<span>This paper presents the microstrip antenna with different applied frequencies used as a non-invasive hyperthermia applicator. This non-invasive hyperthermia applicator is introduced to clarify the sufficient heat distribution on the treated tissue for different breast cancer stages. 57 mammogram breast cancer images from early-stage to stage-3 are analyzed to obtain the required penetration depth and focus position distance. Then, the simulation-based experiment is carried out to observe the heating distribution on different stages of cancer with two different operating frequencies; 915MHz and 2450MHz. Also included in this paper is the prediction on the period for hyperthermia treatment planning execution. Based on the results, various penetration depths are obtained when different operating frequencies are applied. 915MHz antenna showed better results when compared to 2450MHz, where microstrip applicator with 915MHz is able to heat cancer at stage-1, stage-2, and stage-3 with good penetration depth and focus position distance, while 2450MHz only performed well in early-stage cancer. Meanwhile, different stages require various periods of time. From the results, the shortest period for hyperthermia execution simulated in the early-stage and then followed by stage-3, stage-2, and the longest period is in stage-1.</span>

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has emerged as an important modality for cancer treatment. SDT utilizes ultrasound excitation, which overcomes the limitations of light penetration in deep tumors, as encountered by photodynamic therapy (PDT) which uses optical excitations. A comparative study of these modalities using the same sensitizer drug can provide an assessment of their effects. However, the efficiency of SDT and PDT is low in a hypoxic tumor environment, which limits their applications. In this study, we report a hierarchical nanoformulation which contains a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved sensitizer chlorin, e6, and a uniquely stable high loading capacity oxygen carrier, perfluoropolyether. This oxygen carrier possesses no measurable cytotoxicity. It delivers oxygen to overcome hypoxia, and at the same time, boosts the efficiency of both SDT and PDT. Moreover, we comparatively analyzed the efficiency of SDT and PDT for tumor treatment throughout the depth of the tissue. Our study demonstrates that the strengths of PDT and SDT could be combined into a single multifunctional nanoplatform, which works well in the hypoxia environment and overcomes the limitations of each modality. The combination of deep tissue penetration by ultrasound and high spatial activation by light for selective treatment of single cells will significantly enhance the scope for therapeutic applications.

Among current biological researches, there have a plenty of works related cancer therapy issues by using functional or pure-phased composites in non-invasive strategies. Especially in fabricating anticancer candidates, functional composites are divided into different sorts with different characteristics. Additionally, nanotechnology provides various approaches in utilizing composites’ functionality for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. Compared with previous Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), Photo-Thermal Therapy (PTT), chemotherapy and radiotherapy, ultrasound is used to activate sonosensitizer to produce cytotoxic Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) toward target cancer cells. In recent years, the form of Sonodynamic Therapy (SDT) has been making much effort to develop highly efficient metal based Nanomaterials (NMs) as sonosensitizers, which can efficiently generate ROS and has the advantages of deeper tissue penetration. However, the traditional sonosensitizers, such as porphyrins, hypericin, and curcumins suffer from complex synthesis, poor water solubility, and low tumor targeting efficacy. For contrasting this limitation, the metal based inorganic NMs show biocompatibility, controllable physicochemical properties, and ease of achieving multifunctional properties, which greatly expanded their application in SDT. In this review, we systematically summarize the metal based inorganic NMs as carrier of molecular sonosensitizers, and produce ROS under ultrasound. Moreover, the prospects of advanced metal based further materials application are also discussed.

Abstract BackgroundLung cancer was regarded as the most common type of tumors worldwide, and the relative lethality was considerably high. However, since the tumor tissues located in deeper parts in human bodies, the traditional technologies like photodynamic therapy could not reached desired effect. Sonosensitizers can induce sonodynamic therapy, possessing the benefits of deep penetration and effective tumor inhibition by generating reactive oxygen. Besides, ultrasound possessed the ability of deep penetration, which showed favorable tumor inhibition effect.ResultsA redox/enzyme/ultrasound responsive Rhein-chondroitin sulfate nano-preparation encapsulating docetaxel was initially fabricated. The nanoparticles show increased cellular uptake with quick drug release, revealing good stability and monodispersed form in physiological environment. Also, Rhein could induce apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential change, enhancing the expression of apoptosis-related protein. Further, the inhibited metastasis and angiogenesis of cancer cells by sonodynamic therapy would lead to reduced expression of M2 type macrophages.ConclusionRhein was firstly discovered to possess the sonodynamic effect in this work by generating plenty of reactive oxygen after treating by ultrasound. The nanoplatform enhanced synergistic anti-tumor effect by both sonodynamic therapy and chemotherapeutic efficacy, and showed benign biocompatibility, which might pave a way for the investigation of chemo-sonodynamic therapy with different cancers.

