C dots with peripheral alkyl chains have been prepared, which undergo self-organization in the solvent-free state. A nonlinear optical response with reverse saturable absorption behavior has been found in the film state, which opens the door for potential applications in laser protection.

We study the features of the nonlinear optical response of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of spherical and triangular shapes synthesized using a citrate-borohydride approach and their mixtures with methylene blue (MB+). The Z-scans at the wavelengths of 532 nm using 10 ns pulses were used to analyze the nonlinear optical absorption of MB+ solutions, Ag NPs of different morphology, particularly, the concurrence of saturable and reverse saturable absorption in the solution of triangular Ag NP and MB+. We show the significant contribution to the increasing in the normalized transmittance accomplished by photochemical degradation of the non-spherical Ag NPs (extinction maximum of 600 nm) and transformation into the spherical ones (extinction maximum of 400 nm). The nonlinear light scattering is also analyzed, which showed the contribution to the variation of the sample transmission when it approaches the focal plane. It is shown that the nonlinear optical response is not additive in the mixture of Ag NPs and MB+. The increasing of the nonlinear absorption is probably due to both a change in the population of the triplet states of the dye and the efficiency of photochemical degradation of NPs in the presence of MB+.

The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of lanthanide bisphthalocyanine (Lu(TBPc)Pc), including first hyperpolarizability, second hyperpolarizability and reverse saturable absorption (RSA), have been investigated. Furthermore, Lu(TBPc)Pc has also been applied for optical switch based on its RSA performance.

The nonlinear optical properties, absorbance and fluorescence spectra of Erythrosin B (ErB) aqueous solution in different CTAB concentration was studied. Z-scan technique under laser light excitation at 532 nm, was used for study reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of ErB. it was observed that the RSA of solution depend on CTAB concentration. A enhancing of absorbance and quenching of fluorescence is observed with increase of CTAB concentration in solution and the RSA can reduce the fluorescence intensity. It was proposed that the micelle can reduce the dye aggregation is solutions and it can affect on linear and nonlinear optical properties of ErB.

AbstractSystematic studies of the nonlinear optical properties of metallo-organic materials have led to the development of promising new phthalocyanine materials for optical limiting. Several heavy metal substituted phthalocyanines exhibit a strong nonlinear absorption that is useful for optical limiters in the visible. In fast optical systems, other mechanisms, such as the thermal refraction, contribute to the limiting. The spectral window for limiting can by modified by altering the molecular structure.

Optical nonlinearity involved switching draws an important consideration in nonlinear optical studies. Based on that, we explored nonlinear absorption processes in silver nanoparticles synthesized by liquid phase laser ablation technique employing a second harmonic wavelength (532 nm) of Q switched Nd:YAG laser pulses with 7 ns pulse width and 10 Hz repetition rates. The typical surface plasmon resonance induced absorption (~418 nm) confirmed the formation of Ag NPs. The Z-scan technique was used to study the nonlinear optical processes, employing the same laser system used for ablation. Our study reveals that there is an occurrence of a saturable to reverse saturable absorption switching activity in the Ag nanoparticles, which is strongly on-axis input intensity dependent as well. The closed aperture Z-scan analysis revealed the self-defocusing nature of the sample.

AbstractNonlinear optical properties of asymmetric pentaazadentate expanded porphyrin metal complexes are investigated. The transmittance dependence of the target compounds on the incident laser intensity generates different nonlinear optical effects in the excited states. The reverse saturable absorption at 532 nm in the ns pulses and the saturable absorption for the pspulses at high fluences are observed in solutions. The nonlinear refractive indices n2 aremeasured by the Z-scan technique. The optical limiting based on the RSA and transverse refraction are demonstrated for ns and continuous laser. An optical limiter based on the RSA and self-refraction is performed, in which the limitating threshold and amplitude of output energy are reduced.
