The anatomical characteristics, chemical composition, and physical and mechanical properties of fast-growing Populus × euramericana cv. ‘74/76’ juvenile wood were investigated. Four- to five-year-old clonal plantation trees were harvested from two different experimental sites in the suburbs of Beijing. The Shunyi site had black alkali soil with a planting density of 4 × 6 m and the Miyun site had sandy loam soil with a planting density of 3 × 5 m. The test results showed that the poplar trees from the two sites were both fast growing, with poplar at Shunyi growing faster than at Miyun. There were no significant differences in wood properties between trees grown at the two sites. Fiber length at breast height varied from 872 to 1300 μm between growth rings, average fiber width varied from 21.0 to 25.5 μm and double wall thickness varied from 5.0 to 6.6 μm. Average cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose contents in the samples were 48.9%, 25.4%, and 18.8%, respectively. MFA was higher in the first two growth rings (20–25°), and then decreased rapidly to 12° close to the bark. The average air-dry density at breast height was 401 kg/m3 while the average MOE at breast height was 9.3 GPa. The trees showed large growth rates in both height and stem diameter during the growing season. However, wood properties of the juvenile poplar appeared to be similar to those of poplars with a slower growth rate.

The interest in replacing native wood with fast growing reforestation wood is recurrent, aiming at larger quantities of material in less time with no losses in its resistive properties. This paper consists in comparing the behavior of in natura structural timber parts with glued laminated timber, made with polyurethane resin based on castor oil, with regard to the resistance to axial compression. The assembly process of these pieces aims to achieve a similar or even superior resistance to the solid ones, considering that the MLC method allows the construction of structural pieces of many sizes and formats using different pieces of wood. Two this end, two species of wood, Pinus and Eucalyptus will be compared. The polyurethane resin, manufactured by the company Imperveg, was used in the process of glueing the stacks together. Evaluations will be performed according to NBR7190 (1997) aiming to characterize the physical and mechanical properties of the pieces and the results obtained will be submitted to statistical analysis by the Anova method.

Carbon nanotube reinforcement is a key emerging technology to simultaneously impart enhanced mechanical properties while adding multifunctional characteristics to polymer materials and systems. The promise of extraordinary improvement in-end use properties of polyolefin/carbon nanotube hybrid systems has spurred great interest and intensive activity in academics and industries. This review offers a comprehensive discussion of the preparation, compounding, properties and applications of such nanocomposites. The processing, dispersion and orientation of nanotubes, as well as the characterisation of physical and mechanical properties of carbon nanotube filled polyolefins are discussed. In particular the scientific principles and mechanisms in relation to the methods of manufacturing are highlighted, with an outlook towards commercial applications.

BACKGROUND: The paper analyzes the properties of medium density fiberboards (MDF) intended for furniture production and interior application. Because MDF panels are one of the mostly used wood-based panels in furniture production sector in the Republic of Macedonia it is important to know and understand their basic physical and mechanical properties. AIM: For better understanding of MDF panels and their proper end use by the furniture constructors and designers, physical and mechanical properties of MDF panels present in the market are tested.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Commercially produced MDF panels taken from one company from wood-based panel market were tested. Evaluation of the quality of the panels was made on the basis of the obtained results for the physical and mechanical properties of the panels. Properties of MDF were tested according to the national MKS standards and European norms.RESULTS: Tested MDF panels present on our market are characterized by good physical and mechanical properties that meet the requirements of the standards for MDF for use in dry conditions including furniture production and interior applications.CONCLUSIONS: It is recommended to avoid application of these MDF panels in high humidity conditions for a longer exploitation period. For this kind of applications, such as bathroom areas, the furniture constructors and interior designers should consider use of MDF.H type of panel for application in high humidity conditions, which will provide good dimensional stability of the products during whole exploitation period.

The paper aims to investigate the influence of the characteristics of the strands on the properties of oriented strand boards (OSB). To solve this objective, some global synthetic characteristics of the strands (the slenderness ratio, the characteristics of thinness, and the specific surface) of four wood species currently used in this technology (spruce and pine for softwood, and poplar and willow for hardwood) were first studied. The characteristics of the OSB obtained from each species separately were also determined, and finally the correlations analysis was made between the characteristics of the strands and those of the corresponding OSB boards. The working methodology used the European tests regarding the physical and mechanical properties of the boards, but also algorithms for forecasting and evaluating the quality of the strands and boards. The conclusions regarding the characteristics of the strands have highlighted the role of the specific surface of the strand and the characteristics of the thickness; respectively, the conclusions regarding the characteristics of the boards showed that the fast-growing species of willow and poplar lead to obtaining higher quality OSB boards. The general conclusion of the paper is that the characteristics of the strands have a significant influence on the physical–mechanical properties of the OSB board.
