A diffusion barrier between a 4th generation superalloy (MC-NG) and a β-(Ni, Pt)Al has been studied. The used coating process combines Re and NiW electrolytic deposits followed by thermal treatments. The diffusion barrier is composed of a continuous 3 &m thick ReWNi layer under a 10 &m thick β-(Ni, Pt)Al containing W rich precipitates. EDS analysis on as coated samples and on 50h-1100°C-Ar aged samples showed that the Re-NiW layer works as a diffusion barrier. The Al reservoir in the bond coat after aging is higher with the diffusion barrier than without. The concentrations of alloying elements are also lower in the bond coat with the diffusion barrier than without.

The characterization of the microstructure evolution during welding of nickel base superalloys is required for efficient reuse and reclamation of used and failed components. Previous atom probe analysis of electron-beam and laser-beam welds revealed complex alloying elemental partitioning between the γ and γ phases. Rapid cooling conditions in the weld leads to non-equilibrium partitioning and large amplitude Cr and Co levels in the γ phase. These results indicated that there is a strong relationship between weld cooling rate and the precipitation of γ′ precipitates from the γ phase. To understand and develop predictive models, a systematic investigation of the microstructure evolution in CM247DS alloy under controlled thermomechanical conditions are being performed. This paper describes some recent results on the elemental partitioning between γ and γ′ phases obtained with atom probe microanalysis.

The effect of alloying elements on the volume fraction of γ′ phase at aging temperature was investigated. The results indicated the volume fraction of γ′ was mainly sensitive to Al, Ti, Nb, Ta, and Cr. Based on analyzing the chemical component and the volume fraction of γ′ phase of 20 kinds of nickel-base superalloys , a linear regression formula between the volume fraction of γ′ phase and alloying element content was established using Matlab software, and the formula was given as: Vγ′=21.06+5.76Al+0.41Co-0.95Cr+0.84Hf+2.15Nb+0.82Ta+3.06Ti, where the correlation coefficient r = 95.5%. This linear equation was more accurate compared with the three public empirical formulas.
