In actual operation process of a ship, the engine-propeller-hull is an integrated system with internal coupling effects, and thus there is a close interaction between the diesel engine propulsion system operation conditions and the ship manoeuvring motions. The propulsion system can experience large power fluctuation during manoeuvring, with considerable torque increase with regard to the stabilized value in straight course. However, the diesel engine propulsion system behaviour and ship manoeuvrability are usually studied separately as they are considered to belong to different disciplines. Thus, it is difficult to reflect the actual operating characteristics of the propulsion system and ship manoeuvring motion under coupled conditions in actual operation. To investigate the interaction between the propulsion system behaviour and the manoeuvrability of a large containership, this paper proposed a multi-disciplinary ship mobility model capable of coupling the marine diesel engine model and the ship manoeuvring model. In the engine model, the mean value modelling approach was adopted to simulate the two-stroke marine diesel engine considering the fact that it can capture the performance of the engine sub-systems including scavenging receiver, exhaust gas receiver, turbocharger, etc. In the manoeuvring model, the MMG-based method was used to simulate the ship manoeuvring motion with three degrees-of-freedom. The engine model and manoeuvring model were coupled through the propeller model that transferring propeller speed and torque between the two models. The coupled model was validated against the engine shop test data and the sea trial results. By applying this coupled model, a series of simulations of turning circle manoeuvres under various scenarios were performed. The simulation results presented the dynamic response of engine internal sub-systems during turning circle manoeuvring, explained the effect of the torque limiter on engine performance and ship manoeuvring motion, and analyse the influence of different propulsion system control strategies on the ship turning circle manoeuvrability. Although the presented case study has been validated on a specific ship, most of the discussed models have a general application.

Abstract This work evaluated the effect of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on fuel consumption and pollutant emissions from a diesel engine fueled with B8 (a blend of biodiesel and Diesel 8:92%% by volume), experimentally and numerically. Experiments were carried out on a Diesel power generator with varying loads from 5 kW to 35 kW and 10% of cold EGR ratio. Exhaust emissions (e.g. THC, NOX, CO etc.) were measured and evaluated. The results showed mild EGR and low biodiesel content have minor impact of engine specific fuel consumption, fuel conversion efficiency and in-cylinder pressure. Meanwhile, the combination of EGR and biodiesel reduced THC and NOX up to 52% and 59%, which shows promising effect on overcoming the PM-NOX trade-off from diesel engine. A 3D CFD engine model incorporated with detailed biodiesel combustion kinetics and NOx formation kinetics was validated against measured in-cylinder pressure, temperature and engine-out NO emission from diesel engine. This valid model was then employed to investigate the in-cylinder temperature and equivalence ratio distribution that predominate NOx formation. The results showed that the reduction of NOx emission by EGR and biodiesel is obtained by a little reduction of the local in-cylinder temperature and, mainly, by creating comparatively rich combusting mixture.

A nonlinear dynamic model is developed in this study to simulate the overall performance of a naturally aspirated, single cylinder, four-stroke, direct injection diesel engine under cold start and fully warmed-up conditions. The model considers the filling and emptying processes of the cylinder, blowby, intake, and exhaust manifolds. A single zone combustion model is implemented and the heat transfer in the cylinder, intake, and exhaust manifolds are accounted for. Moreover, the derivations include the dynamics of the crank-slider mechanism and employ an empirical model to estimate the instantaneous frictional losses in different engine components. The formulation is coded in modular form whereby each module, which represents a single process in the engine, is introduced as a single block in an overall Simulink engine model. The numerical accuracy of the Simulink model is verified by comparing its results to those generated by integrating the engine formulation using IMSL stiff integration routines. The engine model is validated by the close match between the predicted and measured cylinder gas pressure and engine instantaneous speed under motoring, steady-state, and transient cold start operating conditions.

This paper proposes a combination of higher order sliding mode and adaptive control for unified fault detection and isolation and fault tolerant control (FTC) of the air path of a diesel engine. Current diesel engines are equipped with features such as variable geometry turbochargers (VGT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for exhaust emission control. Since EGR and VGT systems are present in the exhaust channel, they are strongly coupled and are prone to both structured as well as unstructured faults. The proposed controller detects and estimates the structured faults by means of adaptation laws, designed by making use of the certainty equivalence principle. Fault effects are compensated by repositioning the actuators. This allows relaxation of the boundedness condition of the super twisting algorithm, as sliding mode controller gains are required to dominate the unstructured parts only, which consequently reduces chattering. A nonlinear multi-input multi-output reduced state control-oriented model has been employed for working out the FTC strategy for EGR and VGT actuators. The stability of the overall system has been analysed using the Lyapunov stability criterion. Faults and proposed controllers are simulated using a fully validated industrial scale diesel engine model to establish the effectiveness of the algorithm.
