Research on walking vehicles and variable configuration wheeled vehicles is reviewed. The central feature of the vehicles discussed is terrain adaptive capability. The principal elements of the technical problems of coordination and control are discussed for each vehicle type. Examples of each vehicle type are discussed and an extensive reference list is provided. Although the article is primarily a review article, it contains a new discussion of the coordination problem of robotic mechanisms.

Luster is a special type of decoration, which gives ceramics a particular iridescent gold translucency and was applied to the medieval surface of glazed pottery. In this work the PIXE technique has been applied to luster pottery dated back from the 10th to the 13th centuries, excavated in Neishabur, Ray and Kashan, located in the northeast and in the central part of Iran. The principal elements of the glaze were detected, as well as the elements which characterize the luster, such as Cu and Ag . The elemental concentrations of Ti , Mn , Fe , Co , Cu , Zn , Ag , Sn and Pb were also obtained from the PIXE analysis. This study clearly demonstrates that in addition to firing conditions and the presence of impurities in glaze, the ratio of Cu 2 O/Ag 2 O determines the color effect of luster.

The concept of gated community housing is a feature of contemporary housing development. Housing developers promote this concept through an emphasis on security in gated housing. House owners today favour fenced-in residences, not only for their homes, but also for the entire housing development, including recreational areas and other facilities. The aim of this study is to prioritize the elements of physical security in a gated community housing development. The methodology employed a quantitative approach using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in ascertaining the weightage for each element deemed important in the planning of secure gated community housing, with focus on the elements of access, fencing, CCTV installation, lighting, guardhouse and landscape, which are the principal elements that serve to enforce security in the protected community. The results of this study showed that two principal elements, namely access to the property (entry/exit points) and protective fencing, were deemed the most important in providing security in gated community housing. Accordingly, these aspects should be accorded particular attention in the planning of gated communities in the future and be factored into the strategy to enhance security.Gated community housing and guarded neighbourhoods employing such a strategy would be quite effective in providing security to residents.

The biological importance of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the field of medicine – related to cervical carcinogenesis – has been extensively reported in the last decades. For the first time, a direct correlation between cause and effect to explain a cancer development was completely achieved in medical research. Consequently, the Nobel Prize was awarded to HZ Hausen in 2008 for his efforts to understand the effects of persistent infection of oncogenic types of HPV and malignancy transformation. The aim of the present review was to summarize the principal elements of HPV characteristics and their importance in oncology.

A statistical model is a possible representation (not necessarily complex) of a situation of the real world. Models are useful to give a good knowledge of the principal elements of the examined situation and so to make previsions or to control such a situation. In the banking sector, models, techniques and regulations have been developed for evaluating Market and Credit risks, for linking together risks, capital and profit opportunity. The regulations and vigilance standards on the capital have been developed from the Basel Committee founded at the end of 1974 by the G10. The standards for the capital’s measurement system were defined in 1988 with the “Capital Accord” (BIS, 1988); nowadays, it is supported from over 150 countries around the world. In January 2001 the Basel Committee published the document “The New Basel Capital Accord” (BIS, 2001), which is a consultative document to define the new regulation for the bank capital requirement. Such a document has been revisited many times (see BIS, 2005). With the new accord there is the necessity of appraising and managing, beyond the financial risks, also the category of the operational risks (OR) already responsible of losses and bankruptcies (Cruz (Ed.), 2004; Alexander (Ed.), 2003; Cruz, 2002).

This chapter addresses the challenges of providing necessary, but politically sensitive, Western support to a tribunal overtly designed to be an African mechanism. Two principal elements motivated Switzerland's actions in Senegal: Switzerland's commitment to promoting international criminal justice and its longstanding engagement with Chad. It is within this context of strong and active engagement in Chad, along with the direct repercussions for the people of Chad of the trial of Hissène Habré, that it became apparent that Switzerland should actively engage with the Extraordinary African Chambers (EAC). Concretely, this engagement entailed making a range of technical assistance available and facilitating relations and communications among the various stakeholders, rather than financing the EAC as a donor. This choice was made in light of the ongoing concern of ensuring that actions in Senegal could also have a positive impact for Chad. Switzerland additionally participated in the Steering Committee for the financing of the EAC as an observer.
