For the purpose of developing novel photovoltaic materials and organic photovoltaic devices with good performance characteristics, 5-cyano-2,2′:5′,2″-terthiophene (3T-CN) and 5-cyano -2,2′:5′,2″:5″,2″′-tetrathiophene (4T-CN) were synthesized. The 3T-CN and 4T-CN was donor-acceeptor type oligothiophene derivatives with liquid crystal properties. The rigid and flexible photovoltaic devices were fabricated using 3T-CN, 4T-CN and 3,4,9,10-perylenetertracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). Comparision of the rigid device based on 4T showed that both rigid device glass-ITO/4T-CN/PTCDA/Al and flexible device PET-ITO/4T-CN/PTCDA/Al had higher short circuit current density (Isc) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) than that of glass-ITO/4T /PTCDA/Al. The -CN group played an important role in increasing Isc and PCE. It is due to that the mesogenic properties of 4T-CN, which enhances the efficiency by promoting forward interfacial electron transfer.

Silicon nanoparticles doped poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester blends (P3HT:PCBM: Si NP) have been produced as the photoactive layer of organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs). The silicon nanoparticles’ size is between 80 and 100 nm checked by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The 0.35 wt% Si NP doping OPVs exhibit higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) than other OPVs. The PCE of the OPVs increases from 3.01% to 3.38% mainly due to increasing short-circuit current density from 8.38 to 9.48 mA/cm2, while the open-circuit voltage remains the same. The Si NP can provide extra exciton separation and electron pathways in hybrid solar cells.

Hybrid organic photovoltaic devices (OPVDs) are fabricated using the electrostatic spray (e-spray) method and their optical and electrical properties are investigated. E-spray is used to deposit a hybrid film (P3HT: PCBM/nanodiamond) with morphology and optical characteristics onto OPVDs. The root-mean-square roughness and optical absorption increase with increasing nanodiamond content. The performance of e-spray is comparable to that of the spin-coating method under uniform conditions. The device takes advantage of the high current density, power conversion efficiency, and low cost. Nanodiamond improves the short-circuit current density and power conversion efficiency. The best performance was obtained with 1.5 wt% nanodiamond content, with a current density of 7.28 mA/cm2and a power conversion efficiency of 2.25%.

AbstractAn extended study on a group of four soluble diphenyl-amino-stilbene based diphenyl-diketopyrrolo-pyrrole molecules has been carried out. Using the materials in thin-film transistors it was shown that the above-mentioned compounds can be successfully used as donors in organic photovoltaic devices. Influence of the molecular symmetry and solubilizing chain on the morphology and solar cell performance are described. It was shown that a shorter and non-branched ethyl acetate chain leads to higher charge carrier mobility, short circuit current, and better fill factor. After the basic optimization, a power conversion efficiency of about 1.5 % was reached. This, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest reported efficiency of thiophene-free small-molecule diketo-pyrrolopyrroles.
