As the prognosis of malignant conditions in children improve by cancer therapy, long-term side effects due to antineoplastic treatment may be encountered. This case report demonstrates the long-term alterations on dental development in patient who had been treated for malignant condition. Alterations were observed during radiographic control 8 years after the therapy and included short, blunted, tapered and V-shaped root malformations as well as delayed and ectopic eruptions.

With the improvement in cancer survival, long-term cardiotoxicity has become an area of increased interest. Various cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy can lead to cardiac toxicities with both acute and chronic manifestations. Awareness and early recognition can lead to improvement in cardiac survival and patient outcomes. The focus of this review is to summarize the cancer therapy agents most often associated with cardiovascular side effects, highlighting their mechanism of action and strategies for surveillance and prevention.

Background Distribution of COVID-19 vaccines has been surrounded by suspicions and rumors making it necessary to provide the public with accurate reports from trustworthy experts such as healthcare professionals. Methods We distributed a questionnaire in Jordan among physicians, dentists and nurses who received a COVID-19 vaccine to explore the side effects (SE) they encountered after the first or the second dose of one of three vaccines namely: AstraZeneca Vaxzevria (AZ), Pfizer-BioNTeck (PB), and SinoPharm (SP) vaccines. Results A total of 409 professionals participated. Approximately 18% and 31% of participants reported no SE after the first dose and second dose, respectively. The remainder had mostly local side effects related to injection site (74%). Systemic side effects in the form of fatigue (52%), myalgia (44%), headache (42%), and fever (35%) prevailed mainly after the first dose. These were significantly associated with AZ vaccine, and age ≤ 45 years (p = 0.000 and 0.01, respectively). No serious SE were reported. Conclusions We can conclude that SE of COVID-19 vaccines distributed in Jordan are within the common range known so far for these vaccines. Further studies are needed to include larger sample size and longer follow-up period to monitor possible serious and long-term SE of the vaccines.

UV radiation (UV) is considered as a complete carcinogen as it is both a mutagen and a non-specific damaging agent. It is the most important risk factor for skin cancer and many other skin disorders like Hyperpigmentation. There is a need of long-term topical skin care treatments (both cosmetic and cosmeceutical) to address problems associated with hyperpigmentation. Synthetic depigmenting agents, such as hydroquinone, mequinol, although highly effective, can raise several safety concerns (for example, ochronosis, cataract, impaired wound healing, desquamation, and other local or systemic side effects) with long-term exposure. The benefits of phytochemicals and natural extracts offer opportunities to develop new formulations to treat pigmentation problems. Cosmeceuticals are topical cosmetic-pharmaceutical preparations containing active ingredients which improve the appearance of skin. Among cosmeceuticals, the phytochemicals have been known to have a multitude of cellular actions for various dermatological diseases. SummaryThe realization that steroidal contraceptives administered immediately after delivery to lactating women may be excreted into milk, and adversely affect the neonate, is a cause for concern. Most investigations on hormonal contraceptives have dealt with the efficacy of ovulation suppression, and systemic side effects, but little is known about the appearance of steroids or their metabolites in milk. Apart from the immediate side effects on the neonate, unforeseen long-term consequences require special consideration. Until research provides us with more information, women should use breast-feeding and IUDs instead of steroidal contraceptives during the first trimester post-partum.

Despite much progress in cancer therapy, conventional chemotherapy can cause poor biodistribution and adverse side-effects on healthy cells. Currently, various strategies are being developed for an effective chemotherapy delivery system. Silk fibroin (SF) is a natural protein used in a wide range of biomedical applications including cancer therapy due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and unique mechanical properties. In this study, SF-coated liposomes (SF-LPs) were prepared as a biomimetic drug carrier. Physicochemical properties of SF-LPs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In vitro release of SF-LPs loaded with doxorubicin (DOX-SF-LPs) was evaluated over 21 days. Anticancer activity of DOX-SF-LPs was determined against MCF-7 and MDA-MB231 cells using the MTT assay. SF-LPs containing 1% SF exhibited favorable characteristics as a drug carrier. SF coating modified the kinetics of drug release and reduced the cytotoxic effect against L929 fibroblasts as compared to the uncoated liposomes containing cationic lipid. DOX-SF-LPs showed anticancer activity against breast cancer cells after 48 h or 72 h at 20 μM of DOX. This approach provides a potential platform of long-term release that combines biocompatible SF and phospholipids for cancer therapy, achieving efficient drug delivery and reducing side-effects.

Nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles, nanorods, nanosphere, nanoshells, and nanostars, are very commonly used in biomedical imaging and cancer therapy. They make excellent drug carriers, imaging contrast agents, photothermal agents, photoacoustic agents, and radiation dose enhancers, among other applications. Recent advances in nanotechnology have led to the use of nanomaterials in many areas of functional imaging, cancer therapy, and synergistic combinational platforms. This review will systematically explore various applications of nanomaterials in biomedical imaging and cancer therapy. The medical imaging modalities include magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, positron emission tomography, single photon emission computerized tomography, optical imaging, ultrasound, and photoacoustic imaging. Various cancer therapeutic methods will also be included, including photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. This review also covers theranostics, which use the same agent in diagnosis and therapy. This includes recent advances in multimodality imaging, image-guided therapy, and combination therapy. We found that the continuous advances of synthesis and design of novel nanomaterials will enhance the future development of medical imaging and cancer therapy. However, more resources should be available to examine side effects and cell toxicity when using nanomaterials in humans.
