ABSTRACTThe Argonne Intense Pulsed Neutron Source and General Purpose Powder Diffractometer have been used to study high Tc metal oxide composites composed of yttrium barium copper oxide and silver. Neutron diffraction techniques were applied to composites with 15, 20 and 30% silver content by volume. We have observed that after hot pressing, the 30% Ag specimens contained both orthorhombic high Tc and tetragonal, non-superconducting phases near the center of the specimens but only tetragonal near the surface. The relationship of shifts in Bragg peaks to strains of the constituents is discussed.

AbstractThe structure of a completely amorphous zircon was determined by time-of-flight neutron diffraction at Argonne's Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS). The sample of metamict zircon (ZrSiO4), initially doped to 8.85 weight percent 238pu, had been completely amorphized by alpha-recoil damage since its synthesis in 1981 at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The measured diffraction structure factor, S(Q), indicated a completely amorphous sample, with no signs of residual zircon microcrystallinity. The pair distribution function obtained indicated that the structure was that of an oxide glass, retaining the Si–O, Zr–O, and O–O bond lengths of crystalline zircon.

AbstractWe have developed a technique for determining the atomic elastic constants from measurements of the Debye-Waller factors. The Debye-Waller factors are obtained by Rietveld refinement of time-of-flight neutron diffraction data and interpreted in terms of an atomic Debye-Waller temperature. The method is applicable to powders and to materials that must be encapsulated for safety or environmental reasons. We will illustrate our technique with applications to actinide metals, to metallic hydrides and to high-temperature superconductors.
