In atomically-thick B5N5 monolayer, antiferromagnetism arises from spontaneous symmetry breaking due to flat bands in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. An electric-controllable prototype spin filter with nearly 100% spin polarization is proposed based on B5N5 monolayers.

Spin-polarized electron transport through a zigzag zinc oxide nanoribbon (ZnONR) has been studied using first-principles transport simulations. Ribbons without edges passivated show 100% spin polarization at small bias voltage independently of width. The ribbons with edge zinc atoms passivated maintain absolute spin-filtering effect in much larger bias region. The results demonstrate that zigzag ZnONRs act as perfect spin-filters in the absence of magnetic electrodes and external fields.

The basis of spin filter operation is the possibility to obtain different population of states with spins up and down for free electrons. However, in a magnetic macroscopic field, scattering by heavy atoms reduces their population density by 106 times. To obtain the maximum possible degree of spin polarization it is proposed to use ferromagnetic EuO in semiconductor superlattices, e. g. EuO–SrO. The article substantiates the creation of a spin filter based on a superlattice composed of SrO and EuO nanolayers. The scheme of ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO energy levels is demonstrated as well as splitting of 5d EuO levels by crystal field. The position of 4f 7-multiplet and the energy of formation of triplet exciton are determined.

AbstractBased on density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism, we explore the effect of Fe atom in Au-Fe@C20-Au monomer and dimer systems in comparison with the C20 fullerene molecular junctions. We calculate the spin-dependent transmission coefficient, spin polarization and also their spin thermoelectric coefficients to investigate magnetic properties in the system. Our results indicate that the presence of Fe atoms enhances substantially the spin-filter and increases the spin figure of merit in the dimer system. We suggest that the Au-(Fe@C20)2-Au system is a suitable junction for designing spin-filtering and spin thermoelectric devices and eventually it is a good candidate for spintronic applications.
