Early-life sleep deprivation (ESD) is a serious condition with severe cognitive sequelae. Considering hippocampus plays an essential role in cognitive regulation, the present study aims to determine whether melatonin, a neuroendocrine beard with significant anti-oxidative activity, would greatly depress the hippocampal oxidative stress, improves the molecular machinery, and consequently exerts the neuro-protective effects following ESD. Male weanling Wistar rats (postnatal day 21) were subjected to ESD for three weeks. During this period, the animals were administered normal saline or melatonin (10 mg/kg) via intraperitoneal injection between 09:00 and 09:30 daily. After three cycles of ESD, the animals were kept under normal sleep/wake cycle until they reached adulthood and were sacrificed. The results indicated that ESD causes long-term effects, such as impairment of ionic distribution, interruption of the expressions of neurotransmitters and receptors, decreases in the levels of several antioxidant enzymes, and impairment of several signaling pathways, which contribute to neuronal death in hippocampal regions. Melatonin administration during ESD prevented these effects. Quantitative evaluation of cells also revealed a higher number of neurons in the melatonin-treated animals when compared with the saline-treated animals. As the hippocampus is critical to cognitive activity, preserving or even improving the hippocampal molecular machinery by melatonin during ESD not only helps us to better understand the underlying mechanisms of ESD-induced neuronal dysfunction, but also the therapeutic use of melatonin to counteract ESD-induced neuronal deficiency.

Azide (0.2 to 5.0 mM) and chloretone (2.0 to 15.0 mM) reversibly inhibited 20 to 90 per cent of the resting respiration of frog sciatic nerves, and caused a loss of potassium and a gain of sodium in this tissue. The changes in ionic contents that developed after 5 or 10 hours were roughly correlated with the degree of respiratory depression, but the time courses of these changes were different with the two reagents. In azide these changes appeared to begin immediately, while in chloretone, at concentrations between 3.0 and 5.0 mM, the ionic shifts developed after a delay of several hours. Fifteen millimolar chloretone produced immediate changes in ionic contents several times greater than those produced by anoxia. The changes in ionic distribution produced in 5 hours by anoxia, 5.0 mM azide, or 5.0 mM chloretone were at least partially reversible; those produced by 15.0 mM chloretone were irreversible. With the exception of 15.0 mM chloretone the ionic shifts produced by these reagents may be due primarily to the depression of the respiration, although there are indications that azide acts, in addition, by another pathway. Concentrations of azide or chloretone that depressed the resting rate of oxygen consumption more than 50 per cent produced a slow conduction block, while 15.0 mM chloretone blocked conduction within 15 minutes.

The phase transition of DNA molecules is studied in an exactly solvable formalism with the Morse and Deng–Fan potentials for the interstrand hydrogen bonds of nucleotide base pairs. It is shown that although the two potentials have different short-range behaviors, the thermodynamic quantities of the DNA system in these potentials enjoy the same scaling laws with the associated critical exponents, which are explicitly calculated. These exactly solvable DNA models are shown to exhibit a phase transition of the second order and the results of the analysis agree with previous studies.

Mutants of the Y locus differed appreciably in their basic conversion frequencies (frequencies of conversion in one-point crosses) to wild type. The differences in the basic conversion frequencies in the opposite direction, i.e. from corresponding wild-type allele to mutant, were in general not pronounced. For some alleles frequencies of conversion in both directions were similar, but for the others they differed markedly. No evident correlation between the position of mutants on the map and their basic conversion frequencies was observed.In two-point crosses in repulsion, the great majority of recombinant octads were of conversion type. In these crosses symmetry or asymmetry of conversion depended mainly on similarity or differences in basic conversion frequencies of mutants crossed. In crosses between mutants from different clusters the recombination frequencies were near to the sums of their basic conversion frequencies. Such ‘mutant specificity’ makes it impossible to establish the linear order of mutants on the basis of recombination frequencies in two-point crosses.The results of two-point crosses in repulsion between mutants within clusters pointed to the influence of one allele on the frequency of conversion of another one. This ‘marker effect’ was also evident in some three-point crosses.The frequencies of simultaneous conversions in two-point crosses in coupling did not show negative correlation with the distances between the mutants involved.It seems that many of the data presented here are most easily explained by recently developed hybrid DNA models.

Saccharification Yield

Statistical evidence pointing to the very soft change in the ionic composition on the surface of the sugar cane bagasse is crucial to improve yields of sugars by hydrolytic saccharification. Removal of Li+ by pretreatments exposing -OH sites was the most important factor related to the increase of saccharification yields using enzyme cocktails. Steam Explosion and Microwave:H2SO4 pretreatments produced unrelated structural changes, but similar ionic distribution patterns. Both increased the saccharification yield 1.74-fold. NaOH produced structural changes related to Steam Explosion, but released surface-bounded Li+ obtaining 2.04-fold more reducing sugars than the control. In turn, the higher amounts in relative concentration and periodic structures of Li+ on the surface observed in the control or after the pretreatment with Ethanol:DMSO:Ammonium Oxalate, blocked -OH and O− available for ionic sputtering. These changes correlated to 1.90-fold decrease in saccharification yields. Li+ was an activator in solution, but its presence and distribution pattern on the substrate was prejudicial to the saccharification. Apparently, it acts as a phase-dependent modulator of enzyme activity. Therefore, no correlations were found between structural changes and the efficiency of the enzymatic cocktail used. However, there were correlations between the Li+ distribution patterns and the enzymatic activities that should to be shown.
