The interatomic exchange interactions and the electronic structure of Co-doped ZnO with and without oxygen vacancy have been investigated by the first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. It is found that the oxygen vacancy can strengthen the ferromagnetic exchange interaction between Co atoms and might be available for carrier mediation. The oxygen vacancy near to the Co atoms is more favorable for the ferromagnetic ground state.

This work signifies the next step in our way in the magnetic properties simulation of spin clusters and extended networks containing quantum spins, by original FORTRAN codes based on Heisenberg–Dirac–VanVleck (HDVV) or Ising approaches, using Full Diagonalization Heisenberg Matrix (FDHM) or Monte Carlo–Metropolis (MCM) procedure, respectively. We present the results of magnetic Monte Carlo studies on a magnetite type lattice, Ising model ferrimagnet that provide insight into the exchange interactions involved in Cubic Ferrospinels. We have demonstrated that a comparatively simple model can reproduce ferrimagnetic behavior of ferrospinels, particularly for magnetite.

Successful synthesis of Cu, Co co-doped ZnO film is obtained by sol-gel method. The structural and electrical properties of the sample were investigated. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy analyses indicate that the Co and Cu co-doping can not disturb the structure of ZnO. No additional peaks are observed in the Zn0.99Co0.01CuxO and Cu+ and Co2+ substitute for Zn2+ without changing the wurtzite structure. By Hall-effect measurement p-type conductivity was observed for the Cu co-doped film. XPS result confirmed Cu ions are univalent in the films.

Successful synthesis of room-temperature ferromagnetic semiconductors, (Cu, Co) co-doped ZnO film is obtained by sol-gel method. It is found that the essential ingredient in achieving room-temperature ferromagnetism is Cu co-doping. By Hall-effect measurement ap-type conductivity was observed for the Cu co-doped films, which induced the room-temperature ferromagnetism.
