Carbon dots (CDs) with blue fluorescence were synthesized by indole-3-butyric acid and l-tryptophan using a one-step hydrothermal method. The CDs were used as a fluorescent sensor with high selectivity for colorimetric and ratiometric detection of tetracycline (TC) in water.

Due to its lethal effect on the human body and other creatures, Cr(VI) ions have attained widespread public attention, and an effective adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions is vital. Chitosan (CS)/cellulose nanocrystals grafted with carbon dots (CNCD) composite hydrogel with strong sorption ability and sensitive detection ability for Cr(VI) was formed. The cellulose nanocrystals (CN) offered a natural skeleton for assembling 3D porous structures, and then improved the sorption ability for Cr(VI); moreover, carbon dots (CD) acted as a fluorescent probe for Cr(VI) and provided Cr(VI) adsorption sites. With a maximum adsorption capacity of 217.8 mg/g, the CS/CNCD composite hydrogel exhibited efficient adsorption properties. Meanwhile, with a detection limit of 0.04 μg/L, this hydrogel was used for selective and quantitative detection of Cr(VI). The determination of Cr(VI) was based on the inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching. This hydrogel retained its effective adsorption ability even after four repeated regenerations. Furthermore, the economic feasibility of the CS/CNCD composite hydrogel over activated carbon was confirmed using cost analysis. This study provided one new method for producing low-cost adsorbents with effective sorption and sensitive detection for Cr(VI).

The use of carbon dots (CDs) with dual emission based on ratiometric fluorescence has been attracting attention in recent times for more accurate ion detection since they help avoid interference from background noise, probe concentration, and complexity. Herein, novel dual-emission nitrogen-doped CDs (NCDs) were prepared by a simple method for Cu2+ and ClO- detection. The NCDs showed excellent anti-interference ability and selectivity for different emissions. In addition, a good linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence intensity (FI) of the NCD solutions in different emissions with Cu2+ (0–90 μM) and ClO- (0–75 μM). The limits of both Cu2+ detection and ClO- were very low, at 17.7 and 11.6 nM, respectively. The NCDs developed herein also showed a good recovery rate in water for Cu2+ and ClO− detection. Hence, they are expected to have a more extensive application prospect in real samples.

Fluorescence materials such as carbon dots are unique and non-toxic materials that can be produced using many methods. In this research, synthesis and optical characterization of carbon dots from the peels of dragon fruit and pear have been done. The synthesis uses bottom-up method using microwave with 20 minutes, 40 minutes, and 80 minutes of heating time. The result of optical characterizations showed that the samples that have been heat treated are carbon dots based of the absorbance in the range of 280-350 nm, and the intensity are decreased in the range of visible and infrared wavelength. There are emission and intensity changes by different heat treatments. From the samples of dragon fruit's peels, the emission wavelength tended to shift toward visible light at the wavelength of 551.51 nm, 507.98 nm and 487.28 nm with the excitation at the wavelength of 420 nm from pulsed pico-laser. While, the emission wavelength from the samples of pears peels were fluctuate in wavelength of 529.09 nm, 507.52 nm and 519.46 nm. Similarly, the time-resolved photoluminescence characterization test showed that there were time changes in each sample of carbon dot. The decay lifetime of carbon dots was fluctuated between 4.5 ns - 5.4 ns for dragon fruit’s peels and about 1.9 ns - 2.4 ns for pear's peels.
