We report on the relationship between growth, partitioning of shoot biomass and hydraulic development of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. grown in glasshouses for six months. Close coordination of stem vascular capacity and shoot architecture is vital for survival of eucalypts, especially as developing trees are increasingly subjected to spasmodic droughts and rising atmospheric CO2 levels. Trees were exposed to constant soil moisture deficits in 45 L pots (30–50% below field capacity), while atmospheric CO2 was raised to 700 μL CO2 L–1 in matched glasshouses using a hierarchical, multi-factorial design. Enrichment with CO2 stimulated shoot growth rates for 12–15 weeks in well-watered trees but after six months of CO2 enrichment, shoot biomasses were not significantly heavier (30% stimulation) in ambient conditions. By contrast, constant drought arrested shoot growth after 20 weeks under ambient conditions, whereas elevated CO2 sustained growth in drought and ultimately doubled the shoot biomass relative to ambient conditions. These growth responses were achieved through an enhancement of lateral branching up to 8-fold due to CO2 enrichment. In spite of larger transpiring canopies, CO2 enrichment also improved the daytime water status of leaves of droughted trees. Stem xylem development was highly regulated, with vessels per unit area and cross sectional area of xylem vessels in stems correlated inversely across all treatments. Furthermore, vessel numbers related to the numbers of leaves on lateral branches, broadly supporting predictions arising from Pipe Model Theory that the area of conducting tissue should correlate with leaf area. Diminished water use of trees in drought coincided with a population of narrower xylem vessels, constraining hydraulic capacity of stems. Commensurate with the positive effects of elevated CO2 on growth, development and leaf water relations of droughted trees, the capacity for long-distance water transport also increased.

This study highlights the effect of the Cretaceous greenhouse climate on weathering processes. Atmospheric CO2 level was relatively higher in the Cretaceous than it was in both the Jurassic and the Cenozoic. Consequently, temperature and humidity were higher in the Cretaceous than in the Jurassic and the Cenozoic. The interaction among the high levels of atmospheric CO2, extreme global warmth, and humidity in the Cretaceous resulted in widespread deep weathering. Cretaceous palaeo-weathering profiles are observed to occur at higher palaeolatitudes relative to the Jurassic and Cenozoic palaeo-weathering profiles. This implies the upward warming of the Cretaceous palaeolatitude, consistent with palaeotemperature estimates for the Cretaceous. The present thickness of weathering profiles in some selected tropical zones is approximately 200 m. During the greenhouse climatic condition in the Cretaceous, the thickness of weathering profiles at those areas could have been up to 4–5 times the present value. This suggests that many sediments were produced from the Cretaceous weathering events.

: The article is aimed at the study of Ukrainian quasi-historical novels of the early 21st century, characterized by the renunciation of “objectivity” of the narrative and emphasized the role of imagination. These are the pieces by Bakalets and Yarish (“From the Seventh Bottom”), Vynnychuk (“The Pharmacist”, “Lutetia”), and by Yatsenko (“Nechui. Nemov. Nebach”). The study reveals the features and functions of fantastic characters in the abovementioned novels. These fictional images of modern Ukrainian quasihistorical literary discourse are characterized by infernality, grotesque anthropomorphism, destruction of traditional antinomy “otherworldly– earthly/human”, philosophical and ironic coloring. Interpreting the fantasy in quasi-historical novels is expedient in the context of the global problem of perception of historical past by people of the 21st Century, with an emphasis on significant changes in public consciousness motivating writers to “Re-write/Reimagine the past”. The spread of this phenomenon reveals public distrust of the authorities, offering “correct” answers to the questions about past events, protest against permanent manipulation of historical facts (the tendency of growing consciousness and intellectualization of society).

The article analyzes the most recent challenge of the 21st century. – a steady increase in the number of displaced persons. The author first analyzed the “modification” of the causes of their appearance during the XX – XXI centuries from the classic – two world wars to the new – environmental and man-made disasters. It is proved that this problem belongs to the global problems of mankind, and therefore requires a search for the highest-level solution to the UN resolutions. Because it is impossible to overcome at least today, the community has embarked on a path of control and regulation, for which the Global Compact on Safe, Organized and Regulated Migration and the Global Refugee Treaty were adopted in 2018 at the UN level. The author concludes that the Global Compact on Safe, Organized and Regulated Migration and the Global Refugee Treaty are, in fact, the first step in the efforts of at least the first attempts to resolve the case, but their declarative nature casts doubt on the possibility of solving this global problem. The problem of internally displaced persons in Ukraine, the emergence of which was the result of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine and the inability at present to join our state to implement the provisions of the above documents, was stressed separately.
