We have investigated the solvent-dependence of structural changes along with intersystem crossing of a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule, 3,4,5-tri(9H-carbazole-9-yl)benzonitrile (o-3CzBN), in toluene, tetrahydrofuran, and acetonitrile solutions using time-resolved infrared (TR-IR) spectroscopy and DFT calculations. We found that the geometries of the S1 and T1 states are very similar in all solvents though the photophysical properties mostly depend on the solvent. In addition, the time-dependent DFT calculations based on these geometries suggested that the thermally activated delayed fluorescence process of o-3CzBN is governed more by the higher-lying excited states than by the structural changes in the excited states.<br>

This contribution presents the results of the TD-DFT and CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations on [W(CO)4(MeDAB)] (MeDAB = N,N'-dimethyl-1,4-diazabutadiene), [W(CO)4(en)] (en = ethylenediamine), [W(CO)5(py)] (py = pyridine) and [W(CO)5(CNpy)] (CNpy = 4-cyanopyridine) complexes. Contrary to the textbook interpretation, calculations on the model complex [W(CO)4(MeDAB)] and [W(CO)5(CNpy)] show that the lowest W→MeDAB and W→CNpy MLCT excited states are immediately followed in energy by several W→CO MLCT states, instead of ligand-field (LF) states. The lowest-lying excited states of [W(CO)4(en)] system were characterized as W(COeq)2→COax CT excitations, which involve a remarkable electron density redistribution between axial and equatorial CO ligands. [W(CO)5(py)] possesses closely-lying W→CO and W→py MLCT excited states. The calculated energies of these states are sensitive to the computational methodology used and can be easily influenced by a substitution effect. The calculated shifts of [W(CO)4(en)] stretching CO frequencies due to excitation are in agreement with picosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopy experiments and confirm the occurrence of low-lying M→CO MLCT transitions. No LF electronic transitions were found for either of the complexes studied in the region up to 4 eV.

AbstractOne of the open questions in semiconductor physics is the origin of the small splittings of the excited states of bound excitons in silicon. A free electron laser as a tunable source of the mid-infrared radiation (MIR) can be used to investigate such splittings of the excited states of optical centers created by transition metal dopants in silicon. In the current study, the photoluminescence from silver and copper doped silicon is investigated by two color spectroscopy in the visible and the MIR. It is shown the PL due recombination of exciton bound to Ag and Cu is quenched upon application of the MIR beam. The time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and the quenching effects of these bands are presented. By scanning the wavelength of the free-electron laser ionization spectra of relevant traps involved in photoluminescence are obtained. The formation and dissociation of the bound excitons, and the small splittings of the effective-mass excited states are discussed. The applied experimental method allows correlation of DLTS data on trapping centers to specific channels of radiative recombination. It can be applied for spectroscopic analysis in materials science of semicondutors.

Time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) from CO molecules in hydrocarbon flames was studied. Collisional quenching constants were evaluated on the basis of the exponential decays. Effective lifetime in a methane/oxygen flame was observed to vary between 250 and 400 ps depending on the position within the flame, and from 400 to 600 ps in the non-sooty parts of an ethylene/air flame. Fluorescence, constituting simultaneous spatially and temporally resolved decays, was also registered from various sections along a laser beam that probed different parts of the flame. Spectral recordings revealed not only the expected CO peaks but also, in the ethylene flame, laser-induced emission from C2 Swan bands and from polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission that affected the fluorescence time decay in the sooty part of the flame.
