The V4+ (spin ½) oxovanadates AV3O7 (A = Ca, Sr) were synthesized and studied by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The room-temperature structures of both compounds are orthorhombic and their respective space groups are Pnma and Pmmn. The previously assumed structure of SrV3O7 has been revised and the temperature dependence of both crystal structures in the temperature ranges 297–100 K and 315–100 K, respectively, is discussed for the first time.

AbstractOrthorhombic edingtonite has been found coexisting with tetragonal edingtonite in a specimen from Ice River, British Columbia, Canada. We report data on the composition and crystal structure of the orthorhombic sample. Lattice parameters are: a = 9.5341(6), b = 9.6446(6), c = 6.5108(7)Å, V = 598.68(8)Å 3. The crystal structure was refined in space group P 21212 to R1 = 1.8% using 879 observed reflections. For the first time, evidence for splitting of the extra-framework Ba site in two different sites (Ba1, Ba2), ~0.37 Å apart, is demonstrated. A comparison with the published crystal structures of tetragonal and orthorhombic edingtonite is made. The present result supports the suggestion that the two edingtonite phases are a consequence of different nucleation phenomena and not different physicochemical conditions.

The crystal structures of Ni(AlCl4)2, Ni(GaCl4)2 and Na[Ni(AlCl4)3] were determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. Ni(AlCl4)2 and Ni(GaCl4)2 are isotypic and crystallize in the Co(AlCl4)2 structure type (I2/c, a = 1276.40(9)/1268.48(7), b = 771.41(5)/757,74(3), c = 1145.47(8)/1154.34(7) pm, β = 92.067(3)/91.778(4)°, Z = 4). The structure contains chains of NiCl6 octahedra and AlCl4/GaCl4 tetrahedra linked by corners and edges. Na[Ni(AlCl4)3] represents a new structure type (P21/c, a = 1356.34(6), b = 1200.82(6), c = 1213.31(6) pm, β = 105.647(6)°, Z = 4). Its characteristic feature is the chiral [Ni(AlCl4)3]− anion which is found here for the first time. The tetrachloroaluminate ions serve as bidentate ligands leading to an octahedral coordination of the nickel atom.

<p>Metal–organic frameworks that display step-shaped adsorption profiles arising from discrete pressure-induced phase changes are promising materials for applications in both high-capacity gas storage and energy-efficient gas separations. The thorough investigation of such materials through chemical diversification, gas adsorption measurements, and <i>in situ </i>structural characterization is therefore crucial for broadening their utility. We examine a series of isoreticular, flexible zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) of the type M(bim)2 (SOD; M = Zn (ZIF-7), Co (ZIF-9), Cd (CdIF-13); bim– = benzimidazolate), and elucidate the effects of metal substitution on the pressure-responsive phase changes and the resulting CO2 and CH4 step positions, pre-step uptakes, and step capacities. Using ZIF-7 as a benchmark, we reexamine the poorly understood structural transition responsible for its adsorption steps and, through high-pressure adsorption measurements, verify that it displays a step in its CH4 adsorption isotherms. The ZIF-9 material is shown to undergo an analogous phase change, yielding adsorption steps for CO2 and CH4 with similar profiles and capacities to ZIF-7, but with shifted threshold pressures. Further, the Cd2+ analogue CdIF-13 is reported here for the first time, and shown to display adsorption behavior distinct from both ZIF-7 and ZIF-9, with negligible pre-step adsorption, a ~50% increase in CO2 and CH4 capacity, and dramatically higher threshold adsorption pressures. Remarkably, a single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase change to a pore-gated phase is also achieved with CdIF-13, providing insight into the phase change that yields step-shaped adsorption in these flexible ZIFs. Finally, we show that the endothermic phase change of these frameworks provides intrinsic heat management during gas adsorption. </p>

The article uses little known letters of M. Gorky, many of which were published for the first time in 1997, as well as findings of Samara-based experts in local history to shed light on the writer’s work as editor-in-chief of the Samarskaya Gazeta newspaper in 1895. The researcher introduces hitherto unstudied reminiscences of the journalist D. Linyov (Dalin) about this period, which reference a letter by Gorky, now lost. The paper details a newly discovered episode of Gorky’s professional biography as a journalist: it concerns his campaign against a Samara ‘she-wolf,’ the madam of a local brothel A. Neucheva. Linyov’s reminiscences turn out to be an important and interesting source, offering an insight into the daily grind of the young editor Gorky, providing new evidence of his excellent organizational skills, and describing his moral and social stance. The author presents his work in the context of a recently initiated broader discussion about the need to map out all Russian periodicals for the period until 1917, as well as all research devoted to individual publications.

The planting area of macadamia in China accounted for more than one third of the world’s planted area. The lipid compositions, minor components, and antioxidant capacities of fifteen varieties of macadamia oil (MO) in China were comparatively investigated. All varieties of MO were rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, mainly including oleic acid (61.74–66.47%) and palmitoleic acid (13.22–17.63%). The main triacylglycerols of MO were first time reported, including 19.2–26.1% of triolein, 16.4–18.2% of 1-palmitoyl-2,3-dioleoyl-glycerol, and 11.9–13.7% of 1-palmitoleoyl-2-oleoyl-3-stearoyl-glycerol, etc. The polyphenol, α-tocotrienol and squalene content varied among the cultivars, while Fuji (791) contained the highest polyphenols and squalene content. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated the polyphenols and squalene content positively correlated with the antioxidant capacity. This study can provide a crucial directive for the breeding of macadamia and offer an insight into industrial application of MO in China.
