Zero-field level-crossing techniques have been used to measure some upper-state lifetimes of the helium atom. The half-widths of curves obtained by plotting the polarization against the magnetic field strength for the n1D–21D transitions yielded lifetimes of 2.03 × 10−8 s for the 31D state, 3.36 × 10−8 s for the 41D state, and 7.44 × 10−8 s for the 51D state. Collision cross sections for these 1D levels were also determined.

The zero-field level-crossing technique has been used to determine the lifetimes of the 5p2 3P2,1 and 4d2 3P levels of neutral strontium. The results are compared with those given in the literature and calculated from the available values of oscillator strengths. We have determined the following lifetimes: τ(5p2 3P2) = 6.39 ± 0.20 ns; τ(5p2 3P1) = 6.91 ± 0.20 ns; τ(4d2 3P) = 6.74 ± 0.15 ns.

The lifetime of the 5p2P3/2 level of Sr+ has been measured using the zero field level crossing (Hanle effect) technique with optical excitation from the ground state of the ion. The ions are produced in a discharge at the mouth of a furnace used to produce a strontium beam. No foreign gas is used to carry the discharge. An alignment depolarization cross section is obtained for collisions between Sr+ ions and Sr neutral atoms. The results are compared with the published ones.

Circularly polarized light is used in the excitation and analysis. The ions are produced in a discharge at the mouth of the furnace used to produce a beam of strontium atoms. No foreign gas is used to carry the discharge. The oscillator strength of the 4215 Å, 5s2S1/2–5p2P1/2 transition is discussed.