BACKGROUND: Cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet is a common clinical symptom in Asian women. Currently, treatment of cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet is still limited to traditional Chinese medicine, mainly herbal medicine. However, many patients with cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet in China are not satisfied with the therapeutic effect of herbal medicine, and took medication for a longer time. Chemical lumbar sympathectomy is widely used in the treatment of plantar hyperhidrosis, diabetic foot, recalcitrant erythromelalgia, and other diseases. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to evaluate the short-term as well as long-term efficacy, complications, and patient satisfaction of chemical lumbar sympathectomy during treatment cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, observational study. SETTING: Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Jiaxing, China. METHODS: A retrospective study of 72 patients with cold hypersensitivity in the hands and feet who received chemical lumbar sympathectomy treatment in our hospital from January 2015 to October 2018 was conducted. The heart rate, non-invasive blood pressure, oxygen saturation, visual analog scale, perfusion index, and plantar temperature were monitored and recorded in before treatment (T1) and after treatment (T2) groups. The patients were followed up on day 1, at week 1, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, one year, and 2 years after operation for satisfaction, complications, and recurrence. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in heart rate, non-invasive blood pressure, and oxygen saturation between T1 and T2 groups (P > 0.05). Perfusion index and plantar temperature in T2 group were remarkably higher than T1 group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). The visual analog scale score of the T2 group was significantly reduced (P < 0.01). Of all the patients who underwent chemical lumbar sympathectomy, the postoperative therapeutic effect was effective in 63 cases (87.5%) and ineffective in 9 cases (12.5%). Among the effective patients, the postoperative curative effect was shown to be excellent in 47 cases and improved in 16 cases. According to the follow-up results at day 1, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after operation, the satisfaction rate was 87.5%, 87.5%, 81.9%, 61.1%, 52.7%, 41.6%, and 34.7%, respectively. There were no serious complications observed and 23 patients relapsed after two years. Multivariate logistic regression analysis results showed that the effect of visual analog scale (OR = 7.312, 95% CI: 1.598 – 33.646, P = 0.011) and plantar temperature (OR = 0.470, 95% CI: 0.288 – 0.766, P = 0.002) on therapeutic effect showed has statistical significance; the effect of gender (OR = 0.654, 95% CI: 0.134 – 3.181, P = 0.599), age (OR = 0.975, 95% CI: 0.916 – 1.039, P = 0.441), perfusion index (OR = 0.710, 95% CI: 0.367 – 1.375, P = 0.310), and disease course (OR = 1.019, 95% CI: 0.997 – 1.042, P = 0.088) on therapeutic effect showed no statistical significance. The effect of gender (OR = 0.451, 95% CI 0.131 – 1.554, P = 0.207), age (OR = 0.961, 95% CI 0.912 – 1.013, P = 0.141), and course of disease (OR = 1.006, 95% CI 0.997 – 1.015, P = 0.203) on postoperative recurrence showed no statistical significance. LIMITATIONS: The nonrandomized, single-center, small sample size, retrospective design is a major limitation of this study. CONCLUSIONS: Chemical lumbar sympathectomy is a valid treatment option for cold hypersensitivity in hands and feet, and computed tomography-guided percutaneous puncture chemical lumbar sympathectomy has the advantages of high success rate, less invasion, less complications, and repeatablity. Abstract The metastasis of breast cancer is believed to have a negative effect on its prognosis. Benefiting from the remarkable deep-penetrating and non-invasive characteristics, sonodynamic therapy (SDT) demonstrates a whole series of potential leading to cancer treatment. To relieve the limitation of monotherapy, a multifunctional nanoplatform has been explored to realize the synergistic treatment efficiency. Herein, we establish a novel multifunctional nano-system which encapsulates chlorin e6 (Ce6, for SDT), perfluoropentane (PFP, for ultrasound imaging), and docetaxel (DTX, for chemotherapy) in a well-designed PLGA core-shell structure. The synergistic nanoparticle (CPDP NPs) featured with excellent biocompatibility and stability primarily enables its further application. Upon low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) irradiation, the enhanced ultrasound imaging could be revealed both in vitro and in vivo. More importantly, combined with LIFU, the nanoparticle exhibits intriguing antitumor capability through Ce6 induced cytotoxic reactive oxygen species as well as DTX releasing to generate a concerted therapeutic efficiency. Furthermore, this treating strategy actives a strong anti-metastasis capability by which lung metastatic nodules have been significantly reduced. The results indicate that the SDT-oriented nanoplatform combined with chemotherapy could be provided as a promising approach in elevating effective synergistic therapy and suppressing lung metastasis of breast cancer.
