AbstractCyclopentadithiophene (CPDT), a Csp3-bridged bithiophene heteroaromatic unit, displays interesting properties when it is embedded in the repeating units of π-conjugated polymers, and they are applied in organic electronics devices. Common synthetic routes to CPDT-derived polymers rely on toxic methodologies whilst alternative non-toxic strategies such as the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction have been less studied. In this report we demonstrate that the use of a N-methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronate ester-derived CPDT monomer allows the efficient formation of poly(cyclopentadithiophene) homopolymer under Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction conditions. Thus, the use of MIDA boronate esters might be extended to other organic units to design and construct a plethora of π-conjugated polymers.

The voltammetric behaviour of amavadine (AV) was found to be considerably different from that of the complexes of VO2+ with methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) and iminodiacetic acid (IDA). To get an insight in the rather complicated reduction mechanism of the latter complexes the reductions of V(III) (MIDA) and V(III) (IDA) have been studied for comparison. The species V(III) (MIDA)2 and V(III) (IDA)2 are reduced to the appropriate V(II) complexes in a chemically reversible process. VO(MIDA)2 and VO(IDA)2 are reduced to the same complexes via an ECE mechanism. The investigation of the electroreduction of AV shows that this process is not reversible in the chemical sense. As a probable explanation, the conclusion was drawn that AV and the usual V(IV)O-iminocarboxylato complexes differ in their structures.

Condensation of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehydes with 2-, 3-, and 4-H2NC6H4Bpin (pin = 1,2-O2C2Me4) gave the corresponding boron-containing pyridinecarboxaldimines (N–NBpin). Addition of these ligands to [PtCl2(coe)]2 (coe = cis-cyclooctene) gave complexes of the type cis-PtCl2(N–NBpin) in moderate yields. The platinum complexes have been examined for their potential cytotoxicities against OV2008 (human ovarian carcinoma) and the analogous cisplatin-resistant cell line C13. Key words: boronate esters, pyridinecarboxaldimines, cytotoxicity, platinum, boron.
