1. I wish in the first place to express my warmest thanks to the Council of the Royal Aeronautical Society for the honour they have done me in inviting me to read this paper on alloy structures. I have no claim whatever to be considered a metallurgist or an expert in any way on the technical uses to which alloys are put. I only venture to give this lecture because nowadays a physicist has a finger in most pies. The discoveries of physics concern all sciences interested in the structure and properties of matter. Since ultimately the properties of matter are dependent upon its atomic structure, and this is the field in which physics has made such rapid recent advances, its findings have become of especial importance.

Recent advances in synthesis, characterization and application of the selected conducting/semiconducting and redox-active oligomers and polymers of arylamines are reviewed. A brief historical background of the selected topics is given. The overview of the preparation, structure and properties of polyaniline, substituted polyanilines, especially those obtained by the oxidative polymerization of p-substituted anilines, poly(1-aminonaphthalene) and its derivatives, carbocyclic and heterocyclic polyaryldiamines such as poly(p-phenylenediamine) and polydiaminoacridines, is presented. The mechanism of formation of polyaniline nanostructures is discussed. Recent approaches to the preparation of one-dimensional polyaniline nanostructures are concisely reviewed, with special attention paid to the template-free falling-pH method. Current and potential future applications of oligo/polyarylamines are briefly discussed.

AbstractDendrimers and hyperbranched polymers represent a revolution in methodology for directed synthesis of monodisperse polymers with enormous possibility of novel architectures. They demonstrate ability to attain micelle-like structures with distinct internal and external character. Furthermore polyfunctional character of dendrimers allows varied response to environment and promise as selective sensors, carrier for drugs, encapsulation of toxic chemicals and metals. One of the key problems are the characterization of the structures. Theory and simulation can be essential to provide and predict structure and properties. Here, we present some recent advances in theory, modeling and simulation of dendritic polymers.
