The continual drive toward smaller second level interconnect dimensions, along with the introduction of Halogen-Free circuit board materials and increased process temperatures of Lead-Free solders, have all contributed to a more frequent occurrence of Pad Crater damage in circuit board materials during manufacturing and test processes. This paper addresses the methodology and test data of some common industry methods used to evaluate Pad Crater strength in circuit board materials. Pad Crater test data is highly sensitive to sample design; as a result a discussion of sample design criteria is also included.

Organic cathode materials are promising candidates for a new generation of ‘green batteries’, since they have low toxicity and can be produced from renewable resources or from petroleum. This review shows that organic redox polymers can show excellent battery performance regarding cycling stability and rate capability, and attractive specific capacities are accessible. Radical polymers and redox polymers based on heteroaromatics demonstrate superior rate capabilities and cycling stabilities at fast C-rates as well as high discharge potentials of 3–4 V versus Li/Li+, while quinone- or imide-based polymers deliver high specific capacities of up to 260 mAh g−1 with stable cycling at moderate C-rates and lower discharge potentials. This review article highlights the underlying design principles showcasing selected examples of well-performing redox polymers.

Li2-3xAlxS (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1667) was prepared via the planetary ball-milling method. Diffuse reflection UV-Vis measurements revealed that the band gap and electronic structure of Li2S changed with the formation of defective Li2-3xAlxS. Compared with x = 0, the ionic conductivity for the sample with x = 0.1334 improved by ∼3 orders of magnitude. The lithium movement activation energy and pre-exponential factor A were found to be dependent on the x value. Compared with Li2S, a ∼10-fold improvement in the electronic conductivity was realized with the addition of Al2S3. Additionally, the all-solid-state Li-S battery cell performance also displayed an enhancement in both the initial capacity and stability for sample x = 0.1667 compared with x = 0. This study highlighted the importance of the intrinsic electronic conductivity of the active materials (but not the electrode) on the performance of the all-solid-state Li-S battery.
