A new chemoselective method for the synthesis of 2-aryl-1,3-oxazoles by deoxygenation of the corresponding N-oxides has been developed. As the deoxygenation reagent, a previously unknown complex of collidine with phosphorus trichloride in a 2:1 ratio has been used. The developed method enabled the preparation of a wide range of 2-aryl-1,3-oxazoles comprising various functional groups in good yields. The advantage of this reagent is its tolerance to nitro, methyl, hydroxyl, formyl, and acetyl groups, and double bonds. Due to chemoselectivity and availability of reagents, the method may be used for deoxygenation of N-oxides of other heterocyclic compounds (thiazole, pyridine, quinoline, etc.).

When Mycobacterium aurum MO1 was grown with morpholine, the release of ammonia into the supernatant was proportional to the disappearance of morpholine, showing that this compound was mineralized. MO1 was able to grow in high concentrations of morpholine but accumulation of ammonia inhibited growth and degradation of morpholine. Immobilization of bacterial cells in carrageenan gel beads showed that morpholine degradation in these conditions began earlier and was faster than in free culture. One of the two branches of the lower pathway of morpholine biodegradation was induced while the other branch was inhibited in the presence of morpholine. Strain MO1 grew on heterocyclic compounds similar to morpholine, demonstrating that MO1 is able to degrade heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen atoms (piperidine and pyrrolidine). Compounds containing sulphur or oxygen atoms or compounds with double bonds were not degraded.Key words: Mycobacterium aurum, morpholine, biodegradation.

Lipids are an important class of molecules, being found in membranes, HDL, LDL, and other natural structures, serving essential roles in structure and with varied functions such as compartmentalization and transport. Synthetic liposomes are also widely used as delivery and release vehicles for drugs, cosmetics, and other chemicals; soap is made from lipids. Lipids may form bilayer or multilammellar vesicles, micelles, sheets, tubes, and other structures. Lipid molecules may be linked to proteins, carbohydrates, or other moieties. EM study of this essential ingredient of life has lagged, due to lack of direct methods to visualize lipids without extensive alteration. OsO4 reacts with double bonds in membrane phospholipids, forming crossbridges. This has been the method of choice to both fix and stain membranes, thus far. An earlier work described the use of tungstate clusters (W11) attached to lipid moieties to form lipid structures and lipid probes.
