers to forecast the use process and an example of the future functionalities of C-DET such as balanced comprehension.
